Modern interpretations of werewolves include grotesque transformations, bloodied muzzles, and loyal packs. Many of these tropes first appeared on film but how did the modern world integrate older fears of lupine shapeshifters into haunting depictions of modern anxieties? The second installment in Monstrum’s werewolf series looks at the evolution of the werewolf through Gothic fantasy, horror films, literature, and video games, exploring the monster’s evolution into one of popular culture’s most malleable metaphors. Also, Van Helsing's Werewolf looks awesome, and Bloody Roar's Yugo is also awesome.
It's stunning how well the CGI for the Van Helsing werewolf has aged, especially compared to so much of the CGI of films released in the years before and after it.
Yugo is one of the coolest examples of a werewolf as the lead hero especially since according to the Bloody Roar canon he forms a NGO humanitarian organization called the World of Coexistence also known as the WOC a group dedicated to forging peace between humans and Zoanthropes(Were-creatures)
Sabrewulf from Killer Instinct as well.
The Bloody Roar Series is one of my favorite Fighting Game Franchises of All Time.

I think Meagan Navarro makes an interesting point about the modern werewolf: There really isn't a definition anymore other than the transformation to a wolf or wolf-creature. I think this may be because the traditional themes associated with the werewolf are used elsewhere in popular culture. For instance, characters like the Incredible Hulk and Venom have a lot of the same themes as the "violent, tortured wolfman losing control," but to still keep it interesting, there's a superficial change in what they turn into: instead of a wolf or wolfman, it's a hulk-monster and an alien symbiote. The modern werewolf on the other hand, has kept the surface imagery but explores broader and more diverse concepts and themes.
I would like to see modern reimaginings of the wereWOLF specifically.
People in Western and post-industrial cultures tend to believe that humanity has control of nature. Why else would we in these societies keep driving to work, knowing that we've already damaged the planet's ozone more than we can repair?
But with the current pandemic, nature is pushing back. Wild coyotes began exploring the streets of downtown Chicago during the early lockdowns.
The COVID-19 virus itself acts like a monster: invisible destructive force transmitted from person to person, and those infected with it might not be honest about it.
You could take all that and make some cool new werewolf stories, I think

@@janeeyre1990 Netflix's love death sex robots did this with one of its shorts they were integrating werewolves into the military during Afghanistan.
Speaking of Marvel comics it was Marvel comics who introduced to the modern era the concept of the heroic werewolf in the form of Jack Russell the 1st Werewolf by Night this concept was based on certain bits Irish folklore that spoke of werewolves as guardians and protectors of women and children, and we would see more heroic lycanthropes as the 80s and 90s and this concept of the werewolf protagonist who uses his/her lycanthropy as a means to protect the innocent continues on in today's pop-culture.
I'm a little disappointed that there was no mention of "Wolfwalkers." In addition to how rare 2D animated films are nowadays, it really provided a look into werewolves and their tie to nature

I personally think that Underworld has done Werewolves really well. Different species and being slaves of the vampires and that caused a war that lasted centuries

I think Wolf Children is exactly what Olivia is looking for as far as a gentle depiction of Werewolves! Definitely one of my favorite animated films of all time.

Great channel! Werewolf movie idea: an egotistical, awful, just asshat of a person becomes a werewolf, and, when in 'wolf' form, becomes a caring, loving, genuinely well loved individual. They become the monster they believe they see in their own misinformed view of society.
Ooooo. Like when they transform, their canine - puppy - instincts kick in, and he just wants pets and cuddles and tries to protect the village/innocents, but he just absolutely hates it and tries to fight his canine nature.

Nice premise for a graphic novel or animated film.( Old school, not anime) Find some Canadian animators, they have a style all their own....reminds me of the underground stuff from the late 1970s.
And The human part can’t be a brute or a jock like biff tannon or Chet from weird science. He should be a know it all weasel that dominates people intellectually and verbally kinda like Herbert West or riddler. Not only has that kind character already been done before but allow for a contrast to the physically dominant werewolf. May be a scientist who tests a serum on himself and becomes vigilante crime fighter. Maybe as enough intelligence to plan attacks on mobsters

Werewolves have also existed in Chinese and Japanese (separately) with a lot of mythology and folklore involved. I was kinda sad, that none of the eastern folklore versions werent mentioned

In the most recent expansion of the card game Magic the Gathering is actually a Werewolf based set, even called "Midnight Hunt."
Set in a gothic horror world where the night is inexplicably getting longer, the werewolves are being rallied by one who believes that the transformation brings out the true nature of people and that people shouldn't hide from it. Told through a series of short stories, it follows a group who looks to investigate the cause, and find a solution to, the change in the day/night cycle.

