America’s First Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship

  • Since its heyday in the late 1800s, bare-knuckle boxing in the US has been relegated to parking lots and grimy basements, an underground sport that couldn’t find a way to bring itself above board. But in June of 2018-after spending years petitioning almost 30 states to sanction the brutal fights-promoter David Feldman finally managed to stage America's first-ever legal bare-knuckle boxing match in Wyoming.
VICE went to the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championships in Cheyenne a few days ahead of the big event to hear how Feldman managed to pull it off, and to meet a handful of fighters for whom boxing-and even MMA fighting-just isn’t hardcore enough.

Back when bare knuckle boxing was the normal you would see less brain damage because boxers wouldn’t punch full power because they would be scared of breaking their hands. The longest boxing match ever lasted over 50 rounds and only ended when both fighters gave out of exhaustion. With bare knuckle boxing less knockouts happened and allowed better and longer fights. The reason why bare knuckle boxing is illegal is because it opens more cuts and blood is scary to some people.

I'm a huge fan of decent education, especially the kind that uplifts individuals to think for themselves, and give them the tools to go out and learn anything their hearts desire. Honestly... though... the best teachers I've had were all unconventional that saw the world from an unusual perspective, and they were very good at questioning what many took for granted.

School/education at its best would equip and empower a person to live well. Anything short is denying a person from teaching their full potential.

… but that is exactly what happened.
UFC when it first came out had no weight class and one martial art would go agaisnt anything else. And it was bare knuckle. So, this person's UA-cam account doesn't know what he's talking about. Ya'll forgotten about Hoyce Gracie and Shamrock already? They were BARE KNUCKLE in 1995. EVERYONE was bare knuckle back then! So VICE needs to get it together.
Maybe its in the words "AMERICAS" & "FIRST" & "CHAMPIONSHIP". But UFC started as bare knuckle and classless and there was no weight class either. Just BRAWLERS vs BRAWLERS, regardless if you were ju jitsu, taekwondo, boxer, street fighter, … it didn't matter what you were. If you thought you were a FIGHTER and you wanted some, you came and got some! I've seen skinny guys fight big muscle moutains. I seen short guys fight tall guys. I've seem 3rd degree black belts fight street fighters.
It was far more "entertaining" back in its early days. Then it became popularized and managed and boring.

    LEGENDARY.

    • @fooglez
      @fooglez 5 років тому +8

@Tom Silverheart That's a judgement call based on your limited viewing of actual hockey fights while also completely missing the point.
I don't think the current NHL is a good representation of bare-knuckle boxing on the ice. However, if you watch some of the more "backyard" or even some of the lower pro leagues under NHL, there is still a lot of the goon aspect involved. You need only to look to the past and see there were countless fights in the 80's that resulted in blood baths. These men often trained in formal boxing to keep up with their skills on the ice. (Ray Emery - Goaltender was a proficient boxer, there's COUNTLESS others, but I won't go into a list)
Fighting on the ice is very different from in the ring too, you just got done playing a hard working shift, your coach asks you to step in, you get in a scrum to help get your teams motivation back and draw the energy from the crowd to hopefully make a nice turn for your team. Then you have to play out the rest of the game after. So to say its only 10-15 seconds is like excluding the swimming and biking a triathlon runner just did and say well, it doesn't count cause you only ran half of what normal runners run. Most of the time, you're right, they are missing, glancing, punching helmets, or having an intense hugging match - but that's street fighting though. However, if you watch some of the actual fights on a hockey rink, they are brutal and the only "real" bare knuckle fight you can pay to watch in today's modern age.
To me, this bare-knuckle boxing gave a nod of respect towards one of the only modern sports to incorporate bare knuckle fights in the game and allow it as a tactic to let you change the tide of the game. It's sad that the NHL has turned into a wussy sport. I like to compare it from full contact football to flag football. Now a days, the NHL is just a shell of what it's former league once was - the grit is no longer there and they prefer Skill over Will.

There's only one way to punch anything that hard without significant training, and that's to have naturally good punching mechanics. That knockout strike was virtually a textbook hapkido strike, and probably how boxers get taught to throw overhand strikes. Perfect, tight shoulder roll forward that whips the arm and hand over the top, making impact at full extension in a downward direction, tightly closed fist, and turning the thumb down towards the ground after impact. They are devastating strikes.
I was at a bar once and a bunch of big dudes (210-260lbs) were wailing on one of those boxing games that measures how hard you punch. The machine maxes out at 1000. 1000 what? Who knows. They had pushed the high score up to 790. They were at this for about 20 minutes taking turns. When they were done I went over and fed a coin in, hit it once and got 862 at a weight of around 195lbs. Owner comes out of his office and buys me a drink and says he'd never heard anyone hit the machine that hard in the 6 years he had it. Mechanics make ALL the difference. The look one of the dudes gave me when he walked over to see the score was of disbelief, but also respect.

Smart move by Joe Rogan. How can you pad and justify the UFC? Seek to justify a lower animalistic form of fighting. I just love that intro where they have some dude tell his poor life choices of street fighting as a sob story, and try to make into a success story of doing it as a profession..."kill or be killed", what a novel degradation of values.

Is it fair to conclude that you aren't thinking things through? Maybe. It would help if you can explain/demonstarte why "here" is an improvement or rather a step back for humanity.
In anticipation of the response being under thought and naive, I would like to state that "freedom" and "rights" do come with consequences. These consequences can be beneficial or an additional problem. I do not see promoting street fighting as being beneficial. I see it promoting more violence on the streets.
