In Metal Gear Solid 4, there's an optional Codec conversation where Colonel Campbell tells Snake about the time he attended an international "ration swap meet" where various military leaders from around the world tried other countries' military rations. He then passive-aggressively tells Rose that her cooking sucks by saying that she could learn a thing or two from the chefs who made the French rations. To top it all off, Rose chimes in that she actually enjoys US military rations 🤣

You have no idea how jealous I am of some of the European NATO members and their MREs. I had to trade multiple Chili Macs for a single French MRE, but let me tell you this, it was worth it.
In Iraq we had an MRE Cookbook. It laid out all sorts of ways to combine several different main meals and ingredients. Some turned out really good. We tried one recipe to make a chocolate cake out of several Cocoa and creamer packs with finely crushed crackers, with M&M's mixed with water into a cake type mix then put into an Ammo can and either put on a HMMWV or vehicle engine. Or in our case just set in the sun. It did kinda turn into a cake but was barely edible. LOL Good times.

In 1997 I was in Brazzaville, Congo. And had opportunity to trade MRE's with French and Belgian guys. For some reason the Belgians absolutely loved the old school Omelette with Ham. One of the worst ones Americans could get stuck with... I traded one time for some sort of Belgian MRE that came in a can similar to a canned ham. It had a small bottle of wine and a cigarette. The fish was like large sardines or Kippers and was really good. It had some sort of bread and crackers that tasted like chocolate Graham Crackers. I had many from the French and Belgians but that one is the one I remember being really good.

What's not unrealistic is your rations are the five-star dining of military rations. I'm American and they're really solid. If you think I'm being overreactive, I'm not, I've had a few imported stateside and if they're not worthy of that praise... they're amongst the best of the best rations out there. :)
I ETS'd in 1993, so I'm not familiar with menu items that appeared after that. But my favorite first-gen MRE meals were Beef Stew and Meatballs in Spiced Sauce. I would have loved to have tried Carrot Cake, but I did experience the joy (both of eating, and of using them as bargaining items) of Chocolate Nut Cake and Maple Nut Cake.
Probably because either it doesn't provide the nutrition the others do or it'll suffer the same issue Spam did in that soldiers quickly got sick of eating it all the time.
This video reminds my personal experience with US forces. 9 years ago, I exchanged combat ration with an american specialist during Team Spirit exercise, was probably meatballs and tomato sauce. I deeply regretted almost instantly after trying. That thing had too much artificial flavor, which makes me feel it is from synthetic, not organic ingredient, for machine not human, and also too salty and less savory. It was like scrap meats in Hunt's tomato sauce. Even cheap ragu tomato sauce and frozen meatball from Costco Korea tastes far far better than that. The specialist, however, was eating my fried rice with sausage ration with pleasing face. He even got cup noodles from one of our men. That day broke my fantasy about world's strongest military forces in this planet.
One time when I'd gone several days in the field eating nothing but MREs i was backed up so badly I actually went to the medic tent and asked for a laxative. Could hardly walk They go "Nah man, youre ok. Drink apple juice. Lots of apple juice." I go, "ok, got any? Cause I cant go to the rear just for juice." "Nope. Laxatives neither."
Hey man! Love your channel. Keep up the great work! My first intro to MRE's was in 1993. My college roommate was in ROTC and used to get them all the time. We ate them when we were starving in the room with no money for pizza. They were horrible 😅😅
I had survived the Military Surplused Minestrone during Spring 1998. A church sponsored Rappelling trip. The Rappelling Instructor had a nasty sense of humor.
This makes me wonder how Gordon Ramsey would build an MRE. He's shown British airmen how to make quick meals in between patrols, so I'm sure he could make something amazing even from a retort pouch.

Back in the early 2010s I was at a catering collage in the UK. One day we had a recruiter from the MoD come in and try to convince us to sign up. He bought some MRE pouches and gave use a few each and told us to make a 3 course meal for 2 out of them . The quality of food from a British MRE is amazing for what it is and if you have any sort of cooking experience you can make some impressive meals out of a few packs . We even got to use a field kitchen that was set up in the car park

And the animation of the guy eating it is a reference to south park
Finally UCP camo appeared in a simple history video lol
As a French I am outraged that you showed the frogs legs this is so unrealistic
Its too refined for simple soldier
What's not unrealistic is your rations are the five-star dining of military rations. I'm American and they're really solid.
If you think I'm being overreactive, I'm not, I've had a few imported stateside and if they're not worthy of that praise... they're amongst the best of the best rations out there. :)
@@ThyPandora Thank you , but sadly our modern ration don't come with a bottle of Bordeau anymore . But yes ist still good food .
Really like the tuna, also anything with a firststrike bar
I ETS'd in 1993, so I'm not familiar with menu items that appeared after that. But my favorite first-gen MRE meals were Beef Stew and Meatballs in Spiced Sauce. I would have loved to have tried Carrot Cake, but I did experience the joy (both of eating, and of using them as bargaining items) of Chocolate Nut Cake and Maple Nut Cake.
I wonder why US doesn't make Chili & Mac MRE as standard flavor if everyone love it so much😂
Probably because either it doesn't provide the nutrition the others do or it'll suffer the same issue Spam did in that soldiers quickly got sick of eating it all the time.
Maybe because it's expensive to make.
"what can we do to stop the enemy from launching the missile?"
"I have a Chili Mac MRE"
"GENIUS!"
2:53 I think he knows what he is doing💀
Gordon Ramsey was a nice touch :D
@1:17 Bro that guy just straight up traded one of Saddam’s golden AK’s for a chilimac MRE wtf
saddams golden aks 😭😭
This is great 👍🏼 i got out in ‘09 and only consumed expired MREs in my service. Wish i coulda tried the buffalo chicken since I’m from western NY 😢
For the record the expired ones worked fine, although refusing to exit 😂
0:33 THE VOMLET ON THE SIDE
that’s the first time I’ve seen the face behind the voice 😱 3:03
5:05 Simple history, you've definitely watched Steve1989MREInfo's videos before.
😂😂
One time when I'd gone several days in the field eating nothing but MREs i was backed up so badly I actually went to the medic tent and asked for a laxative. Could hardly walk
They go "Nah man, youre ok.
I see you also own a jacketed M1. Same. Mine's just the Vietnam era jacket made for being able to take additional shrapnel and small caliber rounds.
This makes me wonder how Gordon Ramsey would build an MRE. He's shown British airmen how to make quick meals in between patrols, so I'm sure he could make something amazing even from a retort pouch.
The Marine eating crayons out of an MRE bag in the beginning of the video had me dying 😂. I love the fine details.
Love these so much your style of videos are great
I wonder what Simple History eats for lunch. Also I love your videos alot. Can you make a tank battle video about the M1 abrams vs a different modern mbt?
2:54 i never seen a pooping soldiers holding there hand though
Back in the early 2010s I was at a catering collage in the UK. One day we had a recruiter from the MoD come in and try to convince us to sign up. He bought some MRE pouches and gave use a few each and told us to make a 3 course meal for 2 out of them . The quality of food from a British MRE is amazing for what it is and if you have any sort of cooking experience you can make some impressive meals out of a few packs . We even got to use a field kitchen that was set up in the car park
2:53 When the MRE's so good you really hold your homie's hand in the toilet
NEVER have I ever imagined or thought that a thumbnail like this would be present in simple history in million years
