Tons of Tailing Red Fish

- Sight casting to tailing Red Fish in the grass flats is a lot like deer hunting. If you see one that is great, if you catch 1 fish it is a successful day. 3 times in the past years I have caught and released 8 Reds in a single day which is amazing due to the short window of opportunity and if there are multiple anglers it is common to trade off shots. This evening, 7-16-12, I had a personal best of 10 Red Fish landed on a flat that is rarely fished south of Charleston. I even had 2 or 3 that tried to eat and missed the fly along with a couple that I made bad casts on. A couple interesting notes: Fish 1 and 9 get into the backing, when I catch fish 4 you can still see the rings on the water from when I released number 3, fish number 7 turns around and comes back to a cast that was a little short, and number 10 has a total of 13 spots on him. One other shout out, thanks to my friend Jeff for the bike access to the flat. So much less of a hassle than taking a boat! And no, I won't give you his phone number!
One of the best fishing videos on the tube.
Carter, You make it look so easy.
terrific footage & narrative. thank you.
....missed this posting, but what an awesome site, not just the flyfishing action, but the landscape is gorgeous all the way to sunset!....
Juan, ay que ir a Mustang Island @ Rock Port... 😉
Enjoyed seeing your flats and you working that crab fly so effectively.
That's the coolest place I've ever seen
Beauties. Great day
great video buddy..
REALLY GREAT VIDEO NONE OF BS ON THE FISHING SHOWS.
Thomas Harrell Thanks, It is pretty amateurish videoing and editing but I have fun doing it.
Thanks, it's days like these that off set the slow ones.
That is awesome! Wish I could walk the marsh like that. Where I live, I would sink to my waist in mud.
Very cool video dude
Very nice. Just started fly fishing down here on Florida's Treasure Coast. Looking forward to being able to hook up to some nice sized reds and snook.
Awesome video!
Amazing video!!!!! I dream of fishing areas like that...also brings back memories of my childhood riding a bike to go fishing, thanks for sharing your experience with us!!!!!
Hi Carter! Very nice show. That looks to be some pretty cool fishing in the grass. It is almost like calling the fish out from behind the bushes in the front yard. :-) We don't have flooded grass flats like that here in Charlotte Harbor. Is your choice of fly under wraps, or can you share pics or info on in. I would like to give it a try here in the finger creeks off of the Harbor. NIce job! Thank you, James
Dude, that vid is sick!!! Would love to do that one day! Trade ya for a snook trip down here in Florida on fly for those grassy reds on fly.
Thanks, I wish that I had the time to get down there to take you up.
You have access to a very special location and if I could fish a place like that I'd probably start back fly rodding. It's perfect for flies. Thanks for sharing.
Would have never thought to fish in the grass like that. Great video. Thanks.
This is a fast action 6 weight, Thomas &Thomas Horizon. I like the lighter rod for short to medium range because it does not slam the fly into the water. Also the fly has mono eyes and no weight so it is fine with the 6 wt.
wind, reel, and the splashing is all the music needed.
Different than what we do in Texas, but this truly looks like a great adventure!
I feel like a god because I found a spot like this in my neighborhood and nobody else knows about it.
I love your videos.there by far my favorite fishing videos. Keep it up 👍🏿
Great video! You have an awesome fishery there! Thanks for sharing.
that is bad ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is one of the coolest redfish videos ive seen on youtube! I wish we had more reds in the grass in florida! Looks like a lot of fun!
Great job. What a beautiful and fun way to fish. Good luck and tight lines!
Actually there are a few but there are a bunch of gators around here. I had one swim between my friend and myself about 5 years ago.
I’m trying to get my first one on the fly saw one tailer yesterday probably 20+ inch fish threw it right infront of him and he didn’t see it definitely going out tonight wish me luck
did you sir just get to a redfish tailing honey hole on a bike from home? the luck some people have.. lol Nice vid man
I think you found heaven.
Where in Charleston. I need to hit it up while I am in town this week.
Way south except for when I go way north.
Carter Nelson haha great response
Wow. Redfish in NC. So wierd seeing them in places other than FL. Do you also have trout up there?
Wish I was biking distance from that spot also
Fishing in those grass flats is pretty amazing!! Great video!
i like the fact that you didn't add music. Nice video.
Thanks, I need another night like this. Haven't seen this many tails in a long time.
This is like a dream a redfisherman would wake up from and think about days afterward.
OM Gosh this gave me withdrawal shakes. Real nice fish. You sir are very fortunate. Question, what size rod are you using?
I'm using a 6 weight. Most use 8s but the 6 has some definate advantages. It is a very fast 6 though. Fished with your buddy Capt. Paul a couple weeks back.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks.
Just wish we had more of these kind of videos on you tube rather than all the other crap that floods such great ones like this'' very Awesome man keep posting
great video. now thats what you live for right there!
Great video makes me want to go out and buy a fly rod and reel today!!
What an awesome video and great strike action from the reds that day. They were cooperating well. I fly fish in Texas on the coast. Great job and very nice fish.
Thanks, I have never fished down in Texas. I hear great things about the area though.
What are some good areas to check out in Charleston? I will be living there this summer and just got a salt water fly rod to try this out.
one of my favorite fishing videos, I keep coming back to this man! I'd be weary of the damn moccasins in that water man :o
Thanks and no the fly is no secret. It is simply a Merkin with a weed guard and mono eyes instead of lead. If you are fishing in deeper water you may want to add weight but these fish are in less than 18 inches of water and sometimes even less than a foot.
Was seriously worried about gators.
Wonderful video!
Not sure, all I can say is that it is north of the Charleston area.
10:05 redfish jumping. Sick video man!
mullet i thought
awesome video man, thats too cool you can ride to where you fish!!
Thanks, about an hour north of Charleston, SC.
