    An option to look into for the 3M mask are p100 filter with organic vapor protect. This protects you from dust particles (HEPA filtration) and fumes associated with solvents/finishes. I used this setup for hobby and industrial settings and it works well. Plus 3M is actually NIOSH certified, unlike a lot of other brands often promoted in social media. Just my .02

    I love the the 3M 6500 Quick Latch. I'm a (Hobby) knife maker and I find this really useful because it has a latch thing at the front which allows it to be dropped down to your neck when not in use. For eye protection, I find a good quality face shield is better because safety goggles always steam up. Where I live it's extremely hot and humid (Hong Kong). I use in-ear protection because of headaches from head squeeze!

      I picked up one of these 3M masks when I recently got into resin 3d printing, and it is both a comfortable standard that has been around for years, and updated with the latch that I really like. I can walk into the house and drop the mask with one hand, so I tend to leave it on, therefore use it.
      For eye protection I wear glasses, so a full-face shield is my fave, sometimes tricky to get on over the respirator straps, but not that difficult. There are some that are more curved in at the bottom, the better than the big flat ones of old.
      I've tried many hearing protection solutions, even recently bought some Isotunes as they had a good Black Friday sale, but tend to use the cheap baffled earplugs with the strap. It hangs around my neck, I dont have to try to squeeze them down with dirty fingers, and work just fine.
      You're spot on about ease of use, it's worth it to buy a decent solution, 3M has been making this stuff for decades, "trendy" solutions often miss important facets, like durable straps.

    Hi Keith, I am a Health and Safety consultant so often find myself talking PPE. For respirators, I would recommend the JSP Force 8, they are the only mask with a reliable self-test feature. This means that you can test even with stubble growth to confirm the mask is actually working. They cost around £20(ish) with a pair of P3 filters. I am not paid or otherwise affiliated with JSP, I just love their masks.
    If you ever want any PPE / H&S advice, please reach out. I love your work and am a weekly watcher and subscriber.

    the Nasum/Generic Respirator looks to be similar to the 3m mask which i use. I had the plastic on the head strap brake but overall good mask. you can get different filters depending on your needs.

    The Nasum respirator is just a copy of the "6000 series" made by 3M. I've been using the genuine one for quite a while and it is by far my favorite : durable and compatible with many types of filters. It is a no brainer for me. Thanks for making all these nice videos !

      I want one of those 3m masks but I don't know what size to get. Not sure about trying them on either in the new covid world. Did you find a size chart that worked for you or have access to some to try on?

    • @peterdaenor7612
      @peterdaenor7612 2 роки тому

      @@andrewford80 I got mine as a gift...For what I know it seems that the M size fits most people. I have no idea if there is any sort of size chart or anything but as long as you don't have a giant or kid-size face I think that M should be ok. Btw I have seen an entire team of 20 technicians all using that size and there were no major issue.

    Thanks for putting up a video on PPE. As a former safety guy I can honestly say you cannot overstate the importance of personal safety. Not only is PPE important, but a proper attitude is essential. We all need to remember that it’s not just about protecting yourself, its keeping in mind the effect of an injury to you has on those you care about.

    Thanks for this video. I've been working mainly with hand tools at home (with the occasional use of a small trim router), and while I have been using a respirator and safety goggles, I don't have ear muffs. My circular saw was delivered yesterday and I realise that it is loud! Your comments about wearing goggles and ear muffs at the same time will be helpful as I choose the right pair for me. Thanks.

  • @SteifWood
    @SteifWood 2 роки тому +1

    Keith, depending on the materials you are working with, what about *safety boots?*
    I got a tip from an old woodworker to use [thick] leader shoes when working with chisels or other sharp tools that may fall off the bench and 'dig into' your feet. So for my daily woodworking I use a pair of comfortable all-leader Timberlands. When I know I will handle heavy logs, slabs, planks, mdf and plywood panels or nails during demolition work I switch to another pair. It took me a while to find a brand/model that felt easy on my feet and fulfilled multiple criteria, but ended up with a pair that has gel heel dampening, kevlar sole against nails, alu toe cap, are easy to take on and off, and light in weight.
    PS for respiration protection I found the 3M 7502 to be the best since it's easy to change cartridges btw woodworking dust and airborne chemicals, and is constructed so that it directs my breath away from my glasses (essential in cold weather). I also bought a pair of 3M Worktunes headphones/mufflers with Bluetooth for calls/music/podcasts, but they stopped working after a months and was/is just crap.

