I think what Larry doesnt realize is that i think Garp didn't really understand how he was to go about that change besides teaching the next generation to be better than him. I think him seeing his son, his grandson, and Aoikiji all either leave the marine or not join in, made him realize he needed to create meaningful change. I think Ace's death made him realize it was too late for him to do it. Garp knows more than anyone that he failed in changing the marines they way he wanted to. He hoped his friend Sengoku could help him do it, but he eventually fell in line too. He hoped Aoikiji or his son Dragon could do it, be they left after seeing all the corruption. That's why he places his bets on Koby, because Koby actually stood up to Akainu even when he was out matched. He stood up to Ax Hand morgan as a kid. He shown his enitire life, after meeting Luffy funnily enough, that he's has a the will to change the marines before they destroy themselves following the WG. He's sees the hope that can change the marines that he never truly had till now. Ace death was the ironically the spark he needed to realize that. That's why he was more than willing to throw his life away for Koby. Cause Koby could succeed where he failed. And I think that and the fact that his son and grandson did pick up the mantle of true change in his stead is some redemption for not doing more when he was younger.
I like the idea Garp should've been the one instead of shanks to stop akainu from killing koby and from that start the revolt against the marines/world gvt. Ace needed to die for luffy to grow up and realize pirating isn't just for fun so not mad at garp for not intervening before aces death, but seeing ace get murked by a marine should've triggered garp enough to create a change for sure especially knowing garp is a conq now and he's only getting older so what does he have to lose but actually doing the right thing which is to help make the marines follow his same sense of justice instead of following the likes of the goresi
You cannot use the "Ace needed to die for Luffy" argument to justify Garp. It doesn't erase the fact that Garp didn't intervene. And if not Shanks, Akainu would kill Koby too, funnily enough.

The only reason the fight stopped when shanks had shown up was because the WG had already lost enough people and were not prepped to fight 2 yonko crews. Garp has pull but would not have had enough back up to rectify a stop. Coby wasn't strong enough to do ish.
I guess a needless factor is the fact that Segoku had to hold Garp down before he could kill Akainu Thats practically the only reason Marine Ford isn't underwater during that fight.
As a soldier Larry right on point with some of these talking points and a lot of the times, lower enlisted and lower officers have had to make these decisions themselves in order to prevent more needless deaths. In the last 100 years there have been many times where the decision of one good man prevented all out war. From nuclear holocaust to remarking ground wars around civilians, no one talks about how many lives were saved off the idea that you don’t have to follow unlawful orders.
It’ll be interesting to see if the payoff of whatever is planned for Garp’s narrative is worth more than him not stepping up to save ace, probably getting killed, and helping ace realize he’s loved
Garp couldnt operate the way he does if he was fleet admiral. We wanted to get as much influence as a marine to push his agenda of righteousness while keeping himself out of a role where the world gov would have direct influence on his actions.
To be fair it can go the other way around. If your family is evil and doing evil things to destroy the world and you say you're always for a family. That means no matter how evil or bad they are you're going to go with it and protect them.
Larry is right though that if Eustass Kid was caught by Black Beard instead of him being caught by Kaido then the Marines themselves would've just arrested him and placed him in Level 6 of Impel Down instead of displaying a public execution of Kid, so the only reason Ace was executed was for having the wrong genetics in the eyes of the World Government hence the same reason Akainu tried killing Luffy instead of Black Beard during the Paramount War.

It's so foul to me that we ignore the fact that Garp is making change in the world government by training the next generation of Marines. It's seems so obvious that Garp is triaing them to better stronger, not just physically, but emotionally than him and the rest of his generation. The beat example being Kuzan. He railed agajnst the idea of working for Akainu so much that when we was defeated, he defected. Dude had an idea of justice and refused to compromise on it. He also spared Robin's life agaknst his direct orders. And given what we've seen Koby and the other members of SWORD do, it's clear it's working.
Garp isn't training any next generation lol....kuzan joined garp on his own in training...the only people garp took in that was shown is koby and helmeppo...

I'm with larry with this one, fuji after becoming an admiral was able to disband the shichibukai. Garp has been in the marine and has been respected for so long, yet didn't even tried to do what fuji did. He didn't had the balls to try something like that

Fuji didn't do that alone. In fact, his major sway came from what he did in Dressrosa and that was because he had Smoker to kinda plan with him. Who does Garp have? Aokiji made the choices he did because of Garp's influence. The young marines are also different because of Garp.

