I am floored by this spirituality. My friend James went to the desert for six years: this man has an otherworldly perception of life, one unlike anyone I have ever seen and he lives the gospel. If one feels the call to the desert, make sure your "house is in order first" and go! From all the testimony I have heard including this beautiful film, this is the life closest to heaven one can get here!
FIRST LOVE...is ALL we're made to want and to desire, but worldly pleasures and material gain will blind us to the True Lover of our souls, if we let those things crowd out the "still small Voice." This is exquisite. Brilliant and beautiful. Thank you.
I am Christian Orthodox and I really see the spirit in this religion. Your documentary was to short but it was beautiful. I see what Father Lazarus was talking about and wish I can experience it. Living in the hustle and bustle of civilization and all its calamities does take away from the connection with Christ and God.
I am a Buddhist, but I still find this to be a beautiful film and Fr. Lazarus to be a holy man. There is more in common between our faiths than many people realize. Thank you for posting this example of true spirituality on UA-cam to further inspire others to take up a spiritual practice.
Always come back to this brother. He kind of touches a truth, rolls it over, then stops it. And I thank Father Lazurus for that. I remember visiting Wadi Natrun with my sisters 10 years ago, and we too were alone and strangers from another land, stopping on dusty roads to eat, and arrived there, not knowing it was Easter.
Very, Very inspiring. To give and put everything I have in the hands of The Heavenly and Eternal Father and remain with Him and His son, Jesus Christ and all of Heaven, whilst living in the city and keeping fore front, in mind, humility, patience, charitiy, lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity, et al. Thanks for posting.
I carried many crosses in my career life. Thinking now of one of Fr Lazarus sermons on CYC. Each of us have our own crosses to carry, the struggles and frustrations of life like relationships and family, career etc.
Thank you for the video. Father Lazarus is an inspiration beyond measure. I would like to know if you have any recent videos or information on Father Lazarus.God Bless you!
this an amazing video! thank you for sharing! i am currently reading the book by james cowan - i read the first chapter and i just fell in love with the book - i could not even put it down. God is so great. thanks for sharing this great video! -Mariam - Ontario, Canada
@CALLINGALLTOLOVE Coptic orthodox is spreading in the whole of africa . With limited budget , we have coptic missions taking out in africa promoting our faith in orthodox to the people of africa. May God Bless those people , and may God make every mission succesful . We hope that it'll spread like flowers spreading over the desert :) May Jesus Bless Us all :) ALL! amen!
Yes, Father Lazarus ! love of the Creator as # 1 , I can understand that , may Bliss ( Contemplation) fill your , heart , soul / nous now and always ......
I love this film. Please let us know how Father Lazarus is doing today. God has gifted him in so many ways and he in turn is utilizing those gifts with prayer & love.
If God calls you to a life of prayer in the desert then you go and pray in the desert. If God calls you to raise a family in New York... then raise a family in New York. Just because someone becomes a monk doesn't mean they are running from the world. Do you realize how much time could be spent with the Lord out there? You would be so filled with the spirit... what a wonderful thought. Everyone's walk is different....
Monaghan3000 He said that he went away from temptation, While Jesus went 40 days to be in prayer and to defet temptation, but after that period Our Lord came back to change the world.
jorgecarrillo2 Father Lazarus also said he was tempted by demons during his prayers, until he rebuked them. The temptation of Satan is all throughout this world, but i would say that living such an ascetic lifestyle is a defeat of temptation by itself.
Temptation to distraction, not just to engage in habitual sin. He was seeking a different kind of life. Further, he wasn't seeking it for himself. That man prays for you everyday. It's the same concept of cloistered nuns, or silent Trappists. The purpose is to devote oneself wholly to prayer for the sake of the Church and humanity, and it has other benefits of holiness. That mode of life wouldn't be appropriate for people with other vocations, such as parents, or diocesan priests... and the Church teaches as much.
I am not judging him I am glad to know he have found such amazing vocation, however I find also necessary to point that in a world starving for more priests to sanctify the World, to spread the Gospel, How convenient is it to move to the deserted mountains where very few spiritually starving people live?
Is there anyone here from Egypt that can offer me pointers on how to visit St. Anthony's Monastery from Cairo? Are there regular buses that depart from Cairo to the monastery?
Many comments about Father Lazarus not being the last anchorite. Remember it is not a title he gave himself but is merely the title of the documentary.
@srpskiheroi I find Fr Lazarus a very enlightening man. Could language please be moderated on this site. If we think somebody else is wrong then by all means say so. But swearing is not a good advertisement for our faith and will likely put people off it. Please consider this.
Just say the words in your paryer on and on without end, "Κύριε Ιησού Ελέησον με". (kirie Hisou heleison me...) which means in Greek, " Lord Jesus please mercy on me ". This prayer has been proved as the only real. And the integrated version of this prayer and most effective is (which Holy Mount reccoments), "Lord Jesus Crist, Son of God, please mercy on me, the sinner, Holy Mary help me please"
