    Mars and the Moon are out there waiting for us to come and visit, and it’s only a matter of time. Once we go there, what happens? We can’t bring chickens to Mars, so what do we eat? Do we bring food for the entire 3-5 year mission? Do we grow food there? What happens when a short mission extends to long-term habitation? How exactly are we going to feed an off-world population?

    Explorers and travelers throughout history have had to develop methods for preserving food and carrying enough food for their journeys. Fun fact:
    The reason artificial purple (or really, red and blue) light is used to grow plants is because green is largely useless. You can save 1/3 of the energy by eliminating green light to have the same yield.

      this is true, its because the chloroplast is green and green stuff dosent absorb green stuff very well. you wanna use the opposite color like purple or red or smt. maybe if the sun was green then all our plants would be purple :)

      The plants are cutting out green because it is the middle of the spectrum that they can harness, and they don't want to get cooked on a bright day, so they absorb the edges which are unlikely to spike together and reflect the middle for safety.

    The coolest thing to me will be the day we successfully grow something on Mars. When that happens it's exciting to think that matter that has been on Mars for millions of years will be merged with a terrestrial life form from Earth and then consumed by an astronaut. A human will have consumed martian matter!!! That's just so cool to think about.

    While we are shipping food to space there is a good argument to ship meat. While not the most effective or efficient to grow on a per unit of energy per calorie, or money per calorie, it is really good on a pound per calorie, and also contains far more micro-nutrients per serving. When every ounce costs so much to ship stuff into space, it makes lots of sense to send that.
    I have had some weird health issues the past few years, and getting to the bottom of it in 2020 has been... difficult. But because I am allergic to so many things, I am eating more meats than I use to. Not my favorite thing, but it has been a weird learning experience, because after I shifted from a diet heavy in grains to one that is heavy on protein, I found that I was not eating nearly as much. Just not as hungry in general, and less hangry when I do get hungry.

    • @TraceDominguez
      @TraceDominguez  3 роки тому

      That’s interesting to think about. I mean, if we ARE shipping all the food that may be true, but we’d have to figure out how to make those nutrients stable for years in space and on Mars which can be tough. Growing them there is going to be more efficient in the longer term, so we’ll see!

    • @CaedenV
      @CaedenV 3 роки тому

      @@TraceDominguez Absolutely, the goal is to grow what we can in space or on other planets. And once we have this down, then growing plants makes much more sense than growing plants to feed to animals to eat the animals. But growing traditional plants may also not be the 'best use' either. It may be far more efficient to grow an algae slurry as it can grow suspended in water that is in a sealed environment... maybe not the greatest to chow down on psychologically, but it may be so easy and effective that it could be unavoidable for multi-year self sustaining expeditions.

    I wonder what kinds of research are being done to figure out if it's possible to do some terraforming in the small using various plants and animals to help turn regolith into usable soil. After all, there are plants that seem well-suited to breaking down stone into a growth medium, even if the process is _very_ slow.

    If "meat" were desired as a Mars food option, the only kind that is close to being sustainable would be eggs, of course from chickens.

    1 solution is O'Neill cylinders for farming. We could even make nature preserves as large as Madagascar up there. Main problem would be solar wide infrastructure.
    I'd say long off solution but with robotics, 3D printing, and a growing knowledge of how to manipulate the elements. Let alone unknown discoveries to come. It might be something my grandchildren see staring while raising children.
    Lunar mining and the construction bonus of a tiny gravity well! That opens up mining asteroids. The leftover rumble is good shielding for the cylinders.

    Trace, just an advice that might work: try to push up views by 'some' means just so you can push to 100k+. People tend to click on videos that have lots of views even when they aren't actually interested in the topic. You thumbnails and titles are great, but you just need a bit of a kickstart for a while (maybe 1-2 months) and you'll start to see your channel run by itself faster exponentially.

    Trace Dominguez: Gains loads of new viewers off the back of the Tom Scott video.
    Makes a decent video.
    Ends it with a vegetabilist rant and loses the new viewers.
    Humans have evolved to be omnivorous over millions of years. We don't need to "evolve" over a few decades to live without meat.
