Thanks for your helpful video. The wiring diagram was excellent in understanding this simple, yet archaic series circuit. I changed the freezer light and all the other lights came back on. I didn’t remove any of the freezer drawers. I was able to get the light removed just by opening the freezer and reaching up. Thanks again for your time and effort to pull together a video and upload it to UA-cam.
Thank you for your help. I have followed your instructions and it was exactly the same light for me as per your suggestion. You just saved me a few $ for a technician. Great job.
PERFECT! Went 9 months contemplating this - saved me LOADS of money. And....they are designed to go in - not out very easily. ONLY way to get them out easily is with 2 x 2" putty knives - one in each of the long sides of the lights.
Just replaced my freezer light with success. Found one at McCombs Supply online for $42. Took about 20 minutes to pry out the original light. Yes it was a pain. Had a small issue when disconnecting the wire connector. I squeezed the small plastic lock but wire still wouldn’t unplug. Grabbed a pair of pliers and after pulling with moderate pressure, it finally released. Turns out a small piece of insulation was stuck to it. Plugged new light into the connector and all worked well. Fit pretty snugly into the existing hole but I didn’t replace the small amount of insulation that I dug out during the extraction nor did I use any putty around the new light. Hoping that won’t affect the light performance. Bonus, after replacing the freezer light, all lights in the fridge now work! Thanks for sharing this helpful video.
Thank you for this video. This was my exact problem. I just removed the freezer led and put a jumper wire across the terminals of the connector, and the lights on the top of the fridge immediately came on. I do not plan to replace the freezer led because there is enough light from the ceiling lights above to see what's in the freezer drawer. A zero cost solution! Thanks again.
Small tip from flat screwdriver works also. Series LEDS are based upon load across all drops. 1 of 5 is going to draw harder on the remaining 4 and will reduce their life.
@@lunamapel9867 you could install a resistor with equal resistance to a good LED. It’s what you often have to do when switching car turn signals to LED’s.
Thank you guys very much! I just took the frizzer light out in about 5 minutes without taking the drawer out with 2 putty knives. I jumped the connector with my screwdriver and the rest of the lights came on. New light is on order
Thank you!! Was told by repair person that it was the Mother Board! Ordered at $530.00. Came back to install & lights still did not work 😮 Put the original Mother Board back in. No charge thank goodness because he couldn’t figure it out. I later found your video & order the bulb for $58. My husband followed your video & PERFECT everything lights up!!!!
Mine just went out this morning. Ordered the part. And it was exactly as you said. We have the double pull out drawer above the freezer. The top part drawer has two tabs, one on either side. Carefully use a screwdriver move the clips out, and the drawer pops up. Then you can remove the lock tabs for the second drawer. There is a video for this. I never made it to the larger drawer, because the light popped out very easy and was not insulated as bad as your video. The part came from Amazon. Thank you for your video. Saved me a ton of $$
I have the samw fridge - I see that the freezer light is the only one that is completelt out (others in fridge have dimmed significantly). Can I ask the part # for the replacement you bought on Amazon?
Man am I glad we bought the same fridge. This is the second time you've saved me $$$. I actually had no problem getting the old light out. Had more trouble getting the new one in. Thanks for the videos!
Just went through this process, maybe this will save someone else a bit of time. Firstly, thx Bearded one for making this information available to all us DIY-ers. If you have interior side lights working and flickering interior ceiling lights read on. If you have good interior side lights remove one. Pry it out carefully, they are a pain in the but to get out. Start in the freeze as the bearded one suggests. Remove the freezer light and swap for the interior side light you removed previously. If that works, and your ceiling lights are back on you're almost done! You can leave the side light in the freezer and replace the side light when you get a new one, or remove the freezer bulb and jump the connector so the rest of the lights work. You have identified the bad bulb. If replacing the freezer bulb with the known good side bulb doesn't fix your ceiling lights, then the freezer bulb is probably good. Replace the freezer bulb and move onto the interior ceiling lights. Start on the left side ceiling. Those bulbs are singles. Try swapping the front one with the good bulb. If that works you have identified the bad bulb. I'd leave the good side light in ceiling since they are such a pain to remove. If replacing the left front bulb doesn't fix the problem, try the back bulb, same process. If it works then you have found the problem. If the freezer, and both left ceiling bulbs are good then you need to try the ceiling right. These are a bit of a pain because they are not separate bulbs they are wired together and you need to remove the ceiling panel to get to the connector. Look for Bearded video on ice maker replacement, that will show you how to get the right side top panel off. Once you get the panel off, and disconnect the 3-light assembly, plug in the known good side light. If that causes the lights of the left to come on then you've identified that one, or more, of the right side lights is bad. You can buy a new 3-bulb assembly or disassemble the 3 lights and debug them one at a time. After I found my bad bulb, of course it was the last one I tested, I cut the connector off, tied the wires together and plugged it into the empty side spot, now all the ceiling and most of the side lights work. When I get my replacement bulb it will be much easier to replace it on the side. I found one for $17 from applianceparts.com. The part W11462342 was the match for my Kitchenaid as per the Kitchenaid website where they wanted $60. Good luck
Thanks for or taking time to explain all this in detail. Did you lose cooling in the ceiling because ours just lost the ceiling light and bottom freezer and its getting warm and it's not cold anymore. Just wonder if you had the same issue. Thank you
I can't believe this. I popped the freezer light off in 1 minute, switched it with one of the fridge side mirrors, and ALL lights are working perfectly now! All in less then 10 minutes. Now, we'll see if the light remain on but all is good now. THANK YOU sooooo much!
