Big huge park occupying all that space, and empty, except the one guy who came down to enjoy the fruits of his family's property tax based contributions. Its city government, so, they'll default to leaving the park empty and chasing you out, then go ask for more tax revenue to pay the police to do the chasing. Thats where having a local RC flying club can be useful for negotiating new friendlier rules and better informing the city council on RC flying.
Yeah I was a little perplexed when she told me I couldn't fly, especially because it was perfect weather and nobody around. But I guess rules are rules... There might be an RC flying club around where I live, but I haven't looked into yet because there are so many super nice, open, and usually empty parks
Except the AMA has made club fields unfathomably wretched. There's always THAT guy at the club who thinks he's a cop. And AMA is why the FAA conflated planes with drones. Those bastages sold out the hobby in order to sell more dead trees (a magazine subscription is mandatory). To hell with AMA.
10 bucks says, you'll find no such ordinance. Look for the sign of the park rules. If it's not on the sign, it doesn't exist and he's lying to you. I've had this happen to me so many times with my rc cars, that i started sueing my local PD for harassment. Won both cases. Police cannot make up laws to kick you out of a public park. It's not only a violation of their oath, is also a violation of 18 USC 241 "oppression of rights under the color of law"
Doesn’t matter. They have turned all these parks into dog parks literally. The police officer even admitted it. You rarely see any one actually using the fields anymore and it’s always Karen’s walking around with the the nasty dogs pooping everywhere. You can argue this all you want. I’ve been around long enough to see this get taken away from us.
The air space is the Jurisdiction of the FAA (and Transport Canada if you are in Canada) and not the city. They city can make what bylaws they want but that doesn't mean that they are legal. They can say that you can't land or takeoff in the park. Throw for takeoff and catch for landing. That way the plane never touches the property. It is also insanely stupid since flying a 100gram plane is way safer than a baseball flying through the air.
Yeah I wonder if I could just take off and land on the sidewalks since the plane is so small. And yeah I agree that a baseball of a frisbee would do more damage than a UMX plane flying slow...
So i guess flying a kite would be not allowed too, i would have challenged her more on it , but its perfectly fine for people walking their dogs shitting in the park
Turns out there is just an ordinance that says "no flying in the parks". The only issue is that the ordinance was passed 30 years ago, and planes have gotten a lot saver since then
Here in the UK, the fact that you are using a camera on the UAS, regardless of being sub 250, would mean you have to comply with all other rules/laws etc. Not that I personally agree with all that. Very much enjoyed the amusing video editing
If my taxes paid for a public park, I'd fly there. Fight it in court and the stupid ordinance goes buh-by. Then you and your new bestie can fly together in the park. Stupid laws dilute respect for ALL laws.
I wonder if that is actually a law or bylaw. I would like to read the words on that. This is a fear I have that I wont be able to fly except at a club field. I always fly in parks, abandon lots, and gravel pits.
It’s worth reading local ordinances, if you are concerned. Sometimes they may surprise you- one city may be very strict or even unreasonable, while a neighboring city may be very open. One city near my parents has a lot of restricted airspace due to airports, but there are no park ordinances, and there are a few parks that are all or mostly in unrestricted airspace. Other places have funny things like you can’t control an rc device from on park grounds, but if you launch from the sidewalk or parking lot you may not technically be in violation. However police have a lot of enforcement discretion, so if someone still talks to you, just be reasonable and cooperative even if you think you are technically in the right.
I actually spoke with the Director of Parks and Recreation of Savage, and they had to do some digging to find the ordinance. Turns out that Ordinance 377 was passed in 1994 and it states that flying or driving remote control vehicles is prohibited in the city parks. That's it. I've tried contacting the city council members and mayor, but I haven't gotten a response yet...
@Kleinage Yeah I use the UAV Forecast app which shows if the airspace is restricted for any reason. That park doesn't have any restrictions on it, but I guess the ordinance overrides that. But I couldn't agree more that cooler heads prevail, and being kind a respectful to whoever wonders about the RC planes
Because it upsets the dog walkers and the dogs, that’s why, they did the same thing to and all the parks around here where I live. I stopped supporting our local parks over all this. Yep, doing a good job. No one using the park except a single rc pilot sitting in a chair, flying a plane weighing less than her I phone. Yeah good interaction, but not great. How dare you put the public at risk flying a tiny foam plane in the park 😡😡😡 But you are OK to get out your baseball bat and hardball out and hit balls at 100 MPH + 🤣🤣🤣
So a couple things: 1 it’s on you to confirm whether or not what you’re doing is legal or not, BEFORE YOU DO IT. 2 you’re way too nice to the government agent that’s running you off of property you pay for. Even if you are in the wrong, it’s because there are laws in place that are ridiculous and unconstitutional, and he’s there enforcing them. He is not your friend. It’s about power with these government agents, and they always want to get the last word or make people follow orders. Like making you leave. And you did.
I suppose I'm against the elected officials in terms of the ordinance, and against the police in terms of them telling me to leave. A little dual threat if you will
