In this special Halloween episode of Monstrum, I travel to the town of Point Pleasant, WV to research the complicated history of the flying creature. You'll learn how the town was forever changed by the myth of the Mothman. Newspapers gave the winged, red-eyed creature its name after it was spotted on November 15, 1966-an incident followed by almost a hundred other eyewitness accounts. Exactly 13 months later, the paranormal activity culminated in a very real tragedy--the collapse of Point Pleasant’s Silver Bridge. Some claimed Mothman was the cause of the accident, others say he was actually meant to forewarn the town of the catastrophe. The accident claimed 47 lives, so why does the town of Point Pleasant celebrate the monster with a festival every year and adorn their main street with a statue of his likeness?
You'll see how Mothman became a global phenomenon outside of West Virginia by the famous book The Mothman Prophecies and its later film adaptation. Monstrum looks at the lingering effects of the real events that made the Mothman notorious, interviewing local Point Pleasant experts and hunting for the Mothman at some of its most famous haunts. #mothman #cryptid #mothman_prophecies #MonstrumPBS

In Norway, and probably other places too, we have something called forest terror. I have experienced it myself. It's when you walk in a forest and you inexplicably feel something is out there and you just have to run away. With stories adding to that, it is no wonder you would feel terrified in a forest that is probably as lovely as any other. It also serves as a way to explain why people can get scared by imagination alone.

Obviously.
Ha!
This theory deserves a thesis written about it.
The first instance was probably a whip-poor-will or Chuck-will’s-widow. They hang out on roads, have red eye shine, and long wings. After that, it was probably just everyone buying into the myth.

I used to be a traveling repairman. I went to Point Pleasant 3 times. I met a couple who saw the Mothman. They were serious. They said the creature followed their car at high speeds. The one ladies dad was driving. Even he was scared. I later on talked to a preacher, who saw the Mothman perched on a fence. Ever since it sat there, no green growth will grow around where it was sitting. He showed me the spot.

Plus their so big that it makes it look like their standing up on human type legs. If you’re not familiar with ThunderBirds , check into them. It’s worth it in my opinion.
I looked it up, I think you might be onto something.
This is an awesome channel. I'm so glad to have stumbled upon it! And _Monstrum_ is a great way to learn about historic myths and legends in a curated and sensible way, without additional historicization. Thanks for all you do!
🎉
The fact that Emiliy is actually a Dr. In the related field and not simply sone random host reading a script made by a guy who made some internet research simply adds to the show.
If this show was hosted by Greg and started "hey, i'm greg, welcone to monstrum" simply does not have the same effect (at least for me) than "I'm Doctor Emily Zarka, and this is monstrum"
I also love this reply. And the Dr's 'love' too. Given that Dr Zarka's PhD was "in English from Arizona State University, with an emphasis on the Gothic and the British Romantic period" (from her website: www.emilyelizabethzarka.com/ ), we can be safe in the knowledge that Dr Zarka is authoritatively writing about fiction. Don't get me wrong: it's a great video.
But I suspect the real story is something along the lines of "a few people, who might have been in a questionable state of mind, thought they saw something, then everyone else thought there was something to see so, when they also saw something they didn't quite see properly, decided it was the same thing". Weird sightings go in trends: in the 16th/17th century it was witches on broomsticks; in the 1950s it was flying saucers. Brains are odd and easily confused, but they really, really like to have concrete answers. So they make things up.
We are (to steal a notion from the Science of the Discworld series) Pans narrans - the storytelling chimpanzee. We should sometimes just accept that.
Stupid me - I keep telling myself not to comment before I've finished watching. I just picked up at about 9 minutes in (yes, I said "it's a great video" - I really had been enjoying it, just not quite finished it. D'oh!) and the Doc is talking about mass hysteria, so I really got ahead of myself there. Sorry.

Years ago, I was in an Italian orchard with my wife - yes, we were lost: Italian maps were that good back then - and half a tree took off. We eventually figured out that it was an eagle owl. They are quite large but not that big. Our sense of perspective takes a huge hit when we are surprised. Perhaps the brain blows things up to make them seem more scary so, just in case it *is* something to be worried about, we run away faster. Anyway. Definitely an eagle owl in our case. And I suspect something like that with these reports. A big raptor or, at night, a big owl. But it's a fun story.

Here’s my “Mini-Mothman Experience”
Around the time The Mothman Prophecies movie was released, I was walking my dog late at night. The area was dark w/ lots of trees. Lights were shining from houses in the distance, so not pitch black. I see a small, dull, red glow moving above me in the branches of an oak tree. Looked like red bioluminescence. I freeze. My brain jumped to the movie. “Is it the Mothman? For real? In Louisiana? Why? How? AHHH!” Thankfully, I had a flashlight for night, potty dog-walks. Switched it on and pointed the light upward. It was a giant moth the size of my hand or bigger. The back of his head reflected brighter red from my flashlight. Didn’t explain how he was glowing red in the darkness only seconds before. My heart started beating again and my dog & I continued our walk.
Still have not seen a similar looking moth 18 yrs later. Not even sure what species he was.