Thank you so much!!! You just saved us A LOT of time and money!!! And again, thank you for the suggestion about the freezer light. Exactly our problem. Cost us $50 to replace the light, and 30 min to complete the job. All lights working now. You are God send,
I feel like a rock star! I Ordered the new light and did everything you said. It wasn't easy getting the drawer and the light OUT, but I finally did it! My friends thought I was crazy to try it by myself, but I thought, what could it hurt!? Thank you for your video!!!
BIG thank you for this awesome video! I contemplated calling someone to take a look at my refrigerator as the freezer light went out… then that top row when out within a few weeks. Instead, I ordered the replacement from that Amazonian website and took care of it myself. My freezer top drawer does NOT come out so I had to do a little contortion to get it out (and insulation ALL OVER IT) but your guidance was SPOT ON! Thanks again!!!
Excellent video. I had not noticed the freezer light being out, just the top 5 LEDs started blinking then eventually went out. Had ordered the 3 LED loop and 2 single lights for the top, but after watching your video, checked my freezer LED which was out as well. Changed it and that fixed the problem. Your video is far better than others that help with this issued. Thanks.
My exact fridge. Already had lights fixed once under warranty and they just went out again. I'd rather have the old screw in fridge lights...they never failed. Great video. You explained it so well. Now I gotta get some new lights and fix myself. Thanks for the video.
Thank you. You were a huge help for me three years ago. Well now the lights are out again. I believe I paid $94. For the light and now I’m paying $94. Again to do the work myself. If I hired appliance repair person it would cost over $200. Whirlpool would not help me out last time. I’m very disappointed. But I thank you for saving me lots of money and teaching me how to do this myself.
THANKS FOR THIS !! I have the Whirlpool French Door with middle slide out drawer version...the top LEDs started blinking and intermittent about 2 years in, so called for my Lowes Extended Warranty repair....neither he or Whirlpool had ANY idea why this was happening, so they started replacing boards on the back of the fridge...but stopped on the day he was about to replace the motherboard, he called Whirlpool again to say "Check the schematic again because I don't think the motherboard is going to fix this light problem." They agreed, so, rather than replace it, he got into the freezer and "broke" something on purpose (must have been he disconnected the freezer LED module) so they'd have to replace the fridge as a "Lemon" under warranty.... ...but then I find out they DON'T actually bring you a new fridge, they just buy you out with a check and you're on your own to replace it....and the price had gone up about $600 !! 🤬 So we've been living with the dark (but free !🙂) ceiling until now. 🙄 But fast-forward about 4 years, and all my other lights started blinking / strobing last week for about a day, and suddenly the whole refrigerator goes dark ! I thought I was going to have to tear into the walls of the box looking for a bad LED power supply board or common connection problem....😱 Until I found you. ! 🥳♥️ I am shocked Whirlpool was so stupid in this design, putting all these lights in series, with some kind of very poor quality control and defect on these light modules so EVERYBODY's lights are going dead in the same way, AND THE FACTORY AND FIELD SERVICE DON'T KNOW ABOUT IT !!?? 😳🤬
Thank you very much! This was the exact issue, the one out was the refrigerator upper left light, not the freezer. This saved us a lot of money on hiring a repair person. Thanks again.
@@RonniewbNC Hi. The new light assembly just snapped into position without any adhesive. It does not sit fully flush like the original, but it is very close. I traded out 3 of the assemblies before finding the culprit. When seating the assemblies back, I had to flip the orientation of some for them to sit more flush, I assume because of the way the wires were tucked in. Hope this helps.
This fix worked for me on a KFIV29PCMS02 Kitchen Aid. My wiring was different though. My freezers light was on the same circuit as the side lights and the ones by the water filter. Thanks for your clear instructions, they were very helpful.
