Ikaruga's soundtrack is one of THE most stunning OSTs i've ever listened to and the way it seems to specifically be talking to Radiant Silvergun fans is a wonderful nod to its predecessor. The way it conveys increasing despair through the simple act of reusing the "chorus" notes off the first level's theme in each track with less intensity gets across the increasingly dangerous odds you're fighting through and the idea that maybe this is a losing battle. And then, in that moment. When you see the final boss is the same one from RS. The chorus kicks back in, with full intensity. If you played RS, you couldn't beat it the first time because it had grown too strong. But here it was now, out in the open, having had its powers siphoned to power this empire's weapons and machinery. This was your chance to end it.
I was FLOORED to see the Origin, again as the final obstacle, to the end of Ikaruga. The re-occurring theme from the first stage, subtly implemented thought the rest of the game's stages music was a masterful use of a score, to help progress a narration in a game...a feat not routinely achievable even across other mediums. This sort of story narration though the power of music...a constantly recurring musical theme is technique called Leitmotif. More recently, another OST, equally effective in delivering an emotional payload as the story progressed was available in the title, UNDERTALE. This game got a Limited Edition physical release that included an actual locket (an item also present within the game) and it played the musical theme found throughout most of the other tracks of that game. Getting back to Trasure, the OST to Radiant was amazing, Hitoshi Sakimoto is among the most revered composers in gaming music, but Hiroshi Iuchi's score for Ikaruga is a marvel, when you take into account that he is a graphic designer by trade, yet is talented enough to have created such an emotionally charged soundtrack.
To those not in the know, Ikaruga is also on Steam. If you got a laptop like I do, play it in vertical mode and flip your laptop 90 degrees. The best way to play it.
Also be sure to have good iron, otherwise you won't be able to register your scores. My previous laptop did not meet the game's standards, but this one does.
Radiant Silvergun is my favorite game of all time. I love the music, the gameplay, and the story. I would love to find an arcade machine. Too bad it never officially came to the US
They're most definitely related. The Stone-like from Radiant Silvergun shows up at the end of Ikaruga. It even has the same final sequence of being unable to shoot. The only difference is that Ikaruga actually ends up destroying the Stone-like. So maybe it stopped the cycle of resets?
You can't really do a complete history of Cave without a history of Toaplan because they are the predecessor to Cave. When Toaplan disbanded the employees formed Cave along with Raizing and Gazelle which were later absorbed into Cave. Cave's "house style" was a continuation of what Toaplan was doing before they went out of business and their final game Batsugun was the progenitor of the bullet hell genre and the direct ancestor of basically all of Cave's lineup.
Nier Automata takes a lot of inspiration from Ikaruga, from the art direction to the music that syncs with the action. 2B looks a little like Kagari, the pilot of the 2P ship
Classic shmup action these games. I've always struggle with Radiant Silvergun but it is a sweet game. Ikaruga was one of my most played games on the Gamecube. The XBLA port is great too. Good stuff with this episode sir.
Do an episode on the Raizing 'Battle' series; Battle Garegga, Armed Police Batrider and Battle Bakraid. There's a lot of incredible creative and technical detail to these games beyond their infamously subversive scoring and design mechanics. Armed Police Batrider in particular is a carnival of Grade A visual artistry and sonic excellence which needs more exposure and people asking quite loudly why M2 or Hamster or someone else hasn't blessed this masterpiece with a home port.
I wonder if Hiroshi Iuchi watched Top Gun or Independence Day while developing Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga? Especially considering the finale of Top Gun: Maverick is literally like the final boss of both games.
It's odd how I even learned about Ikaruga's existence. I played this old Mega Man flash game called "Mega Man Polarity" and it was basically Mega Man with Ikaruga's color switching mechanic. It also used some music from Ikaruga which was one thing I really remember from that flash game. Years later, I heard the music "Ideal" (Ikaruga's first level theme) from this video talking about Ikaruga, and here I am now. The soundtrack is what sticks with me the most because of all of this.
Ikaruga was one of the first games I bought for my Xbox360 when I saw it on XBoxLive. Funnily enough I beat the first level on the Dot Eater rank and now own a broken/easter egg replay on save. (it's stage 1 but the player never spawns yet the game proceeds anyways.) Also beating the game on Xbox 360 unlocks the "prototype mode", which lets players start with 100 shots and just like the prototype you spoke about, make you absorb bullets to be able to shoot them. Thanks for another great video.