    • @RagnBoneBrown
      @RagnBoneBrown  2 роки тому

      I've only ever had one pair of boots, also Timberlands, steel toe cap. I tend to wear running shoes in the workshop as they're easier on my feet. It's all well and good protecting your toes etc from potential dropped items, but if your heels ache from standing all day in uncomfortable safety shoes, that's another thing to consider.

      I bought the Stealth mask a little more than a year ago and immediately didn’t care for it. When I exhale, the outgoing air doesn’t all go out through the filter or exhaust port (whatever it has), but rather all around where the rubber mask seats against my face, so it doesn’t keep a good seal.

    For ear protection I highly recommend getting moulded ear plugs. They are unique to you. The company takes an impression of your ears an produces the ear plugs from that impression. These are fantastic. They are light in weight, easy to use, perfect when you need to use glasses and a mask. They are also quite cool to wear (temperature cool). I used a company called Minerva, they were very helpful. The biggest thing though is that they cut out noise perfectly.

  • @twwanderer
    @twwanderer 2 роки тому +1

    Suggestion from a glasses wearer - Hit the tool freak arms with a heat gun until warm then gently bend them out to a wider position. Allow to cool and try them on again and keep repeating until you get a fit that works for you!
    I'm getting my eyes lasered soon so I'll finally be able to wear the tool freak ones I won from your competition!

  • @steenfraosterbro3268

    I'm also using the Stihl ones (bought them with my chainsaw). I did use the in ear plugs back in the days and they gave me outer ear infections (pretty painfull). Also people should realise that you will damage your lungs from wearing normal respirator for extended period of times, but then again so will breathing the dust. If you are a DIY (as I guess most of us are) you'll be fine but there is a reason for the full face systems out there (expensive). Breathing in the heavy moisture in most masks can cause pulmonary edema (water in your lungs).

    Always interesting hearing peoples views about the ppe they like. I really like one strap masks myself. Once set, I like it dangling round my neck between ops, then I just pull the upper part round my head when I need it again. Works for me. With you on specs. Got headaches with loads. I use the Uvex ones (though Bosch branded). Very similar to the Milwaukee ones you like. Might even be made by Uvex. They also appear Festool branded too.

    I’ve got the Trend mask, it’s pretty good but when combined with the Bolle glasses I have it’s a bit of a faff. I use Isotunes in ear doodads and sometimes wear a pair of cheapo ear defenders over the top. The Isotunes don’t turn up anywhere near as loud as normal earbuds do, but they do eliminate a fair bit of noise.

    I mostly use generic respirator like your “2nd favorite” but with 3M particle filters (when not dealing with fumes).
    My 2nd favorite is neoprene mask from Wester Safety.
    Safety glasses I usually use cheepos since I seem to damage/loose a lot of them.
    For ear protection I use generic muffs or corded “rubber” ear plugs… with cord removed

      I have the JSP Force 8 mask. It uses the testable filters so you can be sure to have a good seal, and two separate straps. It works really well and is comfortable to wear, if you ignore the condensation that all masks suffer from. The only downside for me is the nose cowling(?) is pretty big and comes a long way up my nose, unfortunately this stops me wearing my spectacles with the mask, so there's that to consider.

    When it comes to eye protection, I had the pair you like but hurt the back of the ear... I took a flick-able lighter, softened up the plastic both at the nose bridge to stretch them wider by a small bit, and also at the part of the arm that folds, which leads to your ear, just before the hinge. Took me about 3-5 minutes to adjust, but now they fit so perfect.

    From what I understand getting headaches from compression of the skull is normal. I personally get them if headbands are too tight, safety glasses are too tight, or I'm wearing something on my head that is pushing my glasses into my head causing compression. Same things go for any type of hat. On a different note if you have a baby girl there's elastic halo headbands are one of the worst things you can put on her. Not only can it cause the baby discomfort the nature of the product causes compression of the skull and in newborns and small children the bones have not fully hardened You can dent and permanently dent a baby's head from them, Just exactly the same way as you can flatten the back of the baby's head from having the baby on the back for entirely too long.

    Nice entertaining video Keith, love the descriptions of the PPE face masks, shame you did not point out (like me you have a beard or is that 3 day stubble?) but NO face mask will fit correctly unless its a full face shield... But I do use the trend mask as my go to with practice I get the clips on easily enough. but the ear defenders and goggles I agree the Milwaukee seem very comfortable.
    Good Job!

    I like glasses with a strap on them so they don't have to be tight on the arms but they still hold really securely to your face with no gaps. For hearing I prefer simple plugs, UVEX are my preferred brand, I forget which style. A pair is always in my pocket. As for a mask, I have a sundstrom and I like it but rarely use it as all my dust producing machines have DE hookup, wearing a mask isn't practical for me most of the time.

