    Hey guys,
    I’m posting this to clear the air on a couple things. Recently, I collaborated with a very talented dancer by the name of Kristy Sellars to create the Alice In Wonderland dance on her youtube channel. This is a project that we have been working on TOGETHER for months. After she uploaded her performance to youtube, both her and I have been receiving comments from people who think that she stole my work and is trying to take credit for herself. This is NOT the case. With my permission, I licensed out my visuals to her, and created some new animations to be adapted for her pole dance. Two years ago I originally developed this dance with Andrea Taylor, a dance teacher at my alma mater high school. She is the original choreographer and came up with the concept for the piece. We had no idea how much it would blow up when I uploaded it to my channel, giving me opportunities to work with people from all over the world (to which I am extremely grateful).
    I appreciate the concern from viewers who are trying to defend me and ensure I get proper credit, as all artists should. Andrea Taylor and I are both credited in the video description for our respective roles. Working with professional dancers is new to me, and I'm learning as I go. This will be a lesson to learn from, and going forward we will make sure that the credits for these dances are clear. Thanks for your understanding.
    -Ryan

      It's his work - surely he is entitled to use it again. Just the same as a choreographer using the same combo or sequence in a routine. We can't all be 100% original, 100% of the time

What do you think is the simplest and fastest editing program (s) for interactive projection mapping? Do you have any hints, tips and tricks that would help a beginner? I have worked in film editing and lighting so I am some what familiar with the process. Thank you thank you thank you!

    Hi Ryan,
    Wonderful and ambitious project, which you have collaborated ! Symbiosis between choregraphy, music, texts, lights, special effects… realy amazing.
    One question : your animations (dancer, cat, moving shapes…) were they "premixed" with the background video movie, before the show ? or the both together projected, simultaneously, on the background screen during the presentation ? Anyway... Brillant ! Thanks.

      Kristy Sellars no offence I LOVED your performance! I was just a little bit bewildered that everybody thought it was completely new whereas the concept and the idea of the whole Alice theme isn't. Fair enough it is a great adaption to pole dance!!

    • @KristySellars
      @KristySellars 7 років тому +1

      +elphe elfenwald absolutely agree, it spread much faster than Ryan and I could have imagined and we both would have done a couple of things differently had we known! But everyone is credited in the descriptions and although the concept was already created, we both worked extremely hard to create around 50% of the visuals that you see in my performance from scratch. As well as 90% of the choreography itself is all new as well.

    Where did you find you definition of interactivity ? For you mean, this means that's it's interactive because it's live and there is no post-production effects ... but this is wrong !
    Your show is pretty cool and the images are great ... but this is just a dance show with video ... that's all.
    Interactive video means that the dancer is free of his/her mouvements, because the video is following him/her ... and not the contrary. To do this, you need a live camera, like a kinect, and create interactive video programm, to make the video changing according to the dancer's mouvement

    • @ryantalbot_art
      @ryantalbot_art  7 років тому +5

      You're right, the whole thing is planned out and created ahead of time, much like a movie has a script. However, each part would not work without the other, and the things that happen on-screen are affected by the choreography which is specific to this dance. So, it is interactive in the sense that the visuals are dictated by the dancing. If there was a generic animation that did not move according the dancer and it could be performed without it, that would be my definition of "non-interactive". Of course not every second of the visuals are interactive, but a good portion of it is.

    Ryan, this is very impressive. That said, may I make a general comment about design in theatre? What you and the Dance Teacher have created is essentially a multi-media work. Now, I know this kind of artistic work is not new to theatre stages or art galleries. However, as something of a purist I believe stage performers deserve better than being "subsumed" by attention grabbing digital technology (and even overly elaborate sets). The theatre stage and its inhabitants are reliant on scale; whereas film is in a sense scaleless.
    I have no issue with film or video using abstract time space or dimension devices, as this media is essentially "plastic", and well placed to focus on a filmmaker's creative achievements. On the other hand I believe little is gained by swamping stage performers with technology that diminishes their human scale. If one is a digital artist and wishes to be autonomous, my suggestion would be to restrain from theatre work; remain in film, and allow theatre performers to take centre stage. I apologise if I sound too harsh.

    • @PaulaStreet
      @PaulaStreet 8 років тому

      +Peter Solomon part of the intended effect was to show Alice as tiny compared to the digital fantasy imagery (as per the original Lewis Carroll story, where she shrinks etc....) so in that way the combination of effects and live dance did seem appropriate, and the way she was 'swamped' actually a reflection of the psychological theme of the work.

    • @ryanx5582
      @ryanx5582 8 років тому

      +Peter Solomon There is no need to belittle this kind of work with your preference for the presence of light to not be grandiose. I feel part of the point here was to diminish the human scale. Maybe you would like another story, where the same multi-media can be done more minimally, or used to enhance the human presence.

    • @petersolomon8894
      @petersolomon8894 8 років тому

      +Ryan X I will say this much, projected media in theatre is not be new, but it has gained wide use today as projectors and contemporary lights are now capable of "filling" large spaces with dense colour. There are also practical reasons for using projections: designing a stage set with coloured light is simply less expensive than designing a set with custom built scenery.
      Intellectually I accept what you and Paula Street say about the psychological aspects of Carroll's story. Equally, philosophically I believe that flooding a performer with over-scaled light (or practical scenery) draws attention to the work of the designer, not the performer. Whether the event is the Eurovision Song Contest, Rock Concerts, Modern Dance or Pro-Am Theatre, when you have scenery that out scales human form, performers are secondary to anything else.
      On a more general level, the limitation of theatre is that you cannot balance lavishly designed, overwhelming "wide shots" with a "intimate medium close ups", as film can. But then, theatre is not meant to be film, is it?

    • @xodz
      @xodz 8 років тому
