Right flint is sharp it is a very good idea to wear gloves for your safty & the safty of others. Blood dropping s can be a problem for others & i found red flint there!
Micah Spruth-Janssen yeah I wanted only the absolute best I could find, limited money and she charges by the pound. I was showing what great flint looks like, and not such great flint.
Cool chert/flint, but seriously there are several better ways to accomplish what you are trying to do and all of them require less effort and don't require a transfusion when done. Suggestions, use the sledge like a bopper, and drive the larger preforms from the rock, or knowing flint is a 7 on the mohs you can actually fashion a wedge from it and use it to drive chunks away from host rock. Look around you there are wedges everywhere. Split the rock in slabs using wedges and existing cracks or seams since it's sedimentary there are always seams.
Your lucky man that stuff is just beautiful in itself I'm gonna take a trip up north next year sometime to have a look at the white chert cliffs of antrim ireland.
So basically what your saying is that it isnt worth going if you only take a hammer . I've been thinking of going to one of the flintridge quarries but I'm going to take every tool known to man ,i mean like enough stone working tools to build a pyramid . It would be cool if it was like a novaculite or keokuk quarry with an backhoe running .
there's a gentleman there with a backhoe serval times a year opening up and closing up deposits when he finds good color or quality material... No need for any big for years I've only brought a solid metal chisel.. it really is more of a tapping process and not a whacking process you'll break down the material you have in your hand too fast if you hit it with a hammer too hard... There is plenty of material laying on the ground 4-5 good pits open at all times.
Felix Immler recommended you, & I'm glad he did! Subscribed at 1st viewing. I really want to get started knapping & soon. Any advice for East Tennessee & traveling to find flint/chert? Are they the same? I can identify chert, but not distinguish good from bad, so far. Heard you say to look for shiny pieces. I read about ancients heat treating flint before knapping. Is this fact or fiction? Thanks for all your great work!
David Sain they did heat treat in some areas! I know they heat treated coastal plains chert near middle georgia. Let me look into tennessee chert and see what I can come up with for you. The only “true” flint is really in the UK. Some would argue Texas as well. Most of what we have here in the states is either chert, chalchondy, agate or jasper
Dude where are your gloves!!!!!!!! At least 10 times a year somebody leaves there on their way to the emergency room because they did not take any safety precautions! I am so worried for Mrs Nether as a season starts with how the internet has taken over advertisement of this place. It has only been word of mouth and rock clubs for the last 50 years.. please everyone wear your safety goggles wear thick shoes because I have seen that go through people's tennis shoes absolutely wear your gloves!!! And the tapping method works way better than whacking full strength..you'll just shatter it! Happy safe hounding everyone!
JULIE FULTZ I left with a flat tire too. Bunch of shards in my shoes. This was my first experience quarrying there. The flint I’m used to is much much tougher than this stuff. Really have to whack the stuff I use. I have gloves and goggles now.
Hmmm ... I feel like you need a face shield and a denim long sleeve shirt when you quarrying chert. Looks like a pick and a heavier sledge might not be a bad idea either.
Daniel salcedo Here is the knife I made from that quarry flint! I have a few left up for sale, people buying me out for Christmas gifts. etsy.me/2Parbpr
Freeze cracking is not a matter of age it is matter of proximity to the surface freeze line. In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter. Just saying...
Good looking flint great video Gene Gorringe Mi 💙✌️🇺🇲🇬🇧
Ive got to get there. Ive read an seen so many post on fb, now seeing this video I can't think of a better day.
Go. It’s amazing

Interesting stuff!
The Wooded Beardsman thought you would like this one.
Man what you consider not good quality is better than most of what I try to work with...

Wish we had a spot like that !!
Where you located again?
Interesting videos on this and Flint Ridge Park
mckuhn1000 glad you enjoyed!
The prices have gone up slightly since this video was made
:(
You may not want that frost damaged chert, but I'd love to get my hands on a bunch of it. I may be cool to tumble or slab a bunch of it.
You have an archaeologist in your family? Your last name is familiar.
it all changes color once you heat it. The stone i quarried from there i put in a turkey roaster and all of it turned from light creams to dark reds.
HillbillysNdaBush I will have to try that next time I collect from there.
The stuff I normally work has no benefit from cooking. It’s a shale-chert
Try Coshocton county flint.
Would love to try to find that stuff
heat treatment is the way to go with flint ridge

Jason percy I got more than enough with just the hammer. Didn’t film it all.

I have chert everywhere in my country. Whenever I see people pick it up in videos I’m like, “what are you doing? That’s just chert!”
Share the wealth! lol
Vision Quest Outdoors you mean like make videos or send them to people?

TheVodec I went in unprepared lol. Yeah. Bigger hammer, chisel.
I also feel okay with giving a blood sacrifice for collecting the stone lol
I want to do this so bad

@@Wildernessquestoutdoors Oh no. How did you find it? Like to go this weekend
Oops.
I did find it. Picked a couple buckets full. Very nice lady. Talked to her for a while.
Tim Henry did she show you the giant slab spear?