Thank you! Your directions and schematic helped me a lot! My model is Kitchen Aid # KRFF507HPS00. About 3 years old. The top lights and freezer light were out. Even though a technician had come and replaced the freezer light about 2 years ago, when it was still on warranty, I choose to replace that one first - thinking it would be the culprit. I got an off-market bulb from Amazon for $20. I replaced the freezer light with it, no go. All the light were just dimply blinking. So I then took the old bulb from the freezer and replaced one of the lights up top. Your schematic helped me choose where to start. The first one I replaced up top was it! All lights including the freezer now work! Thanks also for the suggestions on how to remove the clips holding the freezer drawer in. Worked great, although I would recommend prying up on each clip with a small flathead screwdriver first before prying out. Worked for me. Thanks again!
Thanks for the schematic. My light that was out was in the fridge ceiling. It was the only light completely dark. Others on the circuit were dim, including the freezer. So I could tell the bad one. Easy to remove with your directions. Whirlpool parts online wanted $150 for replacement light ( board and housing). Bought board online $20 and set of T shape screwdrivers in multiple sizes $8. Needed the T8 size to remove and replace screws. Very pleased with results.
Where did you find the parts? I'm very chapped about paying $150 on a 2 year old fridge. Do you still have the part number by chance? Whirlpool is telling me I need to replace the light bulb... but like man, that's up to 5 light bulbs to replace
@@Sthriven just search online for the part number on the bulb/ circuit board that’s inside the light housing. Found a variety of sellers online. If you only change the inside ( not the housing) check the type of specialty screwdriver needed to separate them.
Great video. Had replaced freezer light once already. It was the middle row light with the three on ice maker side. Just cut wires from old light and make a jumper and keep for a tool later on for when trouble shooting again. Thanks for info
Thank youuuu! I feel like an empowered woman fixing my refrigerator lights! Mine was the 3rd in the series- the rear below ice maker. Thanks so much! Have a few other fridge quirks I’m going to search your videos for.
Non-Pro Tip: If one of the LED's are bad, all the others on the same circuit may still light up, but be very dim. Try replacing each dim LED with a new working LED to determine which is bad. They will all get very bright again when you find the culprit. Good Luck!
This worked perfectly... I have a KtichenAid 5 drawer model (W10772358). I was afraid of a 3 hour job because of having to empty the freezer and remove all the drawers. I emptied the top drawer only and removed it. I then loosened the freezer LED bulb on all sides, and that helped to break the foam insulation hold on it. After that I got one side out and was able to get the LED bulb out. I did notice when working to remove the old LED bulb, that it started strobing, and as expected so did the other 5 lights in the fridge compartment. I attempted to get that to "not strobe" but was unsuccessful, so I replaced the bulb and reinstalled. All working perfectly!! Many thanks! The total time was about an hour including cleaning up the freezer drawers. :)
A big shout out to Bearded Appliance!!!! This video to replace the light is absolutely awesome! My husband and I were able to replace the freezer light thus, saving us money! We ordered the part....100.00. Everything this guy says on the video is spot on! A “must” to take out the freezer drawer so you can see the light receptacle more clearly! Thank you guys so much for such an awesome instructional video! Your voice is perfect! Very patient and calming!😉😊
Thanks for posting!! Your diagnostic procedure was spot on. It was the freezer light. It came out fairly easily since there was a previous service for the same issue under warranty and it was likely the same LED. I shorted the two wires with a screw driver and the refrigerator compartment light lit up. Ordered a clone lamp on Amazon for $42. Seems Whirlpool wants $97.48 for a what is essentially a $5 lamp at best. Also the local parts store was out of Whirlpool OEM lamps at $89 so it must be a booming business. What a rip off!! We need a class actions suit against Whirlpool for using lamps that obviously were not cold tested and certified for use in the freezer and for making windfall profits off their mistake with $97.48 replacement parts and hundreds of dollar service calls for those unfortunate enough to go that route. Does the freeze light trip on when the refrigerator compartment is opened since they are all in series (and vice versa)?
Ok: so have had this French door frig. A total of 5mos: when freezer light goes out... now upset frig. Area lights have been sliding fading last few days to "nothing".. looks like a great video=my exact problems... thank you..I don't mind being handy... but seriously... if appliances are only expected to last only a few yrs.vs. older models were 20+yrs in my experience of maintaining & cleaning..I certainly hope this isn't Just the beginning of my problems... THIS video was awesome!! Thank you so very much for posting!!
Thank you for this video. I usually don't like or subscribe to videos, but for yours it's a go. My lights just went out this week. I called whirlpool and was on the line for 1 hour on hold. first the freezer light went out, then the top. Thank you for the video.
A big thank you. I had a light inside the refrigerator that caused all the lights to dim. The one that malfunctioned did not have a tiny pilot light in the middle of the LED. Still a pain to release with putty knife and then a flat head screw driver. I had no idea how much in the dark I was inside the fridge!