Both games are truly works of art!The soundtrack for both are EPIC(especially Ikaruga,it has the best music of ANY game imo)the graphics for R’S’gun were stunning & some of the finest for any console at the time of release,my first play of the game(Jap’import for my 50hz/60hz switchable SATURN)was mind blowing at the time, they were outstanding, both games still look amazing, especially the hd update for xbla which are the only versions I’ve got now.I sold my R’S’gun Japanese import for peanuts once I had collected all the must have SATURN import games. If only I knew how much my games like R’S’gun would end up selling for!..IF ONLY🙁
I have Ikaruga on my Switch and dang its pretty hard. Ive changed settings to easy. I like a challenge but yeh. Im a big shmup fan too and dunno it seems changing back n forth to white n black gets tough. Theres so much hype about it too and I think I must be missing something or playing it wrong. I love the CAVE series on my 360. Got the whole lot but not originals. I wanna make my bartop arcade CAVE themed but thats another story. Anyway great vid mang!!!!! Should be more shmup doco type vids!!!! PEACE!!
According to an article by Gematsu in August 2019, it's still in development. They said it will be coming out near the end of the console's life-cycle. Here's to hoping it actually does.
Absolutely love Treasure. Have both of the original copies of these games and have been collecting all of their games over the years. Have you tried Silhouette Mirage by them on the Saturn/Ps1, it was Japanese only mind you.
The game was developed on the ST-V board which the Saturn is based off...it was an easy conversion. Satrun mode from start to finish is about 2.5 hours. Arcade mode lets you pick stage 2 or stage 4 so you wont go thru the whole game
Desperate to play these games! As for the video, great job Slope! niche/obscure Sega developed or published games are what persuaded me to subscribe so was absolutely delighted to see an episode devoted to these two gems.
Was not expecting to see a complete history on this, I LOVE TREASURE everything theyve put out is instant classic in my book. Plan on doing a video in the future on them. Seriously they make some of the best and most unique games ever thank you for this -Subscriber for life
That "project RS3" (Ubusuna is the name of the game, a nod to Ikaruga's Ubusunagami Okinokai, a power discovered by that game's villain) is on the works by Hiroshi Iuchi, announced formally in 2014, the director of both RS and Ikaruga teased a game about a "50 year war", with no other info. Fast forward to 2019, Iuchi got in touch with M2 to put this project in motion. It's basically ready and playable, it just needs some touches on the graphics, according to them in a 2020 Q&A livestream. The chapter 1 song was also teased, along with some vague title screen screenshots. The only confirmed platform so far is PS4. No release date.
Why would you say it was a challenge for Treasure to get Radiant Silvergun to run smoothly on the Saturn? The arcade version runs on the Sega ST-V arcade board, which is the literally the exact same hardware as the Saturn, except a cart instead of a CD. They would have no challenge in getting it to run on the Saturn, which explains why it took only 2 months to release the Saturn version with the added videos and difficulty settings.
I was not a fan of the new graphical effects for Radiant Silvergun on the 360, but it's possible to match the original Saturn look. And I'm one of those that can get kicked hard by Treasure's difficulty, even on the easier ones 😂 For Ikaruga, portuguese speakers usually pronounce it right 😜
To be honest, Sunshine is my all time favorite Mario Game. Ugghh so good! Whereas playing Ikaruga is like entering the matrix, you have to see it for yourself, I loved it almost as much as Nitrous Oxide on PS1, which also had a phenomenal soundtrack!
After having been a proud owner and addicted to the Gamecube version since day one of its release, I finally got a close friend of mine to sell me his PAL Dreamcast some months ago after trying to convince him to do so for ages. After some time, having had to solve several issues, such as having to adjust the laser to get the system running again, buying a pound hdmi cable for a initial cheap solution on getting a decent signal transmitted to a 'modern' TV, an finally finding the right boot cd able to fake a VGA routine on most non VGA games (I finally went for Code Breaker, since it works on almost all games), I decided to get a japanese release of Ikaruga for the system. And I went for a as-new-condition offer from a former collector at 90€ on ebay. When I got this by mail, I was as happy as never before on buying a game since doing so since the mid eighties, when I initially started doing so. This game, aside all the hype and worshipping by others, and in majority ones that never even got to actually play and enjoy this beyond the first stage, is the ultimate game for those who really got to start an honest relation with it. Both versions of the game are 100% identical, gameplay wise. But finally being able to play it on original hardware is a whole new experience.
