Wow! I’ve watched countless hours of overland rigs but yours is the best by far! As other have requested I’d love to see a detailed beginning to end construction of your inside roof rack with all hardware used. Incredible!
I’ve lived the vanlife and built multiple rigs but this might be the best and most practical setup I’ve seen to date. Simple is better. Great work, you are very inspiring!
I just watched the tour of your rig over on SUV RV'ing's channel. Wow! Super impressive. Your mind and mine work in a very similar manner...clever but simple beats complicated in my book. Bravo!
This is by far the best "no build" I've seen (I've seen hundreds, possibly thousands). And this is my 2nd time watching this vlog. Thanks for all the tips. I find them very useful. I'm waiting for my new AWD to arrive and hopefully do what you've done. Thank you.
That’s so nice of you to say. I’m hoping to post more videos soon. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck with your build. Can’t wait to see it.
I have the same 4 runner . Can you tell me how many of the bars I need to complete the roof rack. New at this. Please and thank you 😊 I saw them on Amazon on your link just didn’t know how many to orderof joint and bar.
OMG. Do you know that I am your biggest fan. Love love love you. I have watched your tour video so many times and all your other videos. You inspired me to do more with less. I even drove by your house in Vegas once when you were living there and saw your white beast in the driveway but I didn’t want to stop and say hi for fear you would think I was creeping on you, which of course I totally was. How’s that for a fan boy. 🤪 But seriously. You commenting on my build is mind blowing. You are my hero!

Yours is the most organized dwelling vehicle that I’ve ever seen. I’m impressed. Most vehicle dwellers are so disorganized that I think no way could I live like this. You have inspired me! ❤️
That is a great looking setup and that inside roof rack is genius. I have been thinking about trying to get a weekend getaway rig and that would actually be a perfect set up.
I'm working on my bed in my CR-V '05. But I can't seem to manage to keep it from wobbling... but when I'm done with it, I'm going on my best trip ever across Norway.

I’m just blown away with the thought that’s gone into this and level of detail. I also like to keep everything below window level and looking black (I use plain black fleece blanket for anything on passenger side down by feet). Curious if you’ve thought of sone night vision camera setup to see what’s outside at night. As a female heading out solo, at times that would be useful. For the limo film, if one comes right up against the vehicle and shines a flashlight in, I take it you’ll be able to see inside? That fire extinguisher looks genius - will be looking for that.
PS - Do you ever stay put in the same place for several days? Where would you store a larger comfy chair (have a hammock chair in addition to my hammock, as well as one of those shelters to go around picnic table).
I truly am a minimalist and get rid of everything I don’t use. The front seat is the most comfortable seat. I also sit on the rear bumper. In the over 400 nights I’ve slept in the rig I have only had two people come up to the rig at night. Both in cities. No issues either time.
Just awesome build! I like the idea of an inner roof rack. I thought about doing something similar, but using aluminium profiles didn't occur to me, that's what I need! My only concern is that the stuff in the back is not secured in any way. In the event of emergency braking or a collision, it will catapult them forward. A mattress won't do any harm, but a portable battery or other hard and heavy things could hurt you. You can figure out a way to secure them, or use a synthetic cargo net behind the driver's and passenger's seats.
Hello and thank you so much for sharing your ideas! I have noted most of them. Some of the best I've seen yet. YES PLEASE do a video on the design, construction and installation of the roof rack. I have a pair of magnetic lights like this. Never thought of putting them on vehicle temporarily while I get situated at a campsite at night. Nice rig, thanks for the tip.
I love that interior, ceiling rack! I thought about that type of thing for years, but couldn’t figure out how to do it without destroying my interior roof ceiling and headliner-I don’t have all the attachment points that you have but I think I can make something work up there.
This is an awesome setup! I love the simplicity and minimalist approach. I have been outfitting my Buick Encore with a similar "no build" approach, but I added shelving on one side to maximize storage space, since the vehicle is quite small. You have presented some of the best ideas I have seen. Super helpful. Thanks!
This is an amazing simple setup, the idea to keep it stealth is great. I wanna keep it as stealth as i can, but because i am a kayaking guy i cannot fold that 4 meter long thing into my car :-) anyways great job!

Can you show a clear shot of the passenger area, how the build was done? Everyone just scans through that and if you have to remove seats, that is the biggest work in a SUV because of the seats not laying down flesh or wanted the extra storage space.

…and then, the vault!! 😳 They have similar internal bar/rack systems in Japan - I’ve been wanting a single bar for ages, but have yet to add welding to my repertoire! The 80/20 solution is perfect, just wish that stuff was a lot more commonly available here in Australia. I’m off to watch your other vids now 👍👍

Tawny, thank you for the accolades. What’s wonderful message. The total cost is probably a bit more than you would realize because of the “overland” setup. The suspension is $3k and the tires are $1k. The internal roof rack was around $500 but the functionality is priceless. The flashlights are not solar but they are rechargeable and I recharge them from my solar setup. If you are not planning on going off road the. You could probably build this setup for under a grand. Eat of luck with your build. Send me pics as you go along.