Thank you for this video. I took out a working side light for practice before attempting the freezer light. While trying to disconnect the wires from the freezer light, I noticed a slight glow from the bulb. I then noticed all the other top bulbs had a glow except for one. I replaced that one with the first side one I took out. Everything is working now. I am going to order one from whirlpool. This is too much work to take a chance on Amazon. Thanks again for the video.
I agree. Just moved into this home with a spectacular looking ( but piece of crap) KITCHENAID refrigerator. First problem was air in the water dispenser line that will not clear out ( still not fixed). Second problem is suddenly water/ice pooling under the left side crisper ( no internet solutions). And today the light as described has gone out. I will attempt this fix myself. Ironically I owned a freezer bottom Samsung refrigerator with an inside the door ice maker. I know Samsung has a horrible rep and I wouldn't buy another but I owned that fridge for 10 years and not one problem. Lights worked. Water worked. Kept cool. I will never EVER EVER buy a KitchenAid appliance to replace any in this house. What a piece of garbage it is. All the fancy looking finishes remind me of putting lipstick on a pig and hoping no one looks too closely at the quality.
I can confirm this also works on the Whirlpool WRX986SIHZ. Had top lights and freezer strobe for a half day, then went out completely. Ordered one replacement light ($42 on Amazon) and took a chance as suggested and started with the freezer light first. Thankfully I did not have the insulation intrusion into the light cavity and was able to just pop it right out with a small flat head screwdriver. Put the new light in and the freezer light immediately came back on. Checked the fridge section top lights and all is working perfectly again. As others have mentioned, it is an insanely frustrating design by Whirlpool (a series bulb circuit...really?!) to not know which bulb is out, but relatively easy to remedy for those that are even a slight bit handy. Thank you so much for the information and video!
Man yeah great comment! I have yet to find one that wasn't the freezer light. Adding more wires cost them an extra few cents per fridge. They like saving that when they make a thousand fridges a day.
Exactly the fix. Great video and informative. It was my freezer led. I first tried swapping a working side led with a burnt out top one. In the process I tore the connector off the side led. I ended up soldering the new replacement Led in place. But a new Led is sold with quick connectors so yo do not have to mess around with the short wired connections and possibly breaking it. **Note** afterwards I found out the good LED’s had a small dim lit light on them. The “BAD” Led was completely out. (The only one that needed changed) All good all Whirlpool should be embarrassed and ashamed for not recalling these defective LED’s. LED’s should last a minimum of 5 years.
OUTSTANDING! Thank you so much! Was the problem and replacing the freezer bulb did the trick! I used two putty knives to gently remove the light from the ceiling of the freezer compartment which seemed to work great. Start to finish probably 25 minutes.
@@RonniewbNC It's been a while Ron but all I can tell you is I hunted online and found one for around $89! Expensive but $10 cheaper than other sites! Put in the bulb type/size and you're bound to find one. Good luck!
Thank you so much!! WE DID IT! With your instructions, my 75 year old hubby and me 73 replaced the freezer light with your great instructions. We ordered the replacement light from McCombs Supply. Our Freezer has 3 drawers model WRX986S1HZ. We were able to remove the cover door then the 2nd drawer and the large bins on the bottom but we were unable to understand how to remove the top drawer. The top drawer is on metal rails and we could not see any tabs to release the drawer so we pulled it all the way out and laid on the floor on thick yoga mats. We used a 2" putty knife on the back side of the light capsule first and pressed very hard. The whole light capsule poppe l ' d out. But as you said, there was a lot of insulation and we could not see the plastic connector at first. My hubby dug it out. It was hidden to the back not visible. He has no finger nails so I had to press down on the plastic connector an d slide it out. We plugged in the new light part #W10695459CM about $40 and Voila!! This job would have cost us I believe near $400 had we hired a repair man. If you have any tips on how to remove the top drawer in this 3 compartment freezer, I would be delighted to know. So again, thanks a million$$$!!😅😊
Your video was most helpful, it appears that we have the same refrigerator. The freezer light went out about a week ago, and the refrigerator lights went out this evening. Just as your video indicated. I will let you know how the replacement goes. Thanks again!
Great Info in this video. First light I replaced was the freezer light. Everything else came on. I got lucky, it took only 5 minutes to replace, did not even have to pull out the drawer. No insulation issues, popped right out. Thanks, you saved me hundreds of dollars.
Thanks for the great vid. This is the 2nd time I've referenced it. Couple of years ago my freezer light blew out. When I checked on the part(s) available the 3 light part# was just a bit more $$ then the single freezer so I bought the 3 light and used one of the 3 for the freezer. This morning the 6 water filter, ice maker, freezer circuit had one completely out (water filter) and the other 5 were dim. I replaced the one that was dead and I'm good to go.