Innistrad is an amazing setting. Don’t forget, Tovolar’s “Dire-Strain” werewolves/fanatics are MASSIVE in size compared to Arlinn and the other werewolves.

@@tinagoli2022 I think what Ripped Torn meant was that humans don't need to transform into bestial creatures to reveal a dark side. The human dark side is very easily observable all throughout human history and in our everyday lives. Wolves and other non-human animals are, in comparison, not really "dark".

Man, I just found this channel, specifically Dr. Z’s Monstrum, and am addicted to it. I’ve been binge watching this series all day today. Love it and Dr. Z is amazing.
Wow… Alvin and the Chipmunks meet The Wolfman was a great movie for children? It wasn’t awful. I loved it as a child. The songs were very catchy and I was able to see werewolves on screen without having nightmares. Eh, to each their own I guess?

"Wolfwalkers" (2020) is a beautiful animated film that introduces the idea of becoming a wolf and joining the pack when a person is asleep. It's well-worth a watch.
I wish Dr. Z. would have done more justice to the topic of werewolves in video games-Bloodborne, The Witcher, Skyrim, etc.-but it really doesn't surprise me that literally all she mentioned was the first instance of werewolves in video games. I've gotten the sense from her before, like in the draugr video, that she doesn't think very highly of video games, which is a shame since they're another form of storytelling that is interactive, immersive, and open ended, which allows players to interact with werewolves or become one, with all that that entails.
Video games have been misconstrued as a "child's" hobby for decades now and have been dismissed as a result, so I'm not surprised either. The stigma that games aren't another valid form of art is still going strong. But if it was any video game I thought she'd mention, I would've thought it'd been Bloodborne at least. That game's whole running theme is transformations and the hubris of man in their blind pursuit of ascension. It's littered with all kinds of werewolves. Maybe one day, that cult classic of a game will be appreciated by more people in the coming years, just as movies like Blade Runner did.
Don't forget SaberWulf from Killer Instinct, Jon Talbain from Darkstalkers, and Bigby Wolf from The Wolf Among Us! Okay I know that The Wolf Among Us was based off of a comic series, but it's such a great game, and no one hardly talks about it!
Let's not forget about the true tabletop RPGs, specifically Werewolf: the Apocalypse (part of the Classic Word of Darkness setting) and Werewolf: the Forsaken (part of the New Word of Darkness, with completely changed lore). The classic one is supposed to get the new, 5th edition soon and was adapted to two video games last year. Earthblood was a rather mediocre action cRPG, from what I've heard, but the Heart of the Forest is a very interesting indie visual novel with RPG elements. I only wish it was longer.

That protagonist being the only human trapped in a werewolf colony is the same energy as that Goosebumps episode where the human family moves into a zombie town
Jack Pierce didn't do the makeup for "Werewolf of London." When the lead actor (Henry Hull) discovered that someone recognizes who the werewolf is in the film, he explained that a lighter makeup was needed. This caused Pierce to quit the film. So Hull handled his own makeup.
That's one I want to see. TCM has it, but never when I am around.

Oh man, I LOVE Dr. Emily, but my fellow Dark Shadows fans are gonna be out for blood if they hear her refer to it as a comedy. It was never a comedy till Tim Burton got ahold of it. Also, Alvin and the Chipmunks meet the Wolf Man is excellent and pretty highly regarded among animation fans.
Have you ever looked into the old Tv series? There are 2 versions. They're better than the movie.
I had high hopes for the movie. Didn't know that Burton planned to make it a comedy, it would have been better if he had gone for either Thriller or Horror. Shame it flopped.

