  • From www.kevincaron.com - Artist Kevin Caron gives Everlast's new MIG / TIG / stick welder a spin - come along! ....
    Caron is looking at Everlast's new PowerMTS 251Si. It's Everlast's brand new MIG / TIG / stick welder, and he says they've made some great improvements to it.
    Caron turns on the machine - you can tell because the display panel is lit - but the welder is almost silent. "Can you hear that cooling fan screaming in the background?" he asks. "Isn't that niice? It's a quiet, quiet fan, but it appears to push a lot of air through there." The welder's duty cycle at 250 amps is 35% - that's at maxiumum amperage.
    One of the other changes Everlast has made on the machine is that it now has Lift Start and High Frequency start - as far as Caron knows, it's the first multiprocess welder that has both types of start for TIG welding.
    Caron emphasizes that this machine is DC only, but if you want to weld aluminum, it is spool gun capable.
    The last great change is pulse. Not only does the machine have pulse in MIG, it also has pulse in the spool gun setting and in TIG.
    They also have a Synergic function for the spool gun and MIG that lets you designate what type of wire you're using - steel, stainless steel, aluminum - and what size wire you're using. Then you just adjust your voltage, and the welder selects amps for you. You also can override this automatic function by just going back to your standard setting and adjust it any way you want.
    Caron has been using the welder for the past few days on a sculpture he's been fabricating and he likes it. It's easy to set up, easy to start welding with it, and he really likes how easy it is to switch from MIG to TIG. You just swap cables, push a couple of buttons, change to a different welding gas bottle, and you're using the other type of welder. So it's easy to switch back and forth.
    Now it's time to make some sparks! Caron puts on his safety equipment and gives a brief rundown of his settings on the panel. He has the machine set on MIG pulse, with 22.8 volts on the high side and 252 inches on the wire feed. Then if you scroll through all the settings, you find that the pulse time is set at 32, pulse frequency is set at 70%. The base voltage is set at 61% of the welding voltage - so that's 61% of 22.8. You can also set your downslope, your post flow, etc.
    Next Caron welds some sections on the sculpture. Then he shows the finished welds. "It runs a nice little bead," he says, showing several welds. The first one looked a little cold, though, so he boosted the voltage from 22.8 to 24 volts, so the subsequent welds look better.
    Some other facts about this machine: It will run on 110 or 220, and right now - it's brand new - it's $1689. That's for a 250 MIG / TIG / stick that can run on 110 or 220.
    "It's a nice machine," Caron says. "I'm going to have fun getting to know this one better." He'll play with the TIG and do a video on that, and do the same for the stick (arc) welder.
    It's time for Caron to go back to work, so you have time to check out more how-to videos at www.kevincaron.com
    Or you could take a moment and enjoy his special guest ....

    Just found this model today (2023) and is #1 candidate to consolidate my various welders: STICK Miller 225 Thunderbolt + TC-150 DC Converter box, MIG: Astro PowerMIG 110, TIG Kemppi PS2800/TU20. I'm selling my ESAB PCM875 Plasma and getting a metal cutting circular saw. I have a 18x24 shop/garage with NO space! The PULSE and HF are HUGE features for me.
    NOTE: Since this model is years old now, have to check to see if there is something even more attractive (!) But I'm already chomping at the bit, I want one. BTW The Kemppi TIG is my first TIG and I've not had a chance to set it up and start learning. I'm 70, and things just don't happen that fast any more (!) LOL

      I'm looking into multi process welders. Miller is to expensive, ESAB is a pain for maintance and expensive. Everlast seems to be the best multiprocess starter welder.

    This welder has changed a lot from 2015 to 2017. Mine is a year old and it has a larger cabinet and it will take a 12 inch 44# spool of wire. A year later mine is working flawlessly. It took awhile to get the shipping damage repaired. Everlast was great at handling the warranty repair parts. The fitting on my regulator leaked and Everlast sent me a new one that was better but it also had a small leak. I bought a new fitting at a welding supply store and I haven't had anymore leaks at the valve. I had tried three different cyl and they all leaked. I would recommend replacing the gas hose that comes with the welder. A good 3/16 or 1/4 inch hose will greatly reduce gas blast when starting to MIG weld. There's not much this welder will not do. I do small art projects and build trailers. Everlast doesn't recommend using E6010 rod but this welder runs it without any problem. With a little PVC pipe and some 14 ga metal and a bolt you can make an adapter to use 4 inch spools of wire. Lincoln 10# spools don't fit this welder very well. Lincoln spools only have a notch for pin on the holder. This welder has a long pin that bottoms out causing the wire spool to wobble. All other spools fit this welder just fine.

    My Lincoln 8 inch spools will not fit on my 251 SI. Lincoln spool only has a shallow notch for the pin on the adapter to go into. Harbor Freight and Hobart spools have a deep hole in the spool. I guess you could cut all but about 1/8 of an inch off the pin on the adapter would work too.