Yes, we are having the same problem. Are unit is 3 months out of warranty. Had I known it was made by Whirlpool I would never have bought the thing. Very helpful video I will be starting with the freezer light to see if the upper 5 lights come on.
Huge thank you. It was the freezer light. My 2018 Whirlpool had plastic around the light so it was fairly easy to take out using a 2” putty knife. I purchased the new led light on Amazon for $79. Your video was huge and saved me $300 that the appliance serviceman said was the cost of a new”Aurora” control board, that would not have fixed the problem. Thanks
This was awesome! The lights are back on in my Jenn Air. All the lights in the fridge had a very dim light on the LED except one. I ordered a cheap replacement from Amazon, but in the mean time I cut the wires from the bad light and crossed them to act as a jumper.
Great video. Used it in lieu of the manufacturer providing repair data. Same issue here. My fridge had plastic bagging above light to keep insulation out so it came right out. Before disconnecting I measured 12V across terminals indicating good voltage in, but light not on. Removed light, and ordered same. It is an absolute scam that Whirlpool provides no schematics or technical data for their junk. The plastic bag over the light also indicates they initiated an engineering change because of your experience, and most likely a bunch of complaints. They put plastic over the light instead of fixing the technical problem with the light. Again, junk.... Problem is, they (Whirlpool) are "best in class" junk out of the pack of junk for sale in the appliance world.
I DID IT! it was the freezer light and ALL of them came back. And I have a "trick" for digging out the freezer light - didnt have to remove the drawer - used a mirror in the drawer, UTENEW 5pcs Professional Opening Pry Repair Tools Flathead Metal Pry Bars Crowbar, and this once i got it started: Metal Magery Sheet Metal Skin Wedge Pry Bar Tool Door Panel and Trim Removal Tool (One Pack). Funny part - put in new freezer light after digging out the insulation, the freezer light still didnt work but .... Opened the fridge door and EVERY fridge light was on when i only had 2 lights there before!!!. So place a mirror in the drawer and pry that freezer light out with gusto! WAHOOOOOOO!!! Hope this helps!!!
Thank you for this video and instructions. The freezer light was the one that needed replaced. Because of your instructions, I was able to correct the problem and not touch the top lights.
Today the light came for the freezer as you said 9 out of 10 times! Thanks for the part number! The tab for the freezed door was for me I pryed to left and also up and the tab came out and I dind't have to pry the other side loose just angled it out. The Light I used a putty knif and it came out nicly and not installation issue but the plug in is tight so made sure I had the plug hels with a pair of nedle nose plyers so it would not move and sliped in new led and lights wen on! I also remove the two sliding trays i like to wide open space I car install them if I want to but they a hade to get out! A BIG THANK YOU FOR THE HOW TO! MAYBE TOOK ME 30 MINUTES FROM TIME I GOT THREE TOOLS AND EVERYTHING PUT AWAY!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you! My exact issue and your video helped me with what to order and how to fix it. Just tackled this project today and now all my lights are working again. It was that freezer light as you mentioned. Thank you!
Thank you for this video. I was trying to figure out why the upper lights were all dim and it wouldn't have occurred to me that the freezer one would be on the same circuit when the side ones were clearly a different circuit. Sure enough, my freezer one was out.
Thanks ! Same problem worked with replacing the freezer light. I also question the point of LED if it's supposed to last forever ..I mean the light is only on for maybe a couple minutes a day .....🤦🏽♂️ . Ordered part from Amazon , just look up the part number off the old light.
This was tons of help, thank you very much!!!!! It was my freezer light that was bad. I took one of my side lights and put it where the freezer light was and it came on as well as my top lights!!! Just a FYI to everyone. My top lights would flicker sometimes even with the freezer light out. But now everything is working perfectly. I almost purchased the led control board thinking that was the issue. Thank you for this video!!!!
Glad this was helpful! When I firs saw this problem I thought the same thing. Ordered the Light control and same problem. Found out later that is was wired in series and the freezer light was more often than not the culprit lol.
Thanks. I replaced the freezer light like you suggested and the rest of them came on. I didn’t have an insulation problem but the tape that covered the light to prevent the insulation problem created a problem of it’s own being very sticky.
Same exact issue, new bulb assembly was around $20. A little wary of popping those drawer stoppers, but came out unbroken. Took about 5 mins or less to pull old one out, reinstall new one and finished. Didn’t have the insulation problems you had thankfully.
Yeah I warn my customers every time. I tell them it may sound like I'm breaking thing but this is the easiest way that I have found to get those dang things off haha. Yeah its an easy job if there is no insulation. Glad it was easy for you my man!
