But I cut the lawn for the theater manager so I got tickets, junk food and no age restriction. Scared the crap out of me. But I saw it nine times more. Hence my love of horror movies. even if the animal is eaten after it is killed, the point is that it was crudely killed for the purposes of a movie. it was not hunted in the forrest by a father and son to bring back for the family to eat, it was for fun. and the animal can not consent to it like an actress consenting to a rape scene.

My tastes in horror have changed drastically and excessive gore and edginess and disturbing content for the sake of it don't do anything for me anymore. Maybe I've allowed myself to not become desensitized? I don't know. But I do know one thing; Isabelle Adjani is one of the most beautiful women in the world and is aging beautifully--65 and still Has It and how. (Before the ratings changed here in the UK) When I did get around to seeing it I must admit my reaction was MEH! I think that because by the time it came around that I could watch it I had seen films that were more shocking/disturbing. The Evil Dead is awesome I never found anything in it disturbing, just fun. Land of the Dead I enjoy, I end up rewatching it if it comes on.
Some on here I have never seen and some I would never want to. Great picks! I especially loved to see "Possession" in the list!
But I missed at least the mentioning (not recommendation) of "Salo" and a stay-away notice for the very sick "A Serbian Film" (I never watched it and never will). But the most horrifying and most realistic horror movie of all times is missing: "Martyrs" from 2008!
I not recommend to watch it for anyone, but if you do then be aware that it has 4 different levels of horrification and each level is even worse and more sick than the one before! It's the ultimate realistic nightmare and shows what people with sick ideologies are capable of. (And if you think it's all made up then I challenge you to look further into real projects like MKULTRA and Project Monarch and Adrenochrome harvesting. After finding out the truth, the movie becomes understandable, cause it's just a shadow of the real world.)

It's been my impression that here in America showing violence is okay but sexuality (less so now, but still) is limited, while in certain places in Europe sexuality is a lot more natural and freely expressed but violence is limited. They're two sides of the same coin.

Exactly fam. Exactly. I honestly don't see the point of either one doing a restriction on one and leaving the other. It's all technically "mature content", so what's the point of letting one part slide while the other is denied. People either get violence desensitized and sexually repressed or the opposite. It just doesn't seem sensible. To me anyway.
Tell me Don, are you from Europe? The States like me? Or somewhere else? I ask cause I'm curious what they do where you're at. Hopefully not one of the countries that restricts everything.

I gave been a horror film fan since the age of 6(I am 66), and the only 2 films that actually frightened me, are "The Exorcist" and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". Oh, there have been plenty of more movies that are more disturbing, but none that has a more frightening effect on me, and therefore put them at the top of my classic list for from the horror genre. The animal cruelty in the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", was part of the "Meat is Murder" theme, and was not used solely on exploitative means like many of these latter horror(?) films.

When I saw it in the late 1980's I was already a big horror fan and had seen all the goriest and scariest there was. And even I was shocked by the Exorcist. Sure a lot has come after that was equally as shocking, but it didn't get dethroned for a very long time and deserves it's spot.

@@MrBilld75 I get the point it's just it's not one that ever phased me. I grew up on horror and I heard how terrifying it is and didn't see it until I was 10 and and I'm 40 now and it took 2 watches to appreciate it. I found it boring and I'm not religious so the theme wasn't impactful. No doubt it's one of the greatest and it made an impact but this idea that it's the most terrifying is not the case for all horror fans. To some a Serbian film is the most or some other film is more terrifying. The possession concept for one doesn't work as these films portray it to be so it's hard to see how its considered the most terrifying. The mainstream aspect of what's terrifying is different from what those of us who are not affected by it would be. I'm not saying it's not worthy but for many it's the most overrated film of horror. I meant no disrespect it's just not the same for everyone is all.