The couple who spotted him and escaped him in the car actually turned around and went BACK to the same spot to confirm their sighting and dismiss any arguments that they were crazy. I seen the moth man last night!!!! I tried for an hour to help him stop hitting his head on the ceiling of my closed in back porch as he tried to find his was out. Finally between the two of us he was successful and went on about his way. Glad I could help him
Me: It looks like a moth-like human body.
Others: Looks like a bird with human body.
Yikes it's a mutation!🩸🩸
I love how they show her finding the information from real, tangible resources. Real investigation work.
Yet unfounded lol
your explanition is amazing
A few years ago I was camping in an area close to Bigfoot Territory near Salt Fork State Park in Ohio. It was late at night and I had a fire going and was sitting by it reading a book and drinking a beer. Around 11:00 p.m. I heard a strange rustling in the trees behind my tent. Then I heard low guttural growls. I stood up, turned around and as I did a huge hairy creature emerged from the woods not more that 25 feet from me. It stood 8 feet tall and had to weigh in excess of 450 pounds. I stood motionless not knowing what to do when the creature dictated the narrative. It slowly lifted its right hand and pointed to the beer I was holding in my hand. I immediately realized the beast wanted a beer. And why not? It was at least 85 degrees and so humid you could cut the air with a knife. I popped a brewsky and gave it to him and motioned for him to come sit by my fire. He capitulated and as we sat by the fire I lit a cigarette. He became agitated and started motioning to my mouth and then to his mouth. Damn, the Dude wanted a smoke. So I lit one for Bfoot and we continued socializing, drinking our beer and having a few smokes. Eventually Bfoot's eyelids began to droop. The beer was making him sleepy. He arose, waved goodbye and walked away, whistling as he disappeared into the woods. I didn't encounter the creature again, but after that I never went into the woods without my Bud Light and a carton of Marlboros.
"When you were there to help people but they're scared of you"
Mothman: I'm fine I'm not crying
**presumes to cry**
it's just like what people thought of Batman in the beginning of his war against evil
Sounds like absol
Presumes, huh?
*presumes* to cry?????
"Resumes"
Man i missed these type of scholar type of documentaries
Ps if you guys get big and funded It would be awesome to travel to other countries and investigate other urban legends
Like Baba Yaga.
Bless those intellegent none cannibal bugs
Bless those secret lands
Bad kids get buttwhooping here
Even birds
I am on board with the owl explanation. There are plenty of small birds that people get used to seeing, but then there are very large birds and it's quite startling. I walked over a small hill on a golf course and found myself fifteen feet from a blue heron. That thing was huge.
I'm only here because my wife and I had something huge and grayish fly in front of my truck last night around 8:30pm here in NY state. It was just above where my headlights hit really good. We were just coming to our off ramp on the expressway. We both sat there for a second and didn't say anything, then she said "what was that?" I said " I saw it too but didn't want to say anything because I didn't think you saw it. or thought I was just seeing things". Whatever it was, it was huge!

*Whispers* “Yes, Mothman!” (6:25)
Read this just as it was said
PBS, Please send Dr. Zarka out to more on-site locations! This is the best Mothman video I've seen on UA-cam and I've watched Buzzfeed Unsolved's Mothman episode countless times. Different vibe, of course, but I prefer this one! The way she went to the library to check the archives, the different on-location shots, who she interviewed, and how she tied in the story is perfect!!
Amazing video! Merci, folks 🍻
Probably thought the rear lights were a potential mate :( Sad
Looool poor MM
Whatever, still got laid.
Probably gave it to the tailpipe.
"Where you goin babe I still gotta show you my free style?"
LOVE the new setup!!!!! The excitement on finding new info, the lenght, the outside filming, the interviews and glad the animations are still included!! Please never stop making Monstrum videos :D
I was looking for this comment! I love seeing her go out into the field, conduct interviews, etc., too!! Hopefully as Monstrum becomes more and more popular, they'll be able to work more outside the studio (I'm also so glad they kept the animations, though, they really are awesome)
@@sarahberlaud4285 Yes exactly! Glad you agree :D
I liked the actual locational investigation you did for this one!
The content quality is top notch ❤
Something I love about monstrum is that you not only tell the legend "as it is" you also consider the cultural impact and social angle of the stories, and this time you even went to the place!
Recently, PBS studios took a survey, & asked for suggestions. I recommended a Monstrum type show, because Monstrum is amazing. This particular type of video is perfect for what I was trying to say.
Amazing video btw, modern myth mothman. I liked how the townspeople were honest about not believing but doing it for tourism; they could have lied but didn't. I loved your enthusiasm, Emily.
Thanks for taking the survey!
@@pbsvoices - Howtohunt.com for the truth about sasquatch.
Love these long ones
Omg thankyou so much for this.
I thought of the harpy eagle because of the size and the antennae-like "ear" feathers. Maybe someone brought one in from afar and it got loose.
Love it when the lady you interviewed said she could see the feathers on its wing then you immediately said all witnesses agreed that it got wings with no feathers, boss!
TheArthurkan I noticed that, too. I thought, wait...didn't that lady just finish saying it had feathers?
Emily said in a post she meant no feathers _on the body_
I came here to say this.
I don’t care if he’s real or fake, I love Mothman, easily my favorite cryptid
30 miles from Point Pleasant is the Black Forest Region of Pennsylvania, ground zero for Thunderbirds in America. Mothman was a bird 6 ft. tall, 11 ft. beak to tail with a wingspan that was 22 feet. It pulls its head down between its shoulders when landed, so there would appear to be no head and huge eyes in the area of the upper chest.