@@Comfortdoll Agreed. After the fact, it seems Burton wasn't right for the job after all (and though I like much of his work, I hope he stays away from Kolchak). Frankly, I think the 90's version took the original show and perfected it, and it would have been so much better for the theatrical version to basically take that and just amp up the budget and everything else to film level. The way that show was cancelled on a cliffhanger was so devastating. Really wanted to see a Quentin werewolf on there.
@@conniecarroll7222 Yes, I originally discovered Dark Shadows due to the 90's version (I was a teenager at the time). Though I have since come to love the original, the 90's version seems to me to take the original and perfect it. The cliffhanger cancellation was devastating. Really wanted to see a serious, bigscreen version. Love Tim Burton, but he really botched it. I can watch it for entertainment value, but as a true Dark Shadows interpretation, it is an epic fail. We could have had a whole franchise of films that could have gone on indefinitely.
Especially after mentioning The Munsters and claiming DS was the first to make werewolves funny. Of course, Eddie wasn't the only werewolf in The Munsters, as that trait came from his Dracula side and he had an uncle in perpetual Wolf Man form AND Grandpa (aka Dracula) got stuck in wolf form during a camping trip and couldn't change back. Those were played for laughs,, Dark Shadows might have some unintended humor we fans delight in, but it wasn't meant to be and it often was not seen as such at all at the time given that much is due to advances in film production today.
Well done! I think the tabletop RPG Werewolf: The Forsaken might actually be one of the best methods by which to explore the idea of werewolves as part of a world with other supernatural creatures, having to live with each other. It is part of the larger Chronicles of Darkness setting with Vampires, Mages, Changelings, and other beings existing together in the same world. Unlike certain other modern Werewolf media, there is no inherent hatred between supernatural creatures in this world. Werewolves and other creatures tend to keep to themselves and worry about problems unique to them instead of constantly seeking to fight each other. Conflicts do happen, but they are not inevitable and stories can be easily told about how the different groups must learn to live near each other.
I always look forward to a new Monstrum episode!

There simply isn't one. I'm skeptical that ANY werewolf lore can be tied to human murderers, but there certainly isn't any connection in the case of Gévaudan.
I remember that the main theory is that it was an escaped hyena that was kept as an exotic pet, or something along those lines. It fit the descriptions and accounts.

9:17 Warner Oland was swedish, not scottish. And he wasn't just "a -scottish- swedish actor in yellowface", he was THE swedish actor in yellowface. The guy was known worldwide for playing chinese characters, above all Charlie Chan in 16 movies alone. Pretty much every actor who performed in yellowface after that was influenced by him.

@@Oozaru85 Because we have no shortage of white characters, and the whole thing of casting white "actors" to play non-white characters was based in minstrelsy and meant to humiliate and excuse the dehumanization of poc groups, and later transformed into the bullshit "belief" of "Well there just aren't enough (insert non-white racial identity here) actors in the film industry, so -we should hire more- we'll just cast white people to portray them!" or my _favorite_ of the bullshit racist excuses for having white actors playing non-white characters, "The AcToR was chosen because of his aBiLiTy!" because apparently people of color are just not good actors like white men. 🙄 But nobody from *your* "party" seems to care... or you know, has the backbone to admit it. 🤔😏

Am I the only one who wishes werewolves (and vampires) were scary again? Idk I think it could be interesting to go a little back to their folklore roots and get back some of the mystery, something a la Eggers "The Witch"

Hey don't diss Alvin and the Chipmunks meet the wolfman! It's fun and cute! It's one of the movies I watched as a kid that got me into horror, be nice to it!
In the online animated series, RWBY, there’s a type of Grimm called the Beowulf, which is based on the Big Bad Wolf from the Little Red Riding Hood, but the design is based on werewolves. Also, there’s stories of werewolf like creatures existing in Michigan and Wisconsin, they are known as “The Dogman”. There’s even a song about the “Dogman” called “The Legend” that came out in 1987.

@@lechugosoxo yeah we know. That’s why RWBY used the name. All of the characters and creatures take inspiration from fairy tales, myths, legends, literature, etc. That’s part of the fun of the show figuring out who inspired each character and it isn’t always easy because sometimes the character is gender swapped or an obscured reference and the creators have to tell us who inspired that character. (Although sometimes even they forget who a character is based on🤷♀️)

I'm surprised there was no mention of Cynocephali and how St.Christopher is a wolf-headed man in some Russian Coptic traditions (though Cynocephaly may technically count as a their own monsters).