Thanks for the video, all my lights were out except the 2 by the ice maker. I switched the freezer light out and they all came on, only problem is the are flickering and dim. The only 2 that are normal are the 2 that were already lit by the icemaker. Any suggestions or do I buy another module and start swapping the ones that are flickering?
So, replaced freezer light 2x thinking maybe first one was bad. No luck. However, the freezer light is lit but very dim when I do put the new light in. So, should I pry out each of the other tops lights and swap them out to maybe identify a top light culprit?
So my freezer light stopped working about a month ago and then yesterday the top lights in the fridge started to flicker, and finally stopped working. What are your thoughts on that? Start with the freezer? Thanks!
Hi. I have the 5-door/drawer Kitchenaide KRMF706EBS01. What a crappy appliance. I would be fired if i produced a product as bad as this thing is. My lights went out in freezer and also inside. This video is pretty good and confirmed that the lights are on 2 circuits and in series, which was helpful. On another site, it was advised to replace the Driver PCB on back of fridge, but it did nothing other than eat $225. So, i dug into it more. I noticed that the lights were just 'dim' except for one on the top rack and the one in the freezer. Those 2 were totally burned out. I pulled them out, and made a 'connector' to close the circuit and the lights in the circuit came back on. Also, what a massive pain to get the lights out of the fridge body. AS said in the video, they obviously put the light fixtures in and then foam the insulation all around it. Kind of a mess, but i was able to deal with it. I tested the totally burned out lights and for sure they are burned out. I put 3.2 volts DC to them and had no light. So, rather than drop another $45 x 2 into this POS appliance i found some LEDs (Cree) on 'star boards' and just replaced the LEDs for about $2.00 each. Had to do some soldering and some 'manipulating', but that was easy enough and only took 1/2 hour...Anyway, at least i have lights in the fridge now. If anyone needs a driver PCB, i have an extra one for sale.....I'd even let it go half price.
Thank you so very much! I am in the process now and it was super helpful to see this video. I fixed the side lights but I know its going to be the freezer that is causing the top lights to be out as well!
Question could that freezer light going or gone bad have caused ice maker down there to not receive proper 120 to produce ice ? Since it's on the same circuit?
Bearded Appliance Repair well just got back to it, Pulled a couple of small flat head screw drivers out, pried under each side of the light and once my fingers could get it just pulled the thing out. I have small hands so I just took food out of the center part of the top drawer to get to it. I also just left the fridge on (yeah I know the 14 volts could shock me). While trying to get the connector out from the insulation the light came back on. Checked the lights up top and they were back on! Popped it back in making sure the wire were still in tension a bit. Works great! I kid you not, no more than 5 minutes thanks to your tips. My wife will think I worked all morning on it! Thanks again
This all makes sense to me. It matches my situation except for one thing. My freezer light is working but all my ceiling lights are out. One of the side lights is also out. Any ideas? Based on the information in the video (very good work by the way), if all my ceiling lights are out, my freezer light should not be working. What am I missing?
Thanks for your helpful video. The wiring diagram was excellent in understanding this simple, yet archaic series circuit. I changed the freezer light and all the other lights came back on. I didn’t remove any of the freezer drawers. I was able to get the light removed just by opening the freezer and reaching up. Thanks again for your time and effort to pull together a video and upload it to UA-cam.
I was also able to change the freezer light without removing the drawer. Using a putty knife. And screwdriver to pop the assembly out.
Where did you buy your new lights?
@@shawnfrederickson5775 One of the most reliable places for a consumer to buy OEM appliance parts is online at Sears.
Thank you for sharing. I am going to try myself. I don't think Whirlpool even sells the lights.
Thank you Ronnie. You have given me hope.
RonnieWB, Would you pretty please share the McCombs part #? 🙏
This comment about using a jumper helped me confirm the issue with the freezer light. Thank you!
Small tip from flat screwdriver works also. Series LEDS are based upon load across all drops. 1 of 5 is going to draw harder on the remaining 4 and will reduce their life.
Thanks for the jumper wire tip. Cause I’m not spending $50-$100 on a lightbulb
@@lunamapel9867 you could install a resistor with equal resistance to a good LED. It’s what you often have to do when switching car turn signals to LED’s.
Thanks! Fixed my Whirlpool fridge. Freezer light was the culprit and was easy to replace.
Thank you guys very much!
I just took the frizzer light out in about 5 minutes without taking the drawer out with 2 putty knives. I jumped the connector with my screwdriver and the rest of the lights came on. New light is on order
You just saved me allot of heartache and money. Thank you
Good luck
♥️♥️🥳 Thanks for this GREAT detail, MUCH appreciated !
You're a sexy beast.
Fantastic!
Thank you so much!!! You just saved us A LOT of time and money!!! And again, thank you for the suggestion about the freezer light. Exactly our problem. Cost us $50 to replace the light, and 30 min to complete the job. All lights working now. You are God send,
Where did you find lights for $50?
