Aisté - "Strazdas"
Five years after their ill-fated debut, Lithuania returned and got to face their demons as the first act on stage - a task well bestowed to the solitary, capable hands of vivacious songbird Aisté (from the band Skylé). The song also speaks of a songbird and is sung in Samogitian, a phonetic minority-dialect in Lithuania. "Strazdas" is magnificent, a great way to open the show, musical and enrapturing, and still my favorite Lithuanian entry.

Ethnic and beautiful. Hugely underrated in my opinion.
I remember watching this live on tv. I never forgot about this song and kept on looking for it. Today is the day that i found it and listen to it again

This song is something that could've easily come out from a Disney movie such as Pocahontas,enchanting.
This was of course one of the best ones that night, my top favourite with Austria. Major injustice.

I remember the greek commentator having said after this song was performed: "we will watch a great show tonight, don't judge by this, it is too ..lithuanian", so superficial and silly comment.
I agree. It's a beautiful song. Very underrated. One of my favourites that year. My favoutite Lithuanian song.

The main problem with the performance was the staging. They could have given her an appropriate dress and not look like she just came back from getting groceries. Also, the stage was too bright. They could have darkened it a bit similar to Slovenia's and used the background like Bosnia & Herzegovina with green. The Lithuanian delegation & IBA did a disservice to Aiste. She deserved a lot more.
Exactly. I imagine her wearing a traditional dress from that region of Lithuania or something inspired by that and the technical possibilities of late 2000s early 2010s that were unavailable in 1999.

But this song is amazing, the way she spells words it’s so old, we do not talk normally nowadays that way. It’s beautiful.

The debut of Lithuania was obviously tragic. They didn't return in 1995 of course because of the results they got in 1994, but they didn't return in 96, 97, 98 either. Then, in 99, they sent this masterpiece... Yet they scored so low and missed 2000 again:(
Strazdas is still one of my favourite Lithuanian entries. The paganistic elements and singing style really catches me. It sounds like something that Iceland or Ireland would sent. However, the background was rather dull and maybe it was a reason why this song finished so low. With some effects (like snow, pyrotechnics) and with a better running order, this might have finished much higher. And indeed, this amazing song is in my top 5 of 1999.

Beautiful voice but the song is boring for me. The melody is kinda flat, it is as if she was singing the same five notes over and over. It tries to be cathartic but ultimately fails. Those arrangements have also aged badly.

Son mejores todos los imitadores de los Back Street Boys, Cristina Aguilera y similares que salieron en esa edición de 1999, esos eran muy divertidos (estoy siendo irónico). Los ignorantes son los que siguen las modas musicales, la música es arte, y el tiempo pone al arte y a las moda en su lugar....y no tengas dudas de que temas como éste dentro de 100 años serán mejor valorados que toda la morralla que quedó entre los diez primeros
