- A hotel is a place where you can relax while traveling, let your guard down, and just enjoy your privacy … or is it? You might not be as safe and alone as you think and you’d better be on the lookout for hidden cameras.
Even though security companies promise that most Americans have nothing to worry about since the risk is quite low, you still have to be prepared for anything. You might think that these kinds of things only happen to other people in places far away, but that would naïve on your part. I’m sure the individuals whose stories we’ve talked about today also would’ve never expected something so traumatizing to happen to them. But in the blink of an eye, they were robbed of their privacy and sense of security.

-The first spying victim was a 23-year-old woman who booked a room in the Oxford Wheatley Travelodge in 2015 and found a hidden camera. In 2016 a Pennsylvania woman found a camera in the bathroom of the hotel room she’d been staying in with her 11-year-old daughter. There have been several headline-making cases concerning similar privacy issues in the past, the most well-known of which involved Fox sportscaster Erin Andrews.
-The best things you can do is look for lens reflections. Large cameras are easy to spot, so it’s the small ones you’ve gotta beware of. They can be slipped behind furniture, in decorations or vents, and anywhere else you’ll have trouble noticing. There are even special cameras that can be hidden in everyday objects like alarm clocks, smoke detectors, or picture frames.
-Given the cases we’ve seen today, definitely check the vents along with any other holes and gaps in the walls or ceiling. If you're seriously concerned about your privacy, you can get something called an RF detector.
-You have every right to call the police. You have direct evidence of privacy violation in this place, and this crime needs to be reported.

Me and my family went on holiday.We where the second floor up ;and keep in mind that I was 11, and has a room connected to the rest of our family’s through a door.I left something in the room and when I got there noticed there was a hole in the wall from next door on the right (My family where I the left) . I noticed a bright light through the other side so naturally I stuck this stick through it. I heard a muffled yell then I screamed for help really loudly. The people across from us came running out I looked at them and pointed at the door. I then told them somebody had been looking in the room through a hole in the wall. Tue police where called and we found another main in the gap she said there was a mini passageway to the other room.Turns out they planned to kidnap me or if I wasn’t there rob the room.
I previously worked in hotels and the only CCTV was the main reception, bar area, dinning area, reer and communal areas, (parking area... ect). The rooms was the their own private quarters. In fact the cameras was use to monitor staff, (from stealing). That not saying that it doesn't occur within bigger corporation. It's every hotelier nightmare the state of the rooms on departure. Sometime that could be case for liability. People do odd things in there!! You'd be supriced, but you only have a short time to get that room ready for the nexts client and sometimes they've trashed it. It may give some light to them hiding camera's. The bigger sectors could survive a liable law suite, smaller groups proberly would be more choosy on reception.
These videos make me realize how dangerous it is in America. I used to only think it happened only in other country's but these videos prove me wrong.

After watching something last week, I’ve been keeping small pieces of blue painters tape over the camera lens on my phone and tablet. It was a UA-cam video about people hacking into electronics and live streaming what the cameras on the devices record as allegedly the cameras are recording at all times, even if inactive. There are then these websites were one can go to see these live streams that invade people’s privacy.

BZZZZ: Smashing it makes no sense though. Play it cool, and inform the property manager and the police, and keep the camera intact. It's evidence, and there might also might be finger prints on it. Also, there might be some way for the authorities to trace back where the video signal is going to. If you are renting from a private individual, then obviously do not inform the owner you located a camera in the house/condo/apartment, until you have first informed the police, since the person you rented the place from might be the culprit.

Well I never heard of hidden cameras in bathrooms and now I do! Thanks for showing me how to find hotel rooms!
Two things that are taught in certain lines of employment, no not prostitution come on, for you to do in your hotel room to protect your privacy in very low tech ways. Your hotel room has a peep hole in the door. There are peep hole reversers that people can get that will allow them to look through the peep hole and the image is normal to them. I always take the do not disturb sign and place it to block the peep hole. I carry a roll of scotch tape in case I need to tape it. The next thing is placing a full sized bath towel into the gap between the floor and the bottom of the door. This does two things, first it prevents a snake style camera from being fished under the door or a mirror from being used to view under the door. Use two if you need to. Second thing it does is in the event of a fire in the hallway, accidental or intentional, it blocks the smoke from entering the room. You can use the alternate escape route if needed, etc. These towels also work in the event someone wants to force their way into the room, the door will get bound up in the towel rolls and stall their entry or give you a chance to resist back and get the door secured. Some people travel with highly restricted materials, credentials, equipment, etc. and these are steps to take that are very low key and easy to deploy in every single room you stay in.

Peters we have reversible peep holes in our compound retirement village, in Texas, we keep a band aid over out peep hole and warn others to do the same...not trusting matinance people to just put in another of the same...but can complain to special services about it l...but bandaid serves well until then...

I haven't done much traveling, but I'd probably choose the hotel. Though, to be honest, if I had a problem like that, I'd probably try my hand at a little Holmes-style investigating first. I wouldn't be able to admit something like that very easily, if it was in the bathroom. Also, thanks for sharing this!

Putting your fingertip against any mirror, as if pointing straight through the mirror, can reveal if it is a two-way mirror or not. The saying goes "No space, leave this place!". If there isn't a space between your actual fingertip and the reflection then it could absolutely be a two-way mirror.

I feel so sorry about the woman that was posted on the internet without clothes and without her knowing. Nor the 55million dollars would take her shame away but even if you take the life away from that person that did this to her, her shame would not go away and l feel disgusted by people who do such things and break peoples privacy. To protect yourself in another way is to try not to go to hotels for long periods of time when you have to take a shower so you won’t have to take a shower when you get their. Another thing to do is to change with the lights off so the person looking in the camera can only see darkness but you can also turn on your phone flash and keep it on the floor so YOU can see what your doing and not the camera. Is gaff tape a brand name tape ? I would use Gorilla tape...or even duct tape , or even paper tape....and even spray paint , cept it cannot be taken off easily and you face room damage for that...

If going to hotel unplug clock if provided. Cover fire alarm. Cover TV. Any vent. Cameras come in different sizes, even small as a pin. Devices like alarm clocks and TVs can have cams.

There are many apps for cell phones that can detect hidden microphones. Cameras? I don't know. I'm more afraid of full length mirrors than cameras. I'd rather not know myself how out-of-shape I look.

Your camera on your phone can detect live cameras with a a faint but easy to see reflection. I do this when I'm in public restrooms before I use it but make sure you let people know or they will in fact call the police.
