  • Played on a REAL Commodore 64 with the 6581 SID chip (R2-0384)
The program's name is "Swinth" supposedly by Georg Feil.
    Songs:
    (#1) 0:00
    TITLE: Stationary Ark
    ARTIST: John Mills-Cockell
COMMENT: "Theme from Stationary Ark, a nature show on PBS. [...] It appears on
Synth Sample as interpreted by a friend of mine. I didn't know what it was myself until I happened to see Stationary Ark one time. This song does not play properly on some C-64's where the SID chip filter is calibrated differently." (GF)
    (#2) 5:03
    TITLE: Saturdays in Silezia
    ARTIST: Rational Youth
COMMENT: "A fluffy pop song I taped off the radio. Seemed simple enough to render on the C-64." (GF)
Also used in the game Shocker.
    (#3) 8:29
    TITLE: Spiral [from Spiral]
    ARTIST: Vangelis
    (#4) 9:36
TITLE: Tubular Bells, Part 1 [from Tubular Bells]
    ARTIST: Mike Oldfield
    COMMENT: A little free-hand adaptation.
"I just thought this was ultra cool. Used as the music to The Exorcist, unfortunately." (GF)
    (#5) 12:09
    TITLE: Magic Shadows, closing theme
    ARTIST: Harry Forbes
COMMENT: "Magic Shadows was a half-hour movie show on TV Ontario, sort of the Canadian equivalent of PBS. They'd show old movies in half-hour installments. I have no idea if there's an album. I taped it off the TV." (GF)
    (#6) 12:38
TITLE: Funeral Music for Queen Mary
    ARTIST: Henry Purcell
    (#7) 14:07
    TITLE: Oxygene 2 [from Oxygene]
    ARTIST: Jean Michel Jarre
    (#8) 17:27
    TITLE: Canon in D major
    ARTIST: Johann Pachelbel
COMMENT: "This is a very popular classical hit. I transcribed the notes from a Transactor or Compute! article (this is the only Synth Sample piece not transcribed by ear)." (GF)
    (#9) 18:38
    TITLE: Enola Gay [from Organisation]
ARTIST: Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD)"

Probably first played this around 1985ish on a C64 when I was a child. These notes are so deeply wired into my mind, I think it gave me a lifelong love of electronic music. Really a magical thing, no one could appreciate today if you didn’t experience it back then

Agreed. track 4 is epic. i had it in my head for decades and never actually knew the name of the composition. I only remember playing it over and again as a child on c64. Really nice to hear it again.

@@vodkawhisperer3923 I expect that you don''t even understand "boomer" is, or when they were born. Most "boomers" were born shortly after WWII . Making them properly 70 years of age or older. If you are the "bane of boomers" then you really ought to be looking for them in old folks homes and not online. If your saying "OK boomer" to people on any modern social media platform, your missing the mark horribly. Your just wrong and your rhetoric is illustrative of your ignorance. I'd pick a new username, as it stands you appear have animosity toward people who are generally living there last years on this planet. Most of whom don't have a lot of use for youtube, twitch or any of the places where you like to parrot the phrase "ok boomer" Just makes you look like an uneducated example of your generation to those of us who understand the correct definition of the "boomer" generation.

Me and a friend who both had C64s (when everyone else had Spectrums) we went round to a slightly older kid who was REALLY into C64s and had all these demos, we sat around in his bedroom listening to this. Blown away by Saturdays in Silesia.

Back in the day whenever I had trouble sleeping I would put on Synth Sample and fall asleep to it. Love it to this day.
Still amazed what a SID could do in the hands of people who knew how to make it sing.

I used to play this during AD&D game sessions with friends, the tv monitor set on low for ambient sound. I used to write notes on my paper when to play what song. Here was the breakdown of what I used for each:
0:00 Night time travel, or ocean travel. I favored this one when actually working on the campaign.
5:03 Random encounters, monsters, general combat. My group knew something monstrous was on it's way with this one.
8:29 Boss Fight, dragons, larger wars. Had a red dragon combat encounter with this one that nailed it when he finally was slain.
9:36 vampire dungeon, haunted places, generally undead. Also had this song on a Pure Moods CD in the 90s.
12:09 Noble's castle, wealthy towns, visits with kings or queens, etc. Ironically, the political subterfuge didn't match this song, but it was okay.
But because it was so short, I tended to use other songs instead.
12:38 Villages, smaller towns, and hamlets. Also country roads and peaceful forests. Song always reminded me of JRPGs from the 90s later on.
14:07 Usually the last battle with a campaign's main villain. I rarely used this one except for that. When this song played, everyone knew it was ON!
17:27 Wizards tower, castle courtyard, elvish town. One of the elven magic-users in our game would ask for this song when they'd talk about home.
18:38 overland travel, often when going from A to B. Probably the most common ambience in those games.
The music was only background, and the visuals weren't really on display, but I had my set-up read to key the musical cues, and overtime my group realized what was coming just from the music alone. Thanks for the uploader, I freaking love this nostalgia! Good times!

Just as I remembered Swinth. This is a longshot, but did anyone use Q-Link? That's how I downloaded tons of c64 music and graphics plus demos. I pirated most of the games. But bought Blue Max game on cassette. Later I got a Commodore 128, and made a music program of my own (in 64 mode, of course). Memories...like tears in rain...

I was a Q-link nut, even had a prog to hack the cert codes(it played fade to black by metallica) when hacking codes.
Qlink was a great time back in the day.

These vintage chip tunes covers are astounding in their perfection. Just 3-4 voices to work with! This version of "Tubular Bells" is still the best one I've ever heard! This was where I heard "Enola Gay" for the first time as a kid ... I actually learned to play "Funeral For Queen Mary" and recorded my own version. I forgot this is also where I heard that first. I would have told you later on it was "The Clockwork Orange" soundtrack. Ditto Pchabel's Cannon in D, and an incredibly tidy and sprightly version indeed!

@@MrCaliforniaD Apparently, there's a glitch that allows a fourth voice to play sampled drums or speech but I don't know how many "productions" made use of it ...

I had lots of C64, 128 and Amiga computers and lots of peripherals. Thanks for sharing. I used to listen to it every night endelssly.

I remember my friend and me would play this thing, and be completely transported, as if through some time machine, to some other place. And this was some product running on some 8-bit computer. And we were gone, we were somewhere else. How did these people make this thing?
