Alice In Wonderland- The Cheshire Cat

- This is a part of Alice In Wonderland with the Cheshire Cat. I love Alice In Wonderland, even if it was written by a guy who was on opium. I especially love the Cheshire Cat and his grin!!!!!!!!!!!!! This clip is from Disney's version, so I do not own it or anything.

The fact that this dream is coming entirely from Alice's own mind signifies that Alice is a little mad herself.
Of course he did
redDL89 Its a bit strange it sure gives the impression of a dream but then you ask was it really?
That part of this movie that freaked/still freaks my out, is the scene where Alice SEES HERSELF SLEEPING. How though?
@@alittleimagination9023 Imagine if Alice saw herself wake up suddenly, look straight at her, and walk toward her extremely quickly, her eyes directly looking at her, her mouth in a cold, sneering grin, etc.
Mommy!!! (Cover eyes/run away...) 👹
@@BenjaminGessel freaky
Scared me as a child,so uncanny and mysterious, felt like he was a god of some sort messing with alice
He practically has the powers of a god but, acts like almost anyone else in wonderland
@@TheFaustianAlchemist casually terrifying 😂
@@DeusVult12_ that's what makes him such a great character, he causes trouble for Alice and annoys her but, still he cheers her on and roots for her
This whole film is kinda creepy 😂
This is the exact feelings and thoughts I had as a kid. I'm not the only one.
The Chesire Cat stands out among all other wonderland inhabitants because he seems to be more aware of things than anyone else. He is the only ones who knows and aknowledges that everyone there is mad including himself, and he is the only one who seems to comprehend Alice's situation and actually have conversations about her situation (first her trying to find the rabbit and then her trying to get home) as opposed to just obsessing over his own affairs (like for instance how the Mad Hatter and March Hare only obsess over their tea party and barely aknowledges whatever Alice is saying). This makes Chesire stand out as someone who seems to exist slightly "beyond" wonderland, someone who may very well be aware of the existance of the real world. This makes him an interesting arura because he almost comes of as some sort of higher being, at least compared to the oblivious fools that surround him. Take this and couple it with the fact that he is the only wonderland inhabitant who seems to be able to break every law of physics at will. If the Mad Hatter, Caterpillar, Queen of Hearts ect are the PEOPLE of wonderland, then the Cat could perhapes be it's deity. Maybe not fully a deity, but something almong those lines.
You make a good point, besides the twins, he seems to be the most interested in what Alice is trying to do even if he’s just toying with her
Alice was experiencing a dream, her own imagination. I think you are looking slightly too deep into this.
This is a great insight and analysis. Literature and movies often have deeper meanings. It was a big reason why I studied literature in college. Thank you for this.
@@SexuallyRepressedMegalodon Actually I have a masters degree. Im a historian. I did get my degree at a state university though. Here in Sweden nearly everyone who goes into higher education goes to a state university as opposed to a private one. So you got one out of two right.
Kinda reminds me of Tom bombadil
In the book, it goes slightly deeper. Not only does he say everyone in Wonderland is mad, he tells Alice that she too is mad. She denies this, at first. But ultimately asked how he knows she is mad, to which he replies, "You must be. If you weren't, you wouldn't be here."
Puts a few things into perspective, actually. Wonderland is a place made from Alice's cognition, which means it all comes from her head. So in theory, the madness of Wonderland is the madness of Alice.
Sometimes, I think about how fun it would be to see a version of Alice who embraces her madness and just has fun in Wonderland like the Chesire Cat.
I played him in a play and had to tell Alice she’s mad cuz 😎 srsly tho I love Cheshire sm
Maybe the Cat personifies her acceptance of her potential madness and deviance. Like, the Cat’s her self-consciousness.
The book's take is also fascinating in that it explicitly does the fading as alice says it's rude to just appear like that. It also causes a stir at the end of the film.
There's Alice madness returns
So what? She a crazy killer or something in the book?
"You can't help that. Most everyone is mad here."
If that's not the best description of life, I don't know what is.
OMG another Mandela effect, the cat has always said "We're all mad here" there are countless tattoos and images with that saying and the cat!
@@E4EonEbay I think it's from the American McGee's Alice video game and the sequel Madness Returns.
@@E4EonEbay damn you beat me to it I was just going to tell him that
The “we’re all mad here” is from the book
“‘But I don’t want to go among mad people,’ Alice remarked.
‘Oh, you can’t help that,’ said the Cat: ‘we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.’
‘How do you know I’m mad?’ said Alice.
‘You must be,’ said the Cat, ‘or you wouldn’t have come here.’” (Carroll 50)