    Help! Everlast MTS 251Si stick and tig show zero on the left digital readout. Just sent one back and got one that shows the same and will NOT give me an arc. First one did for a day, showed numbers on the left, then the next day the left showed zero and I could not strike an arc. I went through Ironworking apprenticeship, and have struck 1000's of arcs. Please know what to do to help!

      First thing you need to do is contact Everlast tech support. But if I was standing there I would check your power supply at the plug. I had a loose connection in my plug and it drove the machines crazy! Lost 2 circuit boards on 1 machine before I figured out what was going on. You might also try plugging the machine in to 110 volt and see if it works there.

    Hi Kevin-thanks for the video. Was trying to decide between this machine and the double pulse mig everlast offers. I know you have both. After watching Zilla dial the double pulse in, im inclined toward this one. Wondering your opinion if you could give it. Thanks.

    • @KevincaronSculpture

      Once I downloaded the manual from Everlast on the 253dpi machine it was a lot easier to learn how to get the dual-pulse to work. I still like the MTS 251si better because it has the tig function. I did try to use the 253dpi with aluminum and a teflon liner but never could get it dialed in correctly. I am sure it was all me and not the machine. When I would run the 253dpi on steel and dual pulse it works well. More practice I guess!

      Hey Kevin-I finally pulled the trigger and bought the 251si....kinda sorry though, as there is zero support for it from everlast concerning the pulse function. I agree the tig pulse is nice( I already have a primeweld tig 225 so kinda redundant) and it performs well in man/synergic mig and stick. My question is - have you ever run across a chart for the pulse mig settings? For the life of me I can't understand why Everlast would not include one with the machine. I even called and spoke with Mark. All I got was shamed for not buying the 253dpi until my cell disconnected. All I'd need is basic ball park settings to help get it close. From my conversation with Mark I don't think they have this info even if they wanted to give it out. I'm hoping someone with more knowledge than I may have formulated a homemade chart. Anyway thanks for the videos.

      Hi Kevin- not sure if you still have the everlast 251si or not but since we commented I had to let you know I cracked the pulsed mig formula. It took me a full bottle of argon and about 2 pounds of wire but I'm getting gorgeous single pulse stringers on 1/8". I will be going through all the aluminum thicknesses and gauges before starting pulsed spray steel next. If you are interested on the settings here they are: 20.2v peak, 272ipm, 70%base volts, 150hz, and 65 pulse time on using .035 -4943 hobart wire on 1/8" 6061 using the Parke spool gun.. The surprise was the added ipm over what .035 should use. If you have any questions shoot me a PM or a reply. Hope this helps.

    Kevin,
    Thanks for your videos - I like the different perspective you offer. Question: How did you establish baseline settings for the Everlast 251Si in pulse mig mode? I can't find anything on a starting point setting wise for a given thickness. The owner's manual provides setting charts but no recommendations for single pulse mig.
    Thanks again!

    • @KevincaronSculpture
      @KevincaronSculpture  2 роки тому

      I just guess! How is the fit? Is there a gap? How thick? The settings will change just from one side of the piece to the other. There are no set rules as far as I know. Thank you for watching and posting.

    This is my top choice for my first welder. I have one question. I do not want to wear out my port on my machine switching gasses for each process. I have seen adapters for quick connects but I am not sure what one to get. Could you recommend one for the machine to hose side? I would like to leave my bottles connected and just quick connect the gas I would like to use

    hey Kevin, thanks for the intro video to the MTS 251Si, I want to get into welding and fabricating, and I am a bit confused on the whole dual voltage machines. what are the machined limitations when used at 110 verses 220v?

    • @KevincaronSculpture
      @KevincaronSculpture  8 років тому

      +addison cuevas For most of the duel voltage machine you will lose about 1/2 of your output volt or amps depending on what kind of machine you are talking about.. That is really the only thing to be to keep in mind with the dual voltage machines..

    Looks like a sweet machine, thanks for sharing. I'd like to make a request. I realize you have an obligation to do these product reviews in exchange for receiving free products or compensation. That's all good. But looking at your website, and seeing glimpses in some of your videos, it looks like you build some really cool things, would be awesome to see more about what your working on, and how you go about it. Like that Ellis bandsaw you showed, would be good to see you using that to cut materials for one of your projects...

      @KevincaronSculpture  9 років тому +1

      Randy Pullman Have never used a Hobart but I would put this at about a 8 or 9 against a Miller for quality in build. As for performance I would put it against a MIller any day. Uses less power and costs about half of the Miller multi machine.. Oh yeah, and this one comes with the tig kit.. You don't have to pay extra like the Miller..

      Yeah, people will plug a welder in to an voltage inverter and blow a ic board. My point is a miller has 100% duty cycle and the quality of the work is deep and beautiful. Unlike my Hobart that has a 20%dc and just can't get a good deep weld.