I’d like to give an honorable mention to “Wolf” (1994) starring Jack Nicholson and “Cursed” (2005) starring Christina Ricci.
The Beast of Barmston Drain had a bit of a resurgence in local folklore around the end of 2016 in Hull, a few "sightings" were reported. the Water treatment plant nearby, which is closer to the Holderness drain, was nicknamed Old Stinker, as the plant was leaking making the main road into the city from the east smell of sewage for several months.
OK, first of all, I have to disagree in that "Alvin & the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman" is a cinematic masterpiece (OK, maybe not that far, but I do like it!).
And second of all, another unique interpretation I've loved is in "Once Upon a Time", where they made a great twist of Red Riding Hood being a werewolf. It's not only a genius twist on the classic fairytale, the reason for her werewolfism is also unique in that she inherited it from her mother, who inherited it from her grandmother.
Love the new episode and this series. I hope you do an episode on mummies and their evolution in the horror genre!
I am surprised you never mentioned RPG with werewolf content. World of Darkness comes to mind first and foremost with its extensive tribes of werewolves and its unique alternative history of Earth.
The folklore legends in the South of my country regarding werewolves are fascinating: if a couple has 7 sons - in a row, no daughters in between and, in some places no chidren born dead or that died before being 1 year old -, the seventh will either be a saint, or a werewolf. No more details, just that. Usually moonlight is envolved in a transformation, but it was mostly seen as something managable.
Also, if a couple as 7 daughters in a row - same conditions as previously mentioned -, the seventh will either be a saint or a witch. And here there's an extra detail: you can immediately tell which one the girl will be, because if she's to become a witch, her eldest sister, the firstborn, will develop the gift of foresight the moment her youngest sister is born.
Big Wolf on Campus was my first exposure to werewolves. And that theme song is now forever stuck in my head.

The 1999 movie Ravenous was a take on the wendigo as a communicable condition, which made it alike to werevolves.
In the World of Darkness, the earth was ruled by hyper-intelligent were dinosaurs that predated humanity.
Don't forget the Werewolf TV series featuring Jack Palance!!! One of the best transformation sequences ever!

In Ben 10 there was a type of alien species that looked similar to and followed a similar trope to the werewolf and it's bite/scratch transmuting it's victims. Interesting take!

In the video, the film stills for "The Wolf Man" (1941) and "The Werewolf" (1956) were mixed up.
Warner Oland, the actor who plays Dr. Yogami in "Werewolf of London" wasn't Scottish. He was born in Sweden (I'm guessing that some relation to the Sami people of northern Scandinavia gave him his Asian-like appearance) and moved to the U.S. when he was 13.
Just wanna say that I was SO happy when you guys mentioned Artie and the wolf Moon! I absolutely love that book, and seeing the author talk about it and such made me super happy!!
England may not have much in the way of werewolf lore but we had real-life wolves until fairly recently and we have a lot "Black Dog" myths. There is a lot of wolf symbolism in old english folklore if you look for it.
The Animal Wife is a fairly common trope. It often involves the woman having a secret from her husband, which may involve an odor &/or a skin or fur, and when the husband questions or discovers her, she leaves, along with any children they might have. Pre-dating Ginger Snaps was a British series in 1996 called Wilderness. It starred Amanda Ooms as a mild-mannered librarian who turns into a werewolf once a month. I watched it as a teenager, it made quite the impression!
i wrote a character that has ties to lycanthrope years ago, i'm thankful for this video because i get to cross-reference it with my lore which turns out to be not so far-fetched at all
EDIT: also i've been writing a new one who is a tenant in an apartment complex owned by a vampire

Wow you really delved deep for this one. I especially like the mention of Werewolf: The Apocalypse. The World of Darkness is very well developed in their story world.
My all time favorite movie is "An American Werewolf In London". I can quote the entire movie; "Where to now Kessler, Duck's breath?"...lol

I always wanted to see a film version of Robert R. McCammon's "The Wolf's Hour" - in which the werewolf actually turns out to be less of a monster than many of the humans he runs into.

@@theunknown5386 well,few movies depict werewolves according to their folklore roots. Most are based upon the tradition of movies like The Wolf man. Cool,but very glamorous interpretations of the werewolf. Few werewolves on screen are designed right also.
The werewolf is a pretty big folkloric figure in Brazil, because I think it is actually pretty common for people to know someone who has a story of an uncle or grandparent, who saw one at some point in life, specially if they come from the countryside (but not exclusively) both old and quite recent cases. The werewolf is so present, that there is an actual newspaper report of a woman who saw a capybara at the restroom of a dinner and the first thing she thought it was, was a werewolf. The Brazilian werewolf, differs quite a lot from the European and the midia ones though, being commonly described by witnesses as large creatures, with dark fur, shinning eyes and looking more like dogs, pigs or a tapir, and they are loners, no packs here. The non transformed form is described as sick looking. The most common story of how a person becomes a werewolf is by being born a boy after six or seven sisters, and if measures are not taken, the person transforms at age of thirteen.

The "werewolves" in the Wheel of Time series were pretty cool (in regards to wanting sensitive werewolves).
*EDIT:* they aren't really monsters, just another way of being human.
*EDIT2:* don't get your hopes up too high though, they are around until the very end of the series, but they probably aren't as soft and sensitive as your might want :( Just a pleasantly different take on what it means to be a werewolf.