And sorry to have forgotten to mention, I am obviously talking Ikaruga, not Radiant Silvergun, which I, most sadly, never have gotten the chance to play. And, if you are new to these two games and have grown up with what is commonly known as 'bullet hell', these two seem to be of that kind, but are so far from it. The bullet hell branch in the shmup world might, most likely, not even exist without these two, but sadly, this is due to players and developers not actually understood, what the envolved in development employees at Treasure had in mind implementing the unique chain and, in case of Ikaruga, absorb based system. Here in this video, during the second half of it, we see gameplay of Ikaruga. And, in contrary of what is truly stated before it being shown, the person playing it is playing it leaving the aspect of chaining aside, since only keeping up absorbing by changing polarity is the less stressful way to try to master it. But this way of playing will not get one even close on mastering the game. A depth of gameplay of this degree has never been reached before or after this uncomparable game came into being. Not even modern, somewhat comparable, releases, such as the Souls series, gets even close.
One of my favorite shooters next to the like of Touhou, Hellsinker and way too many others I can even remember at the moment (seriously, I just love this genre.)
That "Oriental Legend 2" looks really cool, actually. There are so many obscure awesome beat-em-ups, if you just did "The Complete History of Obscure Awesome Beat-em-ups" it would be a three hour special. XD
My LORD The Score is so Epic!! Anyway, i was really interesed to try Ikaruga because i liked the Polarity mechanic also i love Shoot Em Ups. That's an awesome video. I hope i can try Radiant Silvergun and Ikarurga someday.
When I first saw this I was thinking damnit I'm never gonna find it and a GameCube... BOOM I just found out today that it was released on SWITCH! YISSSSSSSS! 14.99 🤘
Interesting that Gonzo would be brought up in this video, as they made my all-time favorite anime, Rosario+Vampire, and this video is released on the birthday of my favorite character from said anime, Mizore Shirayuki. I am a total nerd. :P
After so long, Tiago Pereira dos Santos Silva just feels like a part of the outro itself rather than a name mention. The videos would feel weird without it. That said, this game/series looks both fun and like it would melt my brain to even try playing. Though the puzzle aspect with the shoot X and not Y to combo reminds me of Super Killer Hornet, in which damage dealt and score modifiers were handled by...shooting math. As you were fighting the alien menace, numbers would fall down the screen and you would have to create and solve math problems, with the answer going toward your points. The game itself was so-so as far as shooters go, but the mechanic was pretty nifty.
I did get my hands on Ikaruga again, this time on the Switch. Not the best at the game yet, but I hope to soon. Now if only Radiant Silvergun can come out for the Switch (and PS4).
Just bought ikaruga on steam during black Friday for $5. Can get both and other great shmups decently cheap on Steam sales. Shmups skill test was $4 during sale as well.
Daniel Ibbertson oh I'm sure they will be again during the holiday sale. They actually got a lot of nice shmups on Steam, Raiden 1-3, furious angels, hurricane of vastray, bullet souls, dariusburst CS, many others. Edit: the steam releases of radiant silvergun and ikaruga are the HD remaster XBox releases that you mentioned
It's best to play Ikaruga on the Sega Dreamcast, if you have the money for it...or you burn a .ISO file to a blank CD. If you want a suggestion for a complete history episode, DO ALIEN SOLDIER!
Interesting that you started the video with footage from Touhou Eiyashou ~ Imperishable Night. It makes me wonder if a Complete History of Touhou is being considered. If you or your patrons decide to do so I recommend that it be done sooner rather than later. Touhou is a huge series to cover at 26 official games, 17 official print works, 9 story related original music CDs, and countless fan works with more being made every year.