I think Larry's points are more ethical in the sense that seb is just trying to add his reasoning , practically, and logic a little too much. But, I see Seb's points too. Ideally a hero does good things or fails trying instead of a hero doing what he thinks is possible/practical. If you agree with that sentiment, Larry is right if you agree with the later Seb is right

MMMMM Larry makes a good point…if Garp intervened against akainu instead of shanks to end the war the narrative changes ENTIRELY. Buggy was streaming that to the whole world. For them to see the “Hero” combat another marine it would open a LOT of eyes. Similar to how Vegapunk being a respected researcher made the world open their eyes. everyone knows that garp has made questionable decisions all throughout his life, but the question was talking about how he acted at marineford. i dont think he was a coward for his actions or lack of actions during that war, and i dont even think he was a coward for some of his decisions outside of that arc, such as not rising through the ranks. there is a limit to the amount of power a marine can hold and there are restrictions that are put in place for those of high ranks, which is one of the reasons why he didnt become an admiral or fleet armiral. sengoku probably made changes in the marines that garp wouldve made if he were in his seat, so its meaningless for him to even rise through the ranks, especially since no matter what he did, he would never be above the celestial dragons, the five elders, and imu. if he tried to disobey the world government as an admiral or fleet admiral he wouldve been killed, if he tried to start a rebellion against the world government not everyone wouldve followed him. most of the decisions we criticize garp for are those made in extremely complicated situations

Being the leader of Sword, Garp basically is a pirate with barriers. He can go do whatever he wants and in most cases it’ll be considered to be justice in the world. If he ever goes too far he can be immediately disowned by the marines.

If garp was In sword he would be just like koby useless to negotiate, since he already gave up his marine badge to join sword. When I first started watching top I disagreed with alot of Larry's takes and ended up with Seb on most things but as of late man....my boy Larry be SPITTIN. Also to the one super chatter in the video 10:18 , don't mean to be captain obvious but not all pirates are evil.
If Garp pulled a Dragon at Marine ford the Gorosei would have ceased to exist, Garp could have forced the Pirates to align themselves with him the marines already would have backed him and the revolutionary army would have been able to spring into action, yes the world generally have a positive view of the WG and the Marines but that would definitely have been a mask off moment and that could change the whole narrative.

That's why he places his bets on Koby, because Koby actually stood up to Akainu even when he was out matched. He stood up to Ax Hand morgan as a kid. He shown his enitire life, after meeting Luffy funnily enough, that he's has a the will to change the marines before they destroy themselves following the WG. He's sees the hope that can change the marines that he never truly had till now. Ace death was the ironically the spark he needed to realize that. That's why he was more than willing to throw his life away for Koby. Cause Koby could succeed where he failed. And I think that and the fact that his son and grandson did pick up the mantle of true change in his stead is some redemption for not doing more when he was younger.

The only reason the fight stopped when shanks had shown up was because the WG had already lost enough people and were not prepped to fight 2 yonko crews. As a soldier Larry right on point with some of these talking points and a lot of the times, lower enlisted and lower officers have had to make these decisions themselves in order to prevent more needless deaths.

It's so foul to me that we ignore the fact that Garp is making change in the world government by training the next generation of Marines. It's seems so obvious that Garp is triaing them to better stronger, not just physically, but emotionally than him and the rest of his generation. The beat example being Kuzan. He railed agajnst the idea of working for Akainu so much that when we was defeated, he defected. Dude had an idea of justice and refused to compromise on it. He also spared Robin's life agaknst his direct orders. And given what we've seen Koby and the other members of SWORD do, it's clear it's working.
Kuzan spared Robin but allowed the entire island of Ohara to burn. Minimal return on training the next gen to be better.

MMMMM Larry makes a good point…if Garp intervened against akainu instead of shanks to end the war the narrative changes ENTIRELY. Buggy was streaming that to the whole world. everyone knows that garp has made questionable decisions all throughout his life, but the question was talking about how he acted at marineford. i dont think he was a coward for his actions or lack of actions during that war, and i dont even think he was a coward for some of his decisions outside of that arc, such as not rising through the ranks. there is a limit to the amount of power a marine can hold and there are restrictions that are put in place for those of high ranks, which is one of the reasons why he didnt become an admiral or fleet armiral. sengoku probably made changes in the marines that garp wouldve made if he were in his seat, so its meaningless for him to even rise through the ranks, especially since no matter what he did, he would never be above the celestial dragons, the five elders, and imu. if he tried to disobey the world government as an admiral or fleet admiral he wouldve been killed, if he tried to start a rebellion against the world government not everyone wouldve followed him. most of the decisions we criticize garp for are those made in extremely complicated situations

Being the leader of Sword, Garp basically is a pirate with barriers. He can go do whatever he wants and in most cases it’ll be considered to be justice in the world. If he ever goes too far he can be immediately disowned by the marines.

If Garp pulled a Dragon at Marine ford the Gorosei would have ceased to exist, Garp could have forced the Pirates to align themselves with him the marines already would have backed him and the revolutionary army would have been able to spring into action, yes the world generally have a positive view of the WG and the Marines but that would definitely have been a mask off moment and that could change the whole narrative.
