STYX Paradise Theater - The thing no one noticed!

  • STYX Paradise Theater sold millions of copies, and yet few people noticed the secret image etched in the vinyl itself!
    Dennis DeYoung had been thinking in concept album terms for a while, and this was the first album where it was really obvious. The album roughly tells the story of the rise and fall of a theater called "Paradise." The front and back covers show the theater when it opened and after it was shut down. The two albums sides were called "acts" and one of them had a hidden image that many people never noticed.

    I still have my *Paradise Theater* vinyl. I certainly noticed it, the first time I opened up the album...

      Me too! Weird though, I thought the back of my album had Paradise theater and the picture from the front of the album cover. I could be losing my mind so I plan to go back home and look and see what it actually has etched on that side of the album.

    I remember thinking this was the coolest thing when I bought this album. As a kid, buying a new record was an event. Going over the cover art...praying the inner sleeve had lyrics...getting hyped when it was a gatefold cover.

    Without looking it up, this is from memory, and three decades plus of working in record stores…
    As a huge Styx fan, l noticed this right away, when l bought the elpee as a young teenager. I’m pretty sure that this was a brief “fad” that A&M Records did in the early 1980s. To my knowledge, the label released only three full length albums with the laser etchings: Styx - Paradise Theatre, Split Enz - True Colors, and the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to the film Superman II.
    Very cool, thanks for highlighting the groovilicious, nutritious and delicious aspect of laser etched vinyl.
    Cheers from Noo Yawk, ova heyah!

    It's not a thing that nobody noticed. If you had this record when it came out you knew about the laser etched image on the record. Nice that covered this, but we all knew about it and we knew that only certain copies had it!

    Split Enz - True Colors released the first laser etched vinyl. Styx was second with Paradise Theatre. Styx also released the world's first laser etched single.
    The laser etched Paradise Theatre pressing was at least 500,000 copies... it wasn't rare or unnoticed... and no, not "every copy" has it ;)

    I didn't know about this particular album having the imagery in the product but I recall a couple of other albums that did this. The soundtracks to both one of the Superman movies and the first Star Trek (I think) movie had images. (The ST might have been ST II, Wrath of Khan. It's been a while since I've seen these records.)

    Erm, when I bought my copy of Paradise Theatre in 1981 it had a sticker on the cover saying the record was lazer etched. Also, the single Best Of Times which was released prior to the album was lazer etched as well. Another A&M album that was lazer etched was True Colours by Split Enz, though the original versions of that album didn't have it. I'm pretty sure everyone who bought the Paradise Theatre album back in 81 knew about the lazer etching.

    anyone that physically puts the B side on the turntable and drops the needle will notice this as soon as the platter starts spinning. i'll take it one step further, most DJ tables had a light mounted to a flexible wand, and when you angle it at the record just right you'd see the reflection of that logo spinning around on the ceiling. :)

    • @3randomrecords
      @3randomrecords  2 роки тому

      We've had several people talk about the reflection, I've never seen it.
      It was surprising how many people didn't see the etching. When we posted this on Tiktok, many people who still own the album had never noticed it commented about it, one guy even made a video about how he had never noticed. Crazy huh?

    You can find many without the laser etching. I have a 1985 copy that has the black/silver/gold label that was typical of that time and no laser etching on the album. I have one copy from 1982 pressed in East Germany no laser etching. I have a SuperDiscs copy with no laser etching. I have one that's a USA pressing that has the old silver/brown standard A&M labels with no laser etching. I collect different variants of this record. Love the record.

    I don't really think it is accurate to say "few people noticed." Kind of a silly claim for anyone of a certain age.

    • @3randomrecords
      @3randomrecords  2 роки тому

      You're probably correct.
      We have our big record collection in the front of the studio, and the record collection is almost always a conversation piece, especially with people my age. This Styx record is one that I pull out frequently to show people. Amazingly, over all the years of people coming in and out of the studio, I am not sure that a single person I've shown it to had ever seen it before. So at least in my universe the statement is accurate. :)