I feel like a rock star! I Ordered the new light and did everything you said. It wasn't easy getting the drawer and the light OUT, but I finally did it! My friends thought I was crazy to try it by myself, but I thought, what could it hurt!? Thank you for your video!!!
There is almost no better feeling lol Great job!
Glad it worked out! How did you get the new light to stay in place after installing it? Glue? Putty or silicone?
Where did you buy your new lights?
BIG thank you for this awesome video! I contemplated calling someone to take a look at my refrigerator as the freezer light went out… then that top row when out within a few weeks. Instead, I ordered the replacement from that Amazonian website and took care of it myself. My freezer top drawer does NOT come out so I had to do a little contortion to get it out (and insulation ALL OVER IT) but your guidance was SPOT ON! Thanks again!!!
Great. What light did you replace it with? Can you provide make and model or link to where you bought it?
No doubt. Technology sometimes creates more problems than it solves.
Searched forever and this was exactly what I needed. Manual gives no assistance, basically says call a tech guy. Thank you
Lights are $15 on ebay
So we've been living with the dark (but free !🙂) ceiling until now. 🙄
But fast-forward about 4 years, and all my other lights started blinking / strobing last week for about a day, and suddenly the whole refrigerator goes dark ! I thought I was going to have to tear into the walls of the box looking for a bad LED power supply board or common connection problem....😱
Until I found you. ! 🥳♥️
I am shocked Whirlpool was so stupid in this design, putting all these lights in series, with some kind of very poor quality control and defect on these light modules so EVERYBODY's lights are going dead in the same way, AND THE FACTORY AND FIELD SERVICE DON'T KNOW ABOUT IT !!?? 😳🤬
This repair went really smooth. A tip, make sure you put the drawer back in facing the right direction.
Thank you very much! This was the exact issue, the one out was the refrigerator upper left light, not the freezer. This saved us a lot of money on hiring a repair person. Thanks again.
Hello. How did you get the new assembly to stay in place after installing it? Glue? Putty or silicone?
@@RonniewbNC Hi. The new light assembly just snapped into position without any adhesive. It does not sit fully flush like the original, but it is very close.
I traded out 3 of the assemblies before finding the culprit. When seating the assemblies back, I had to flip the orientation of some for them to sit more flush, I assume because of the way the wires were tucked in. Hope this helps.
This fix worked for me on a KFIV29PCMS02 Kitchen Aid. My wiring was different though. My freezers
light was on the same circuit as the side lights and the ones by the water filter. Thanks for your clear instructions, they were very helpful.
I had the Same on my kitchenaid. Changed freezer lights and side lights worked again
Good Luck!
This is greatly appreciated! We have been scratching our heads for weeks over this problem.
Thank you very much!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much. Worked like a charm. Freezer light out. Used side light. Works now. Found replacement light on ebay for 25$.
Hi Jeff, do you remember the seller? Tks in advance....
Great. What light did you replace it with? Can you provide make and model or link to where you bought it?
Thank you. It's fixed, with your help. It was the freezer light!
I believe it does. Never actually tested it. Put your phone with the camera on in the freezer and open the top and see if it does. I would think so.
No doubt. My whirlpool fridge is only 2 yrs old and lights have already failed. I’ll take a screw-in bulb anytime over this thing.
I agree I've replaced mine 4 times... they keep going out.. pure garbage
Awesome! Thank you!
Same fridge, same problem and you fixed it! Thanks so much, really glad I stumbled on this.
Great to hear!
A big thank you! It was the freezer light just as you said "9 times out 10"
Had the exact same problem. It was the freezer light. You saved me time and more importantly a lot of curse words. Thanks!!
Hope it was easier to install than this one lol. Glad it was helpful!
I thought the whole idea behind LED lights was they lasted like 20 years.
Nothing will last 20 years any longer
China LEDs 5 years maybe😮
Planned obsolescence grasshopper
Exactly 🤦🏾♂️
Have the same issue with my Whirlpool wrf767sdhz00. What light did you replace it with? Can you provide make and model or link to where you bought it?
Exactly the fix. Great video and informative. It was my freezer led.
I first tried swapping a working side led with a burnt out top one. In the process I tore the connector off the side led. I ended up soldering the new replacement Led in place. But a new Led is sold with quick connectors so yo do not have to mess around with the short wired connections and possibly breaking it.
**Note** afterwards I found out the good LED’s had a small dim lit light on them. The “BAD” Led was completely out. (The only one that needed changed)
All good all Whirlpool should be embarrassed and ashamed for not recalling these defective LED’s. LED’s should last a minimum of 5 years.