Jan Hough Mr Hough, It wasn't Jesus' intention for us to separate from or unite ourselves to a certain society (humanity as you said). He taught us how to be sons (and daughters) of God and sons of Light. When monks leave their civilian lives and go join the monastic life, it's not for selfish or cowardly reasons. They are not looking to escape from the world but rather get to spend as much time with God as they can. I would like to just bring to mind the story of Martha and Mary, Luke 10:38-42. Both sisters were good women, but in verses 41-42, Jesus says "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” These monks choose the challenging and harsh desert life to spend all their time with God. As for where do they get their income from, that's rather very simple. God ALWAYS provides for his children. Individually, they don't have any money. Money only goes to the monastery for food costs and costs of maintaining the monastery. They also make things by hand to be sold to provide for the monastery. People also donate, both money and food. And a small number of them periodically leaves the monastery to go to the market, and that's all.
Psalm 150, for Great Lent. Jesus Christ Fasted for us... 40 days and 40 nights... Praise Him for His mighty Acts... Alleluia Alleluia ... Jesus Christ Fasted for us.... 40 days and 40 nights.. etc (That's what it's saying in Coptic).
The real desert in internal. The scorpion and snake of memory and distractions are as lethal to the spiritual journey as any found in life. Yet the cross is the bridge to life. I have more crosses in the suburbs than the wilderness. Christ is inseparable from His cross. I must find Him in my work, my partner, my children, my neighbour, my boss, the person who cut me off on the road, the criminal, the priest, within. All shield the Hidden One. I must find Him here or nowhere.
No it doesn't, if one can utilize certain minimal things for the service of God then its acceptable. A tractor may help them to cultivate the land more easy to give them more time for practice, certain basic things can be used if it doesnt distract one from his devotion to God. But it has to be regulated, so many times people expect ascetics to just live on a cold floor in a cave eating only nettle soup to be considered spiritual. A knife in the right hands can be used for so much good.
Wait a second... a tractor? (@7:56) Doesn't this go against the idea of getting away from the things of the world? What guidelines do monks use to determine what is acceptable / worldly? Where do monks go to get their reading glasses and medical treatment? I'm not criticizing, just trying to understand where lines are draw with regards to the things of the world as distractions and coming between the monk and his spiritual path to Jesus / God.
I am an anchorite, perhaps more profound than even Father Lazarus. I remain indoors almost all the time, in solitude, writing, watching videos of praise and prayer, all kinds of music, all for God and His people. You would be surprised at what I watch; but it is the only prayer I can do without the neighbors complaining and calling the police. I go for hours in almost absolute silence, hardly paying attention to the people around me. I am the spouse of I AM THAT AM, with no worries.
No, Father Lazarus, you are not the last anchorite. There will always be anchorites, hermits and solitaries. I am one; I have been tempted, teased, brainwashed, mentally and physically tortured, even by other Catholics. My wilderness, Trenton, NJ, is a frightful one indeed, the same horrid nightmare day and night. But that is alright, because I am more virtuous because of it. I have decided to be Anglican, because it is far away and I can be free in it; and it has a history of anchorites.
wise words. i mean... come on! i everyone just took off and hide in a desert, how would we live? where would we get homes, clothes, food, medicines, and so on... Jesus told us to take our cross and follow him. to TAKE it, not to run from it. better do sth worthwhile with your life, help someone, make someone's life better, than run and hide from the world
Very courageous living - and one cannot help admiring it at one level, but walking in front of traffic dodging cars is also courageous. Bur should one admire it?? Surely it was not Jesus' intention for us to separate ourselves from humanity - it seems to be a very selfish goal that the monks are aiming for. BTW, where do they get income from? They have to have a relationship with society at some level. Why only have a truncated relationship with other humans and lose you family and friends?
Do you feel important, using religion to make yourself better and wiser instead of fortunate your life was spared? Your Hate for groups of people will send you straight to hell as you do not truly understand or listen Christ and keep his commandments to love others. Read his parables in easy to understand Bibles. I hope you change and know Christ as the savior who never taught us to hate strangers and neighbors in His name.
Do not believe these teachings of men created by men and not from the mouth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Christ did not preach holy stillness and isolation from humanity or family, he preached grace through faith from God. He preached reaching out to the hurting and lost with the message of Good news of the Gospel of Christ. He preached the forgiveness of sins when one repents. There is only one way to God, that is through Jesus Christ. "I am the way, the truth, and the life."
I am floored by this spirituality. My friend James went to the desert for six years: this man has an otherworldly perception of life, one unlike anyone I have ever seen and he lives the gospel. it is so important to absorb the message in this film. It really puts our lives into the correct perspective. Very inspiring indeed and enlightening.

Is it better to flee than to defeat the temptation?

Fr Lazarus has a different cowl than any other I've seen with the multicolor crosses. Why is that?
I am at peace
Does he attend the Eucharist?
Marko Ivančičević Yes he prays a Divine Liturgy everyday at Midnight in the cave of the great St Antony

If you think that it is selfish and Jesus did not approve of a man losing everything for God's Love, you might want to check the Bible.
