  • In this video, I go over the crappy service manual for the Volkswagen. Then I show you all of the things that you're supposed to remove before you take the inner door panel off. As you know, since my plastic rivets broke on the bracket for the door locking module, I was able to get away from that. However, I'm removing everything to show you the procedure. This will include removing lock cylinder housing, removing door window, window guides and quarter window frame. And finally, I believe we found the noise that was coming from this side. Enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

    Awesome! Thank you, this would have been impossible without the video showing all the hidden things you have to do. 2 comments just to improve though:
    1. the crazy nylon bushings that retain the window are super easy if you punch them out one at a time into the door. I am amazed at the VW instructions as the busings expand into each other, therefore have to collapse slightly to come out. Screwing a bolt in does not allow this contraction so it defeats the object and you have to overcome an interference fit.
    Re assembly I used a long 1/8" bolt and put a nut on it , then placed the nylon bushing over it and pushed it in.
    Also on reassembly I inserted the blade of a small screwdriver between the bottom of the glass and the top of the blue plastic mechanism to set the height of the hole in the glass.
    2. it is not necessary to remove the lower window seal that runs horizontally.
    3. on reassembly I tied a thin piece of string onto the small cable that connects to the door handle, and placed the other end through the hole where i connects to teh door handle, and then pulled it through when re installing the panel assembly.
    Does anyone know how to get rid of the aweful smell of crayons that comes with older VW's?

      +Sean Pretty Hey Sean and glad you left some comments to help other folks out. Hindsight is a wonderful thing isn't it? If I had to do those nylon bushings again, I would just drill them out since it's only about three dollars. Of course, punching it out works also. Thanks again Sean and glad to hear that everything worked out for you.

    Yes, I agree with you Dave. On this occasion, I do have Mitchell On-Demand and sadly, its docs weren't much better, yet its wiring diagrams are superb. On the other hand, Alldata seems to just photocopy what's in the manual. And you're right, TSB's will never show up with the hard copy which is where electronic docs outweigh the hard copies. Thanks for the comment Dave.

      +Gavin Thomas Hi Gavin...when I researched the Internet for this job, I didn't see anything at all about it. So, I thought it could be helpful to other folks to see what was involved when changing out the door lock module on the rear door. And of course, it is much different than the front door. Glad to hear that the videos will help you out in your repair and wish you all the success. Thanks Gavin for dropping in and leaving some comments.

    Yup you're right Joe! I've never seen so many Torx bolts in the last few years on cars. And they are on the domestic models over here too. Maybe, they're cheaper or something; I don't know what happened to the old-fashioned bolt. Thanks for commenting Joe.

    Thanks for the video, you just give me an idea how to do this job, but sorry you did it wrong, even I did this one day age on a passat are wrong too, don't need to remove those three rivets now, I did once long time ago on some other model ,the different are in this video 8;30 that window rail is fitting in front of the lock so you need to remove, that one not, it can do that the same way of the old model I did, I remove the carrier panel with the door lock and the outer handle all at once, but this ttwo models because the rail there, so I just need to remove the rail first, good job, for all other people, once again thanks!........... :)

    Fabulous video and schematic drawing of the door lock motor !!. Maybe overdue , but over there in the US you are missing the deadlock function of your doorlocks , therefore the #5 microswitch is missing on your printboard ! But not only that is missing , there are some essential sliding plates in the motor missing as well as this is a US version , which is without "deadlock " for some [ safety ] reason . See f.i on Google for pictures of an opened European door lock motor of a VW Passat B 5 , it contains an extra slider plate to push in microswitch #5 when deadlock funtion is on . Hope this shines a light for you on your frustration of having only four microswitches . :) Keep up your excellent work ! Greet from the old world !

      +Uncle Benz Thank you Uncle Benz and I did a more detailed look at door lock modules. This was a set of videos pertaining to the driver door lock module. You can do a search on this channel if you haven't seen them yet. I was aware of the missing switch, and there is a lot of theories about the missing switch, i.e. deadlock, safety but I'm not totally sure what the switch's purpose really is. Thanks again for dropping in and leaving your comments and Happy New Year!

    Just did this door lock actuator replacement but I didn’t remove the window or any of its related parts. It was a tight squeeze but all I had to do is loosen the bottom bolt of the window guide and was able to push it out of the way enough to get the old module out and the new one in.

    An excellent video - I've been wondering what hold the door lock assembly on my Mk4 Golf as the lock is loose and turning the screw did nothing to tighten it. I can now see why. I only wish my external door skin was removeable as I could have worked it out if I could have seen the carrier and locking mechanism. Many thanks, I now know how it works so can now resolve my problem - nowhere else could I find this information.

    You can remove the lock and the door handle without removing the door trim strip, vertical window post and window.
    If you lower the window and pull out the window rail, then undo the bolts for the vertical post, if you move the window back to the top the post can be moved out of the way enough whilst still in situ to do the job..

    Good video, would be a good idea to point out, that on refitting, the wire that attaches to the outside handle has to be located in the correct position or it will affect the central locking if fitted..the plastic clip can locate in various positions and if its too tight, the c/l doesn't work and if its too slack,the outside handle won't operate, hope this helps tx

    • @stuzman52
      @stuzman52  10 років тому

      Hi Stevie. The only thing that I remember about the outside door handle was that the door lock assembly has a spring clip that needs to be in a certain position before reattaching the cable. If that's what you're referring to, I mention this in the video, but not sure which video. I appreciate your comments and glad you enjoyed the video.

    • @stevieforbes2160
      @stevieforbes2160 10 років тому

      I hear you, no its not that, its the wire that goes from the lock mechanism to the external handle, it looks like it just slips into the handle(which it does) but it has various positions it can be inserted, tx..anyone having problems, who reads this will understand. .its only necessary for vehicles with central locking

      @stuzman52  10 років тому

      Hi Steve. I believe that we're taking about the same thing. If so, I didn't mention it in the disassembly video, but I mention it in the assembly video. stuzman52 yeah, thats it m8..mines didn't have that clip to free up the cable and therefore"setting the distance" unless I never saw it and got it the hard way, trial n error..good vids m8, and not "glorified" to make look easy. .more realistic,honest and anyone who works on cars knows it doesn't always go like the book says :)

    I do like paper dealers manuals, but they are sadly insufficient in many models. Occasionally I have found the electronic copies like alldata or mitchell to be better, because many repairs follow a common failure theme. It helps if a TSB is produced, which would never show up in an old paper copy.

    It looks so much complicated than the front door. I need to replace door lock module on drivers door, rear left door, and try to clean microswitch on rear back door... All of them have problem to recognize are the doors opened, or closed. But after seeing your videos of taking all that stuffs of rear door, i don't know is it smart to do it by myself. I have passat b5.5 1.9 tDI.
    Can you make a video of cleaning egr valve? Great videos you have. Very detailed explanations.
    EDIT:
    And something are scratching badly my rear windows when i lower or raise them.

    • @stuzman52
      @stuzman52  8 років тому

      You are correct that the rear doors are more complicated than the front. You're the only one who can answer the question of whether you can do it not. If you feel uncomfortable, then probably best that someone else does it. If I have an issue with the EGR valve, I'll do a video on it. Thanks for liking the videos and that you found them helpful.