You sort of completely overlooked the broadly successful White Wolf RPG _Vampire_ and its spinoff/companion _Werewolf_ all under the _World of Darkness_ umbrella. This of course inspired a lot of internet werewolf RP, art, 'original' fiction, fan fiction, video games (same or similar IPs) and the Underworld movies in all but name - see the associated lawsuit that White Wolf lost since they couldn't trademark the broader concept. That's a lot to leave out. I'm gonna assume ignorance. As a gamer, although I don't really like WoD, I have to be fair and accredit it its due.
Great two-part series you've got here, added to the ongoing collection of Monstrum! A few responses to this second part. First, the Werewolf of London makeup wasn't so reserved because of a lack of makeup tech, but rather because actor Henry Lull did not want his face obscured by a lot of makeup. Second, I found it odd that The Howling was given extensive coverage due to its graphic transformation scene when An American Werewolf in London had a classic scene of equal intensity. At the Collative Learning UA-cam page there is an analysis as to why the latter is more effective than the former. It boils down to personal preference, but the unbalanced treatment in this video was curious. Minor criticisms to be sure. Keep up the good work.
My favorite transformation is from Trick R Treat. Those girls looked so powerful, I was 15 when I saw it… and I had never wanted to be a werewolf more than at that time, I rewatch it on UA-cam all the time because it’s just priceless. I love that movie.
You forgot other video game werewolves like SaberWulf from Killer Instinct, Jon Talbain from Darkstalkers, and Bigby Wolf from The Wolf Among Us! Okay I know that The Wolf Among Us was based off of a comic series, but it's such a great game, and no one hardly talks about it!

Oh! I wrote a whole essay on my thoughts on werewolves (mostly from a perspective of a dungeon master).
It's interesting, especially today, how you oft see one of two broad categories of Werewolf. You get the affliction that turn into more of a monster (oft grappling song the man/beast struggle) or you get the sort of power up (sometimes but not always featuring a bit of the struggle). I think both can be neat but I've found what I think is an interesting way to marry the concepts.
Werewolves are that animalistic part of our brain unshackled. This doesn't mean we all become slavering monsters but some do. However, many become dangerous and violent for a different reason: fear. You start transforming into a monster and you panic, it's terrifying and you don't know what's happening. That wolf then comes into an unfamiliar setting in a state of abject fear that it can't flee from. So what does it do? Lash out like any cornered animal. Then people start attacking it and it only gets worse! Of course it's seen as violent! But if you can focus your emotions better pre transformation you can bring the wolf into a better setting thus making it less violent.
That's a sort of pared down version of my overriding point but I think it's neat.

Dr. Franck's description of the ecological reading of the werewolf sounds like the central theme of Werewolf: The Apocalypse, while her wish for werewolves to be depicted alongside other monsters is very commonly the situation in Dungeons & Dragons. Either way, the way modern fantasy manifests in tabletop role-playing games is worth exploring!

Man I can't wait to get done writing my book. It deals with these and loads of other supernatural creatures and how they have to adapt to and live among humanity often in secret. The Paranormal Romance aspect of it is just a nice little bonus cherry on top.

We affectionately call it *Inner Demons* and it follows the daily lives of an Atlantean, a Demon, a Witch, and of course, a Werewolf.
I hope it will not be trash woke ideology like our werewolf expert have been displaying in this episode but a good story.

I published a book last year, based on werewolves. 'Don't go out there!' I am in the process of publishing part 2 and writing part 3. My werewolves are different. Although still violent, they only attack people who deserve to die.
I actually wrote two poems that featured werewolves in them. The rains of Lazarus and its sort of sequel the Pelt Snatcher. It was fun and both feature a Rougarou which is essentially a catholic Fench werewolf in Cajun folklore.
The Rougarou is more of a demonic wolf possession thing than the normal werewolf

Your film stills starting at 6:24 are backwards. The shot you've labeled as from "The Wolf Man" is not in the film anywhere, whereas the scene you've labeled as "The Werewolf" IS from The Wolf Man.
Do the Swedish "Myling" it's is such an interesting"creature" it gives an insight into the struggle women had to go through back in the day. Also se related "Änglamakerskor" (Eng : Angelmakers) if a good night's sleep is not on your schedule.
Swedish Author Johan Egerkrans has gathered alot of Swedish mythology and he recently got an award for his work. Some of his book's can be found translated to English.
