Alan was very supportive on Northwest musicians/composers and often would entertain them at his Burien home. The only topic was music, of course. At one concert that featured his piano concerto, the pianist (Greg Short) had a TIA and couldn't play. The concert went on and Alan played his own concerto. A great moment and a very lovely man.
Alan is one of the great composers of all time, and no one seems to have noticed it. Its a crime that high school music classes dont teach people like him or ALBERIC MAGNARD, JOLI BRAGA SANTOS, DELIUS, TÜÜR, TROJAHN, TERJE RYPDAL and so many other interesting modern composers
wow, quite lovely, a real treasure in modern music. His stature as a fine composer will increase as many composers retreat from ultra modernism ie serialism
Lovely performance. I have a 1950s performance (Louisville?) on CD but this one is better. I knew nothing about Hovhaness until I bought the LP of the "Mysterious Mountain" by Reiner. Stravinsky on the flip side. Then, one Sunday afternoon at the American Symphony concerts, Maestro Stokowski asked the audience to send in requests for the next season. I asked for "MM" and it was performed the next year. (Late 1960s), Hovhaness's music is very distinctive, but there is almost too much of it for his own fame.
I was present and singing during the performance and recording of this masterpiece. What a joy and privilege.
A terrific, inspiring piece. Lovely intro with great writing for horns.
Magnificent music and performance. Beautifully done!

Beautiful piece, it reminds me of the ninja turtles, the part when Shredder teaches about turtles origins.
