This song came out in the summer of 1998 when I was 13. I loved music videos back then (still do) and watched Much Music constantly. In the 90s, the representation of gay people on TV and in movies was that we were a punchline. Someone to make fun of and definitely not someone you wanted to identify with - from what I had seen anyway. Seeing this music video was the first time I witnessed any reference to a gay person being seen for who they are and not made into a joke. I'll never forget that feeling of being seen for the first time, and I will always love this video for that.
Miles From Our Home is perhaps my favorite Cowboy Junkies album. Beginning with; New Dawn Coming, Blue Guitar, Miles From Our Home and ending with At The End Of The Rainbow the album shouts with intelligent and introspective songwriting and superb performances. In my humble opinion, Margo Timmins's sultry voice reaches new heights on this album and both her brothers, Michael and Peter, as well as Alan Anton on bass match her flawless performance. An absolutely extraordinary band from Canada who have been a musical inspiration and blessing to the world for over twenty years. Peace and blessings to all.
Please pardon me making a comment so soon but you make an emotional lighting bolt strait to my deepest heart with your voice, these musicians and these words that I am left wanting more every time I listen to you guys and that is very often. In this cruel world I can only thank you from the deepest depth of my heart. Peace from East Texas 2022...
Well I am 37 years old now.... I was working as a model/actor back then and went in for a casting for this part....got the role and worked with a great director... The guy was speaking cantonese (but he wasn't chinese which is why his accent wasn't great)..... I've worked in film, tv, videos, commercials....but mostly done musicals.... Hope that answers all your questions...
Jason Chow nice to meet you I really love this video and I cry to it almost every time I see it because because I'm the guy in the long hair many years ago. Not the actual guy but the real life guy lol. Is this song has been a part of my Performing repertoire since it came out. I love these guys
I have to say...this is one of my favorite songs and videos. Your a good actor. 👍 The video is really cool. I was in my early teens when it came out. I would listen to it a lot on the radio. I was a theater major in college....never pursued acting but got some work as a model. I wish I would have stuck with it. I miss the 90s so bad. Must have been a great experience for you?!
I actually found myself in the video! It's just the back of my head, but it is me. It took me this long to see it. I was told I could be in it, but thought they lied to me after. Guess they were truthing! Still. Best time of my life. A young teenager up all night meeting bsnd members, joining the crew and mingling. There were a lot of pretty cool people. I remember the snake guy. When I first met him, he pulled that snake out of his pocket. He'd been walking around with it the whole time.
This tune really sends me....The slide guitar parts are like the cherry on top. Makes feel like I am tripping without the L S D... Songs like this that are both mysterious and beautiful really get a hold on ya!!!
Gosh, when you listen to wonderful pieces like this vs. the the rubbish that they allow to get air time is something i can't wrap my head around. And again thank you cowboy junkies, you people kick serious tail. You do fine work.
Jason Chow You are a part of my college days mate! Saw this video on one of them music channels in Bombay, India. Unfortunately the album was not available in cassette or CD format. It sure is a pleasure to say a big HELLO to you!
Jason this was one of the very first videos that showed our original people in such a sensitive light, your performance is no less than brilliant, conveying the emotion of the story without a single word, we all got the somewhat controversial message, but also the other many layers . it remains my favourite piece of northern Canadians, I so relate to the feeling miles from my home, thank you, just thank you
Listening to this song hits hard when leaving your hometown for greener pastures and working aboard. What a fantastic piece from Cowboy Junkies ❤ Greetings from Sabah, Malaysia 🇲🇾
Miles from home Gather up the sea Gather up the soil Take a piece of you and wrap it in a lock of hair Go and Go never slow Breathe as you did before You can What's a place except us? A handful of life should do it Never moving far or closer than this Go and Go miles from our home Smile a secret and know Never miles, never miles from our home I said...
@lanceromance123 One guy is Asian and the other is Native. Since this takes place in Ontario, he's probably speaking Iroquois (Huron/Mohawk)... great video!!!
Saw them do this at a Lillith Fair concert back in Park City, UT back in 1998/99. I've seen them many times, and that is the only time I've seen this one done.
The guitar gliss first heard at 1:03 in this song kind of reminds me of the Nostalgia Critic saying "KEEEEEEEW!!!" from his review of the Disney Afternoon
Is there a connection or homage to the movie My Own Private Idaho, with this video? The initial scene, in particular, seems very like a scene from that movie.
So this was specifically filmed exclusively for the Cowboy Junkies video? I have always wondered what movie this was taken from, and have looked for it. It's a great video; I love a video that tells a story.
Margo, You are blessed with beautiful looks and an amazing voice, coupled with the amazing talent of your brothers. WOW!!!! You guys are my all time favourite canadian band. Do you guys have any plans in the near future for performing in Montreal? My wife and I are huge fans and would love to see you guys live......
Well, this is a better response than I expected hehe, I dont know now but you were very good looking back in 98. How old are you now? What was the language the guy with the longer hair was using and what was he saying? How did you get a part in the video? Have you done any other works? sorry for the overload of questions, Im curious haha
These guys played with us in Chicago at a place called Batteries Not Included around 87 or 88. They didn't seem too excited but I could tell they had something going on. It was my band Wait for Light and the Buck Pets. Think we head lined if you want to call it that. Good times.
Ah right! how silly of me, I thought maybe the two of you were native americans. What did he actually say? Did you retire? Are you in IMDb somewhere? Hope Im not being a bother :P
I don't believe these two are Native American Indian , Asian I would bet the necklace on the driver of the motorcycle that's not Native American that's Jade worn by budist etc. Still excellent song and video.