Watching this video in 2024, and seeing the current prices on eBay for both of these games, I would have killed to have bought them at their 2017 prices 😭
Man it sucks how late everyone is in this video. I was fortunate to buy Radiant Silvergun in 1999 for less than $60. I didnt even know what it was I had a 4in1 Converter cart and I just wanted some good games. Took me almost a year to get it right and learn the pattern and find the doggy
I have a strange relationship with Ikaruga. I am not sure if I actually like the game, but I always have a great time playing it. There are a bunch of details I clearly do not like about it. Yet, I am still enjoying the game overall.
in terms of the pronunciation of "IKARUGA", the "U" in japanese names, when between syllables, tend to be mostly silent. that said, it's not incorrect to say [EE-KAH-ROO-GAH], for when you take the kana for ikaruga (いかるが), that is how it is spoken. EDIT: there is something that been bugging me, though... is it a facet of british humor to be awful at pronouncing japanese or eastern asian words and names? i find that this seems to be a constant from the various british and english content creators i watch.
As a longtime hardcore oldskool collector of shmups for the Neo Geo, Pc Engine, Genesis and 1st week owner of the Sega Saturn I'm still trying to figure out all the hype behind Radiant Silvergun because I've watched gameplay several times but still have'nt seen the game live up to the crazy hype. There's shmups in the PC Engine arena that would give Radiant Silvergun straight hell in the experience dept if we're measuring developer achievement and the calibur of shmups being squeezed from smaller 8-bit hardware, far more impressive for it's time.....and if that was'nt enough some of those titles were on credit card sized HuCards. Radiant Silvergun is a great title but also a hype job title, greatest of all time shmup??? Hellllll the fk no, maybe for the new age collector that has'nt delved deeply into several home system libraries. I appreciate the informative video though 👍👍👍
Are you aware that Kokuga exists? Also, Iuchi was working on another game in a similar vein to RS/Ikaruga at M2 called "Ubusuna" until he got overwhelmed with work and health problems.
Another great video ! While they’re good games I think part of it has to do with name dropping and being in the inner circle of unknown cool. Which isn’t a bad thing
It sucks that we're never going to get a radiant silvergun digital port to other consoles. I don't know what were they thinking to release it on the Xbox which is a dead system in Japan
I bought a 360 simply to buy & download Ikaruga. As a SATURN owner who eventually had to start buying games that were Jap’ imports meant that I used to own the amazing Radiant Silvergun & as soon as seen a review of its spiritual successor Ikaruga, I went to buy the 360 that very weekend. The fact that an HD version of Radiant Silvergun itself came to the 360 was just a cherry on top of that shmup cake. The fact that there’s about a dozen great Cave shmups available on the 360 was just eh🤔……..another cherry on top of that same🤷♂️….cake.🤦♂️lol

@@junkshun626 When you realize what you gotta do to kill it. Tears. :(
To those not in the know, Ikaruga is also on Steam. If you got a laptop like I do, play it in vertical mode and flip your laptop 90 degrees. The best way to play it.
GameCube emulator on a laptop turned 90 degrees
it's extremely annoying R:S still isnt though :s - and I dont think Xenia can do it yet either
Also be sure to have good iron, otherwise you won't be able to register your scores. My previous laptop did not meet the game's standards, but this one does.
@raytracemusic now it is
I spent so much time on Ikaruga. I FORCED myself to learn it and get better just to beat it, and it was such a good feeling.
Good video!
I love your style. I would LOVE to see a Gradius and R-type video. These 2 have contributed a huge amount to arcade gaming.
How about a complete history for the company cave?
They are the masters of modern shmups .
The kings of bullet hells.
You can't really do a complete history of Cave without a history of Toaplan because they are the predecessor to Cave. When Toaplan disbanded the employees formed Cave along with Raizing and Gazelle which were later absorbed into Cave. Please do Gradius. Thanks for this one. This was great!
+Toploaded Gaming im sure i will get to it at some point ;)

Thanks buddy
Ikaruga can be purchased for about £3 on Steam, when it's on sale. Works just fine with a wired 360 pad.
And they of course did bullet hell long before Silvergun/Ikaruga
I wonder if Hiroshi Iuchi watched Top Gun or Independence Day while developing Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga? Especially considering the finale of Top Gun: Maverick is literally like the final boss of both games.

+Jonathan Rollings ahhhhhh cheers buddy
Do you offer a volume of these on blu-ray and/or DVD? If not, you should. I'd buy one for me and one as a gift!