I love that the Cheshire Cat is reciting the Jabberwocky poem as he fades in
That’s a nice detail I honestly didn’t know when I first saw this as a teenager. That’s like how they turned bit of the walrus and the carpenter poem into their song.
It was used because the jabberwocky wasn’t used in the final movie, so they wanted to include the iconic poem somewhere. They chose to get rid of, “I’m Odd” and chose the jabberwocky poem… I think it’s a lot more fitting than I’m Odd.
It's kind of ironic for me, since I'm in a school production of Alice And Wonderland And Back Again. The Jabberwocky poem is a big deal, but I'm the ONLY one there who can both pronounce it and understand it, and I AM the Cheshire Cat.
Also to the tune of Alice's song
That was my favourite poem as a kid ☺️
I like the cat's voice, he's mysterious and he seems fun to hang out with xD
That's Sterling Holloway, he also played Kaa (Jungle Book[1967]), Winnie the Pooh(till 1972), and Bert Miller (The Andy Griffith Show[1960-1968]), as well as a few other movies(most of which were Disney's)

Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”
He took his vorpal sword in hand;
Long time the manxome foe he sought-
So rested he by the Tumtum tree
And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.

MAN! The sound design, the orchestral music, the classy way everyone speaks in a nonsensical world, Kathryn Beaumont’s voice, all of it tickle’s my brain
I watched this animation even before I entered elementary school, and I saw a character that I didn't know whether it was good or evil for the first time, so I was very confused and scared
he's a guiding spirit, he is not good nor bad he just led to Alice awakening from her dream
Well kids generally put good and evil in a separate box. So as a child I was generally confused and creeped out by the Cheshire cat.
I used to wish Alice would stay with the Cheshire Cat. He's the only one who gave me any real comfort while watching the movie when I was a child
He also nearly had her executed.
@@vetarlittorf1807 I think he meant to get her into trouble so she would go back home.
@@dinodisneylover1 I don't think so. The Cheshire Cat is a chaotic figure and does things simply because he can. In fact, he probably led her to the Queen of Hearts in the first place because he wanted Alice dead.

Just in love with this old style of animation. The way Alice is animated is perfect.
I can’t help but at least chuckle at 1:59, he honestly looks so high and it’s obvious he is screwing with Alice but it makes it so funny
I’ve always loved the Cheshire Cat for his mysterious appearance and act, I love his unpredictable and mischievous characteristics. I like how he’s always smiling and looking friendly, it always made me feel comfortable watching the movie as a kid. This is one of my favorite movies of all time and I do wish to know the meaning of all of it, but who doesn’t love a good mystery?
Same here, I was really surprised when I found out some people were actually scared of him when they were little. If you ask me, he only truly looks even remotely unsettling the one time he’s *not* smiling. Otherwise, he’s just so cheery and friendly (and at least he actually lets Alice talk and gives her _some_ direction, even if it wasn’t very helpful) that I can’t help loving him. And even as a kid, I did in fact realize that he was probably being deliberately unhelpful in the Queen’s garden and at the trial, but like. I could never hate him. I’ve never even considered him a villain like some people apparently do. Maybe that’s just the cat lover in me, tho.
I’m also a big fan of purple and cool animation effects, so that probably helped. 🩷💜
I saw a comment by someone who stated that they were unnerved by the Cheshire Cat at first, because they weren't sure if he was good or evil. Personally, I don't think the Cheshire Cat is a character who can be placed completely in either category. I think the best way to describe him is a mischievous spirit that has his own rules of logic and either messes with people or provides advice based on his personal preference.
Chaotic neutral
The part where he disappears, laughs and sings truly got me terrified and gave me some nightmares, but I know he's not a bad guy. The Cheshire Cat has become one of my favorite characters in the movies and the novels over the years.

The Cheshire Cat is my favorite from this film. I know he's a mysterious character, and with a mischievous smile on his face all the time. Though he's kinda funny, and said some wise words to Alice about it depending on where you wanna get to. I've recently watched the movie, and I think it's great. I have no idea why the Cheshire Cat is considered a Disney villain. He’s really more like Discord from MLP in that he likes to cause chaos and intentionally misinterpret and twist words and meanings around just because he can and just for fun (and Discord does so even after his redemption arc), but at the same time he’s the only inhabitant of Wonderland who’s actually self-aware and has intelligent, meaningful conversations with Alice.