As a Canadian, this video helped me come to terms with being gay, and it was a gay relationship on Much Music on high rotation.

Such a great song...So much love for the band...35 years of consistently fabulous music.
Her voice can melt rocks - so subtle and powerful
Thank you for this song and giving it to us. This is a gift to the world.
Oh boy...lots of feeling and confusion going on here lol. This reminds me of monday evening 6pm on ch 30 lol
"Sleeping fields sigh as i glide cross their spines." Pure lyrical genius....
I’m finally going to get to see this band in Canterbury, England, in November!
My God. I want the 90's back
Man oh man...What a gem...That slide guitar really adds to the whole floating feel of this song...This is a
great obscure lesser known song.....

@@travislatigue4957 Yup that was me… but a long long long long time ago… lol

Great video! Do you know what language is being spoken at the beginning of the video?
I'd forgotten how special this team of musicians is.
what a song. heard it on the radio today and it made me feel so damn good.

What’s the time stamp of where you are?
I first saw & heard the Cowboy Junkies on the Johnny Carson show & was instantly smitten! Margo Timmons voice is so haunting❤❤❤
home is where the heart is the heart is everywhere
This tune really sends me....The slide guitar parts are like the cherry on top. Makes feel like I am tripping

Such a great video! So good to see diversity!!
Gosh, when you listen to wonderful pieces like this vs. the the rubbish that they allow to get air time is something i can't wrap my head around. And again thank you cowboy junkies, you people kick serious tail. You do fine work.
I just love the cowboy junkies I listed to them in the 90's .
I am the guy with the shorter hair, though that was me many many years ago....lol

This was filmed on my farm, on Reesor Rd.
What about the other guy, I remember him from high-school, he was always carrying a quitar; Peter Leung, I believe ?
Listening to this song hits hard when leaving your hometown for greener pastures and working aboard. What a fantastic piece from Cowboy Junkies ❤
Greetings from Sabah, Malaysia 🇲🇾
This is so CUTE and SO AMAZING!!! It takes me back to grade 7 when I first heard this song on the galaxie pop music station on tv!
The intro is a tribute to Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix in 'My own private Idaho'!!
A beautiful song and a beautiful video. I've loved C.J. for years and here's just one more reason why.
The 90s was the awakening
always loved this song
WOWO SO AMAIZNG SONG I will never forget it takes me back to when I was in grade 7!!

@lanceromance123 One guy is Asian and the other is Native. Since this takes place in Ontario, he's probably speaking Iroquois (Huron/Mohawk)... great video!!!
pure poetic perfection
That was kind of beautiful

Somehow classic just isn't enough. I'm an ancient hippy and heard so many voices through the many decades but few can match Margo.
Orsom Song, Orsom Band, everytime I play this Song on here or on CD it makes me feel happy .. Brilliant !!
There are some ressemblances between this video's intro and the movie My Own Priavte Idaho, I find. But maybe it's just me.
It's not just you.
They rhyme, visually and otherwise.
The motorcycle, the campfire.
There are some resemblances between you and your mother. 😉
LOVE this song!!! It used to play on our Aero CD at work back in the day. Like '99/'00 So many memories!
Great song
What a smooth voice
Saw them do this at a Lillith Fair concert back in Park City, UT back in 1998/99. I've seen them many times, and that is the only time I've seen this one done.
What a great song...
Great sing, great video. Margo Timmons rules.
The guitar gliss first heard at 1:03 in this song kind of reminds me of the Nostalgia Critic saying "KEEEEEEEW!!!" from his review of the Disney Afternoon
oh to be on the road again traveling to see my Mom and Dad .....I sure miss those days

So this was specifically filmed exclusively for the Cowboy Junkies video? I have always wondered what movie this was taken from, and have looked for it. It's a great video; I love a video that tells a story.
The opening seen is inspired by My Own Private Idaho.

This song is So Cool!! It's me!!!
Margo,

Where can we get more info about the actors and production of this video?
@karanseraph deffs. The whole thing is pretty much a happy ending version of Idaho
it was from an off shoot of my own private Idaho

I actually found another live performance of this.from 2008.
I was 16 when this song came out and I listen to it often. So wonderful, bittersweet, and nostalgic.
👍🎸🎤🇨🇦janna harris

Ah right! how silly of me, I thought maybe the two of you were native americans. What did he actually say? Did you retire? Are you in IMDb somewhere? Hope Im not being a bother :P
what's with these new ad's that were made to watch first? I'm hoping this doesn't happen to all videos, otherwise I'm sure I'll boycot it.
Great song!! Check out danish act Inouwee with the song "Liquids playing misty games" if you like this.
is that souix or cantonese or mandirin
ok, my obsession won't leave me, what's the name of the guy with shorter hair? anyone knows?
Whats odd about this is, this video was filmed at my house when I was a teenager. I do not recall the gay native guys...
I find this band ironic af
That's in mono! Please re-upload.
try to understand me v.j.
@wiggitywhacked
It's Native American i believe.
are these guys Asians or Lakota Sioux it sounds Sioux the guy is speaking but he looks Asian..
theyre Gasian American from the Heywudjablowme Tribe
By the way the language sounds native American.
It's a North American Indian dialect/language. Not modern Chinese in any way.
@michaeljustmichael Would it be less awkward if it was a white man and a white woman?
D
I don't believe these two are Native American Indian , Asian I would bet the necklace on the driver of the motorcycle that's not Native American that's Jade worn by budist etc. Still excellent song and video.
WOW was Margo HOT then!