I don't mate, I have thought about it,but not sure if it would actually sell :P
Daniel Ibbertson it would im usually a marley 13 man but lately im addicted to your videos theres alot of work goes into all your stuff its great
ohh don't tease me with sin and punishment. I already got Capcom teasing mr with a complete mega man(yes and X ) collection on switch.
hahaha :P
Holy hell, I almost choked at 11:43. That was a smart move, but it was also hilarious.
Talking about unconventional shmups, it would be nice to see a video on the Cho-Aniki series.
Ikaruga was one of the first games I bought for my Xbox360 when I saw it on XBoxLive. Funnily enough I beat the first level on the Dot Eater rank and now own a broken/easter egg replay on save. My brother loves this game. I remember he bought it and obsessed for a week to master it.
Lol, it's funny you got obsessed too. I wrote that before you said that line.
Whatever happened the 3rd game Ubusuna that they were developing for PS4. I have been dying for more news.
Sadly, it seems that Treasure is more of a license company than they are a developer these days. So who knows when they will make another game.
Silhouette Mirage was released in the US by Working Designs.
My bad I should have specified, the Sega Saturn version. Thought that version would appeal more to Dan as he is a fellow Sega buff
I was just playing through Sin and Punishment again and then Slope makes a video on Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga...

"Luchi"? Seriously? Since when are there any Japanese names that start with L? Try Iuchi.
He likely read the capital I as a lowercase l.
I´m a big Fan to both Titles and can´t thank you enough for this Video.
And need to kow that Sin and Punishment is coming soon. Love that Franchise!!
The u in Ikaruga is very softly pronounced, the same as 'Sasuke' is pronounced without pronouncing the u. There are a lot of Japanese words like that.
I was obsessed with Ikaruga on GC. I spend thousands of hours on it but never got more then an S ranking on each stage :[
The arcade hardware Radiant Silvergun was on essentially was a saturn in architecture with carts instead of CD ROMs

totally awesome video. i havent seen many slopes game room videos but i definately will now. again, great video!

I was not a fan of the new graphical effects for Radiant Silvergun on the 360, but it's possible to match the original Saturn look.

A depth of gameplay of this degree has never been reached before or after this uncomparable game came into being.
Not even modern, somewhat comparable, releases, such as the Souls series, gets even close.
I don't have Radiant Silvergun, nor a Saturn. But I did buy the Gamecube port of Ikaruga years back when it was cheap.
Right up my shooting ally this. Enjoyable video dude
+Novabug thanks bud :) tis such a classic
So very glad my friend showed me this game. I was lucky enough to get it on Dreamcast around the time it came out.
One of my favorite shooters next to the like of Touhou, Hellsinker and way too many others I can even remember at the moment (seriously, I just love this genre.)
Awesome video - love these games, thanks for the history.
Ikaruga is coming out for the Nintendo switch! Now all we need is radiant silver gun with the cutscenes and hopefully a complete treasure collection.
Yeah, the pronunciation of Ikaruga at 10:36 is more or less correct. That is how Japanese people pronounce it.
That "Oriental Legend 2" looks really cool, actually. There are so many obscure awesome beat-em-ups, if you just did "The Complete History of Obscure Awesome Beat-em-ups" it would be a three hour special. XD
Both Treasure & Afro Samurai were mention in this video which means = awesome video!
Another great video. Keep it up!
My LORD The Score is so Epic!!
Anyway, i was really interesed to try Ikaruga because i liked the Polarity mechanic also i love Shoot Em Ups.
That's an awesome video. I hope i can try Radiant Silvergun and Ikarurga someday.
I'm proud to say that I have completed R-Type, Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga
Almost two years have passed and still no "Sin & Punishment: The Complete History" in sight.
I love the S&P music choice!
"Shmups, if you will." I will NOT, sir. I will not. (Great work, as always, DJ Slope.)
When I first saw this I was thinking damnit I'm never gonna find it and a GameCube...
BOOM I just found out today that it was released on SWITCH! YISSSSSSSS! 14.99 🤘
Physical copies now available on nicalis web site.
Interesting that Gonzo would be brought up in this video, as they made my all-time favorite anime, Rosario+Vampire, and this video is released on the birthday of my favorite character from said anime, Mizore Shirayuki. I am a total nerd. :P
Great coverage of both the games and Treasure, Daniel. \,,/
+moviemetalhead thanks mate. I can asure you it will not be the last time i cover a treasure franchise
Daniel Ibbertson of that I have no doubt my friend.
i had 2 copies of radiant silvergun a few years back for the stv
.... sold them both for a nice amount
Two of my all time fave games dope vid
IKARUGA announced for the Nintendo Switch!