Awesome footage man! Enjoyed that very much.Im from Florida and Ive never fished a flat like the flood tide flats you have in SC. Looks like alotta fun. Makes it even better that you can ride your bike to the spot! I cant complain to much though...the Mosquito Lagoon is in my backyard.lol Thanks for sharing the film.
My first experince with tailing Reds was in Mosquito Lagoon, you have a great fishery there as well. I really like being able to duck into the little canals and catch baby Tarpon in between the Reds!
Thanks, check back in a week or so. I hope to have a bunch of highlights from this season put on there when I get time.
awesome fishing spot man
This vid was awesome!!
sick
Thanks, you can tell by my goofy laugh that I was pretty excited.
Utterly amazing catches!!! Gonna try saltwater fly fishing. I done a lot of freshwater ,gotta go for salt life ! Great vid!
+Larry Duran
Thanks, yo.
Is that near ravens run?
Awsome video!
looks light a pretty light rod, what weight is it?
Csn you show us some of the flies you us please?
Thomas Harrell Thomas, Just about anything that resembles a crab and has a weed guard should work. It is really more about the presentation and reading the fish than the patterns.
what weight set up do you use?
What type of fly are you using?
weedless crab, any flavor
The first 7 were easier targets because they were in super shallow water and you could see the fish the entire time. Then when the water got deeper it became much more difficult, like usual. Oh, and you don't see all the attempts that were edited out. I blew a few this night as well. Maybe my next video post should be called blown opportunities and that will show how tough it can be, and I can feature Frank A. in it!
I have not seen redfish fishing like this
That is crazy! Looks like you are fishing in a field! What kind of leaders do you fish? I would imagine that grass (the root systems) would be pretty rough on line
16 pound mono. The marsh grass is not too bad and there really are not roots in most cases.
Yes we have trout but they are not as big as in Florida, we rarely see double digit ones.
So sweet!
Tides run differently in SC than in the gulf coast of Florida so I really have no clue what it takes in your area to get a flood tide. We only get these tides about every 2 weeks so just watch for your highest tides and check out your flat. Once the water gets over knee deep, it is too high.
Very cool video, why didn't you keep them though? They looked slot.
Nice video Carter. Where in the tide cycle are you fishing? I know of a grass flat that looks similar near me and was wondering what tide might be best to give it a try. I have spinning gear.
Oh how I miss the water. I am so far inland now it kills me.....
Do you need a tropical fly line for the flats here? I'm wondering if a trout line I have will get too soft.
13 dislikes?!?! Must be jealousy! Great video.
How often do you catch them like that?
+fussellmuscle
You know, I wonder about stuff like that too. While it may not be the greatest footage ever, why the dislike?
It is very rare to catch this many fish on a single tide. This is only about the 3rd time that I have ever caught this many on one outing.
Carter Nelson it's PETA bro
I mean SC
I am and thanks. There is a proposed develoment on this site so probably in the next couple seasons it will all go away.
Very cool
Carter where in charleston? I live there and may want to go thanks!
Shouldn't you be watching out for alligators too there?
Where in charleston is this I live near the IOP and fish the sounds back there
Way north of you, way, way north!
Well, it is a cool access but unfortunately it is not my home. That would be awesome if it was!
Great video! Im fairly new to the area (two years) and have been researching flats fishing for the past few months. Any tips for a beginner in the Lowcountry?
Awesome, thanks! I use spinning reels with artificials, and spoons. How do you find flats like that - that are accessible by foot!? Maybe im looking in the wrong areas but all the flats in the Folly area require a boat to access.
HAHA yea Ive thought about doing this a few times but always to nervous of getting towed or something! Thanks for the gems of info!
amazing
+Kayak Pelagic Hunter
Thanks.
What kind of fly is that?
What weight Rod and reel did you use ?
Most people use an 8 weight. However, I like using a lighter rod and in this video I am using a 6 weight. I also make some adjustments to help with the lighter rod such as using in-weighted flies and super sharp hooks. The fish in the grass do not have the room to run like they do in t open water so fighting them is usually not an issue.
What kind of fly was that you used?
Its just a little crab pattern that I tie. The important thing is that is has a weed guard and it is un-weighted. Many people think that you need weight to go right to the bottom but that limits your fly to being on the edge of the fish's sight zone instead of in the middle of it.
Thanks for such quick reply. The part of the clip where you show it in the water makes it look pretty real. The movement was pretty life like. Can you post a pic of the fly?
Great video! Are you throwing an 8?
+Miles Duncan
Actually a 6 weight. I use an unweighted fly and it does not hit the water as hard as with an 8. But I also use heavy tippet and very sharp hooks.
Carter Nelson no way! I've got a 6 wt BVK and so that's comforting to hear. I'm trying to hit Charleston this spring as worried if my 6 would be too small
+Miles Duncan
Generally a 6 weight is not the recommended size rod for salt water due to wind, size of flies, etc. However, if you can cast and know how to fight a fish, a 6 weight will work. Most reds we catch on the flies are under 10 pounds and can be handled on a 6.
No snakes in there I guess ;)
Awesome video! So I am moving to Charleston in a couple of months with my fiance, she is going to MUSC and I will literally not know anyone down there. I am a die hard fly guy and looking to make a couple of buddies. Most of my knowledge base is fresh water for trout and have spent many days out on famous (and even better not so famous) rivers when I lived in Salt Lake. I have about 4 years of salt water under my belt fishing in and around Emerald Isle in NC as that is where I am from but my shots at tailing reds have been limited. Anyways if you want to make a new buddy that will buy you a beer or 3 let me know. PS I have a bass boat that I will be selling for a skiff if that sweetens the deal haha ;)
Not really.
what fly are you using?
what state is this
Charleston, South Carolina
What fly were you using?