Great video and explanation I just replaced freezer light everything works. Wife is happy now. I just saved $200. Doing it myself. Thank you!!
OUTSTANDING! Thank you so much! Was the problem and replacing the freezer bulb did the trick! I used two putty knives to gently remove the light from the ceiling of the freezer compartment which seemed to work great. Start to finish probably 25 minutes.
Fantastic!
Where did you order replacement light from?
Never checked the freezer light, super easy fix. Thank you💪
Your video was most helpful, it appears that we have the same refrigerator. The freezer light went out about a week ago, and the refrigerator lights went out this evening. Just as your video indicated. I will let you know how the replacement goes. Thanks again!
Great video! Thanks so much.
Only thing I would add is that when I pried the freezer drawer stop up and then out, it came out fairly easily.
Thank you so much for this information. You saved me money having to pay a repair man.
Thank you... Didn't even know I had a freezer light out. Replaced it and that solved my problem. Thanks again...
Thank you so much! It went well. I was middle of nowhere before seeing this video.
Great Info in this video. First light I replaced was the freezer light. Everything else came on. I got lucky, it took only 5 minutes to replace, did not even have to pull out the drawer. No insulation issues, popped right out. Thanks, you saved me hundreds of dollars.
Where did you get your LED replacement and for how much?
Thx for the video ,and you were right that it was the freezer light, it’s always good when you can save money.
Sure enough, that fixed it for me, it was the freezer light module that was bad. Great video! Thanks!
Thank you! Saved me a lot of work. It was the freezer light as you suggested.
Yes, we are having the same problem. Are unit is 3 months out of warranty. Had I known it was made by Whirlpool I would never have bought the thing.
Very helpful video I will be starting with the freezer light to see if the upper 5 lights come on.
Thanks you explained better than any other so called tech repair.
Thanks
Great. What light did you replace it with? Can you provide make and model or link to where you bought it?
Great job on the detailed instructions. As soon as I seen the series wiring scheme my light turned on. Thanks.
Perfect! The one above the ice maker was our issue, this solved it!
This was awesome! The lights are back on in my Jenn Air. All the lights in the fridge had a very dim light on the LED except one. I ordered a cheap replacement from Amazon, but in the mean time I cut the wires from the bad light and crossed them to act as a jumper.
Whats the name of the replacement that you bought I also need one for my fridge.
This video saved me hours of time appreciate it!
I have the same issue and ordered the LED on Amazon Whirlpool W11130208 Refrigerator LED Light Assembly thank you 🙏🏾 for this video
I DID IT! it was the freezer light and ALL of them came back. Hope this helps!!!
your vid is exactly what I was looking for .. straight to the point , descriptive and very well narrated.. thanks sir 👍👍
My exact fridg…. my exact prob... Thank You!
same here/thanks bro!
My exact fridge and problem too!
Thank you! My exact issue and your video helped me with what to order and how to fix it. Just tackled this project today and now all my lights are working again. It was that freezer light as you mentioned. Thank you!
Thanks...just a note all of the lights were glowing dim but as soon as I swapped out the freezer light all started to work again.
This was me too, glowing but not completely out. Swapped like you said and it works now
exactly what I needed to see. It was the freezer light. THANKS u also were correct it was a pain to change
Perfect! Haven’t tried to fix yet but it makes perfect sense. Thank you
Thanks for the video. I used an automotive trim tool and the light came out easily.
Thank you! Instructions were great. Lights back on.
Great to hear!
Thank you for this video. I was trying to figure out why the upper lights were all dim and it wouldn't have occurred to me that the freezer one would be on the same circuit when the side ones were clearly a different circuit. Sure enough, my freezer one was out.
Thank you ! , mine was also impacted by insulation, but this did fix the issue
@@BeardedApplianceRepair where do I find the part? Any part number on it?
Awesome video. Thanks for taking the time to put this out here in such detail.
Great Video but what happens after I replace the freezer light and the lights and icemaker still dont work?
Any help appreciated
Thanks, this is exactly what I have to do. Perfect video.
Do I need to change all light if its not working or one change will works all , the top level all lights but side lights are okay
Thanks!
Very helpful, saved me a lot of time on a repair
Silly question? Do you have pull out the fridge and turn power off first?
Thanks for this video it was a great help fixing my lights, after changing out the freezer light all started working.
My upper lights are DIM and my freezer light is not working. Do you think it is the Freezer light?
Thank you so very much! I am in the process now and it was super helpful to see this video. I fixed the side lights but I know its going to be the freezer that is causing the top lights to be out as well!
Question could that freezer light going or gone bad have caused ice maker down there to not receive proper 120 to produce ice ? Since it's on the same circuit?
Thanks, I was about to go straight to the led controller board, hopefully you have saved me a couple hundred dollars!
Let us know how it goes!