Wow! I love how you solved each problem with solutions that simply work vs complicated common solutions many use that don't work as well. I am wondering how much actual ground clearance you gained by doing the 3" lift?
That’s a good question. Seems to be a lot since I’ve never bottomed out on any trail. I took the rig to Moab last year and scared the hell out of myself but never touched the bottom once. The biggest upgrade to the lift is the drive quality on the highway. No front end diving when braking and no rocking from side to side on sharp turns. Vast improvement in handling.
I have always thought that complicated builds are just a waste of space and provide relatively poor functionality. I love your setup, you have everything that one really needs.
Great job! Looks great and I love how intentional every item is. I'm in the process of building out a minivan but have gotten some design inspiration from you. I'd love to know more about the window screens you made. Any chance you would ever make a video showing details of how you made it?
You have an awesome setup! I really like how you used the space in your rig. I have the netting on my windows but might need to see about making it look cleaner. Great job, and thanks for sharing!
LOTS of great ideas. Missed locating where you have the weBoost antenna. I had the same solar panels and set up and great for being stealthy. Unfortunately, I have to carry a bicycle and the rack and crossbars shadows across the panels made them ineffective. Currently exploring other setups that includes the bicycle rack and the best panel efficiency while maintaining the most stealth setup. Thanks for taking the time to make a list of so many great items. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, the bike is a tough one. At one point I had a folding bike inside the rig but as you can imagine, things got a bit crowded. The antenna comes out the back hatch and sits just behind the solar panels. Probably not the best location for gain but it’s what I could come up with at the time. Let me know if you have any ideas for future vids. Cheers!!
Hello and thank you for sharing your great ideas. I can't seem to find the clothes line clamps on the back of your build. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
hey !! my 4Runner just seems so small inside it . You are very organized and have good ideas here ! hope you have some links to stuff like im liking the inside ceiling mount ! wondered how you ran yourcables from your solar panels ~ and holes made ? And is that just going to the jackery 500 ? how is that 500 working out for you with your frige ? And is that why you keep 2 of the solar panels on top ?
Great videos. I started canoe tripping and backpacking, and got a 4runner TRD Pro several months ago (advice to everyone: don't pay the premium for the TRD Pro - I wish I got the Off Road Premium and upgraded with the money saved). The Overland crowd can learn a thing or two from backpackers and canoe trippers. All this heavy, big stuff - for what? A rooftop tent just seems like the biggest waste of all. I have a tent that weighs 1.3 lbs, can take 60 mph winds, and sets up just as quickly as a Rooftop tent. Anyway, we moved to California which didn't work out. I may be going back east for a new job, and I will likely live out of my 4Runner for 2 months while my kid finishes school and I shop for a house. Why would I pay rent for just me? Our whole family can live 2 weeks out of a canoe. I think I could be comfortable and have adventures by myself in my 4runner. I love the platform and everything about it.
Love it! Inspiring video. 👍 Similar to what I have been doing, minimal and modular. I saw you removed your rear seat side shoulder seatbelts, I’ve been wanting to do this. Easy to do? Was wondering if there’s an airbag just above wheee the seatbelt comes out.
Love your setup, I just don't understand why everyone keep buying a Jackery or other "power station". Buying a spare car battery and an inverter is way cheaper AND has more power. Other than the Jackery is portable is you want to take it out of the car to the campfire, I just don't see the benefit.
I agree. But most people are afraid of electricity or don’t want to take the time to understand it so they just go for the all in one solution. I think that was my thinking back then.
I’m unable to find the ball mounts you mention that you use to mount a camera on your interior rack. They I couldn’t find them on the 8020 catalog. Please advise.
Will you please share info on your internal rack system? Best I have seen with no impact to the vehicle and the ability to have all the attachments. Thanks!

You can figure out a way to secure them, or use a synthetic cargo net behind the driver's and passenger's seats.

@@minimalistoverlander Thank you for taking the time to get back to me with the info and the link!
Vast improvement in handling.
great video thanks :)
I have always thought that complicated builds are just a waste of space and provide relatively poor functionality. I love your setup, you have everything that one really needs.
Thank you. That means a lot.
This is a great low key build. Gives me some ideas.
Cheers
Thats a pretty cool gas storage, I might do this for my tailgate on my 1st gen tacoma. I also have seen the seasuckers or whatever theyre called.
Very cool!
Great job! Looks great and I love how intentional every item is. I'm in the process of building out a minivan but have gotten some design inspiration from you. I'd love to know more about the window screens you made. Any chance you would ever make a video showing details of how you made it?
That’ll be my next video.
Love your setup! What is the brand fridge and electric cooker?
Look in the “more…” section.
Great tips. Your travel philosophy is similar to mines's.
You have an awesome setup! I really like how you used the space in your rig. I have the netting on my windows but might need to see about making it look cleaner. Great job, and thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome. See you down the road.
Hi there! Love the video! What clips did you use to store your fire extinguishers? Sorry if I missed this! Thank you!
The same company makes a clip for the extinguisher.
Some smart ideas and very inspiring!thanks, subscribed
Great tips. Your travel philosophy is similar yo mineKs
Love it! Great job setting up. If you’re ever in So. Cal, reach out. I’d love to see your set up. I’m going to start building mine out.
Will do and let me know how your build goes.
Awesome!
Thanks Anna. ❤️

See my solar video
Wow! Thank you so much!! Best of luck! I’m originally from the Boston area. Love New England.
Love it! Inspiring video. 👍 Similar to what I have been doing, minimal and modular.
I saw you removed your rear seat side shoulder seatbelts, I’ve been wanting to do this. Easy to do? Was wondering if there’s an airbag just above wheee the seatbelt comes out.
Very easy. No airbag issues.
Hey John, amazing video. Question: How long exactly is the cargo space once you remvoe the back seats?
74”
Awesome
Great upload as usual 👌🏻😍😍👍🏻
I’m unable to find the ball mounts you mention that you use to mount a camera on your interior rack. They I couldn’t find them on the 8020 catalog. Please advise.

Will you please share info on your internal rack system? Best I have seen with no impact to the vehicle and the ability to have all the attachments. Thanks!
Will do
do you use the filter for those water jugs or is it there incase you run out?
Incase I run out