Fernando Deschapell my life is complete... Ikaruga on the go... Life is good
Both of these are available on Switch now too. Ikaruga has been for years.
I did get my hands on Ikaruga again, this time on the Switch. Not the best at the game yet, but I hope to soon. Now if only Radiant Silvergun can come out for the Switch (and PS4).
My biggest exposure to Ikaruga was a flash game that was basically Megaman X with Ikaruga mechanics. Gotta say... it was interesting
5:42 the final boss is an ultraman
Just bought ikaruga on steam during black Friday for $5. Can get both and other great shmups decently cheap on Steam sales.
Shmups skill test was $4 during sale as well.
+NEZLeader ahhhhhh wish i knew it was on sale then :S
Daniel Ibbertson oh I'm sure they will be again during the holiday sale.
They actually got a lot of nice shmups on Steam, Raiden 1-3, furious angels, hurricane of vastray, bullet souls, dariusburst CS, many others.
Edit: the steam releases of radiant silvergun and ikaruga are the HD remaster XBox releases that you mentioned
I just got Radiant Silvergun yesterday for Xbox Live Arcade. It’s a lot difficult than it looks.
It's best to play Ikaruga on the Sega Dreamcast, if you have the money for it...or you burn a .ISO file to a blank CD. If you want a suggestion for a complete history episode, DO ALIEN SOLDIER!
Ikaruga is a masterpiece. 👍
Touhou: The Complete History, 3 seasons, 13 episodes each....
Prolly hafta revisit considering radiant silvergun got a switch port based on the 360 version
Shit, they're the guys behind Dynamite Headdy? I didn't even know until now!
I have a strange relationship with Ikaruga. I am not sure if I actually like the game, but I always have a great time playing it. There are a bunch of details I clearly do not like about it. Yet, I am still enjoying the game overall.
That was awesome!
+Ryan Alves thanks bud
in terms of the pronunciation of "IKARUGA", the "U" in japanese names, when between syllables, tend to be mostly silent.
that said, it's not incorrect to say [EE-KAH-ROO-GAH], for when you take the kana for ikaruga (いかるが), that is how
it is spoken.
EDIT: there is something that been bugging me, though... is it a facet of british humor to be awful at pronouncing
japanese or eastern asian words and names? i find that this seems to be a constant from the various british and
english content creators i watch.
Could it be..They are not Japanese to begin with?
I'm british, and no, its not, we just pronounce stuff wrong
In the middle of this video I watched someone talk about Clash of Clans for 2 minutes before I realised it was an advert...
EE-KAH-RU-GA
*E*
EE-KshortA-RshortUH-GA which is due to devoicing certain vowel sounds when certain kana interact. Or something.
Guy, if he never watched Don't Be A Menace To South Central (While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood) then he never lived.
Are you aware that Kokuga exists? Also, Iuchi was working on another game in a similar vein to RS/Ikaruga at M2 called "Ubusuna" until he got overwhelmed with work and health problems.
haha, Switch release makes getting Ikaruga so much easier, and it's PORTABLE as well! Good game.
You forgot to mention that thanks to Ikaruga, Kyotokei existed, its not the same but similar, its for the Wii
No mention of this same color changing idea originating is Silhouette Mirage?
Radiant Silvergun + Silhouette Mirage = Ikaruga
All three titles by Treasure, I really wish he hadn't missed that bit of trivia
Another great video ! While they’re good games I think part of it has to do with name dropping and being in the inner circle of unknown cool. Which isn’t a bad thing
Also My Bride is a Mermaid is hilariously insane and worth watching.
Two words: Mermaid yakuza
It sucks that we're never going to get a radiant silvergun digital port to other consoles. I don't know what were they thinking to release it on the Xbox which is a dead system in Japan
very odd
@@slopesgameroom , I wish Radiant Silverscreen should be ported to Nintendo Switch. That will be cool.
Super Mario Bum-Shine sounds like a good game! lol
I love the Getter Robo feel off the R:S anime
I know what you mean