    One point to make Keith is those glasses you stood on are generally for people who already wear glasses. Plus the masks are all designed for people who don't wear glasses or have a beard. Nightmare really. Geoff

    I have the Elipse pair and i love them they are nice and comfy for me and a nice fit considering i have a beard, i liked them that much i bought the zipped up box which they can sit in for some protection when not in use.
    As for ear defenders i have three pairs, two in the shed and one in the house of the over the head type, i'm not that fussed of the in ear type i tried a pair and they were just uncomfortable in my ears, plus to me they don't block the sound out so much.

    Facial hair. A huge problem for the Navy. I also look for safety glasses that not only protect from flying debris, but from dust to avoid irritation. Thanks for the realistic appraisal. With regard to condensation, is that a problem (I just leave the mask to dry out)?

    Downside of in ear protection is that they can cause your ears to get blocked by wax as they push it down into your ears. This will affect some people more than others but if it does you are then faced with the cost of getting your ears syringed clean. 3M do some very good ear protection, I recommend the 3M Peltor Optime III which can be bought in 3 models, headband, behind the head so you can wear a cap or clip on.
    Also not all ear protection is created equal, you need to match the ear protection to the tools you are using. It is all about the Attenuation Value (SNR). It is worth reading about this and getting the appropriately rated ear defenders for the task at hand. 26/27/28dB rated ones should be okay for moderate noise levels such as woodworking, lawn mowing and construction, obviously any ear protection is better than none. At the end of the day you only get one set of ears and for some reason people have a thing about wearing ear protection, no end of times you will drive past road workers using grinders etc and there is non to be seen.
    Don't wear it and you will regret it in the future when your ear start ringing, so it was good to see you cover this important topic.

    • @rfphicks
      @rfphicks 2 роки тому

      Agree that in ear protection can cause some issues with earwax build up but it's easily avoided by putting olive oil or similar ear drops in your ears every couple of weeks. And even if you do need an ear syringe, it's free in the UK or you can get a cheap bulb syringe and do it yourself.

    • @C4sp3r123
      @C4sp3r123 2 роки тому

      @@rfphicks good point about the oil, though some of us naturally suffer more than others and that alone isn't sufficient. Ear syringe from the doctor is sadly rarely free now, if it is anywhere. The change has come in just the last few years depending where you are, regardless of how badly blocked you are. Doing it yourself is now what a lot of people therefore do but you do have to be very careful not to damage the inner ear.

    Biggest issue for me ... wearing prescription glasses with a respirator. They all push my glasses too far up the bridge of my nose. Can anyone suggest a suitable respirator (or different glasses?). The thin paper disposable 3M P3s work, but they are throw-away and really expensive in the long run.

    • @RagnBoneBrown

    • @cricalix
      @cricalix 2 роки тому

      As the fine owner of this fine channel says, the power cap type ones are what quite a few turners wear because you get fine dust protection and eye protection in one device. They tend to have an elasticated gaiter that hugs the neck, so beards are less of a problem too. I know Mike Waldt wears prescription glasses, and wears one; he even gets full audio pickup from a lav mic while using one. Trend, JSP, and 3M are the ones I'm aware of. Different brands put the battery in different places, so the weight distribution varies. Cost is indeed much higher than a simple pair of safety glasses and half respirator, but could well be worth considering.

    • @chrismaughan8029
      @chrismaughan8029 2 роки тому

      @@RagnBoneBrown That would be a good solution. Yes, more expensive and also more weight on your head, but at least you can see what you are doing. Trend/Stealth do a mask/goggles combo. If they made the goggle lenses with magnification equivalent to the most popular prescription lenses (+1.5, +1.75, etc) that would be a fantastic solution.

    Interesting to hear you viewpoints on this Keith. I have the old version of the isotunes in-ear protection which work well, though do have a tendency to pop out if my ears (I they’ve improved the in-ear bit on the new version). I’ve had the same issue with head pain with certain safety glasses worn with ear defenders, though I have the added complication of wearing prescription glasses, so options are severely limited on safety specs.
    As someone who works in t(e trade now, I have to say that the people who design the PPE clearly don’t wear the PPE, as many of the era defender/safety glasses/mask combos simply don’t work, giving headaches, causing glasses to steam up so you can’t see yourself cutting your hand off 😖 etc. In my opinion it’s one of the reasons you’ll often see trades working without - though I’m not condoning that and they will pay the price at some stage.

    The first eye protectors(that you said were useless and you broke), are essentially for putting over eye glasses, and thats there only real use. If you wear eye glasses, those first eye protectors are good for going over glasses.
    So thats there only real use, but obviously you do not seem to wear glasses, so thats why you broke them
