  • The second most dangerous thing you can do is dismount your horse and most people do it wrong. In this video I talk about what is wrong with how most people dismount and I show you how I do it.

    Such an important tip! I do what you described at the end -- pull my left foot back so that only the toe is in the stirrup, swing my right foot over and then lean over the saddle and take my left foot out of the stirrup, then land on the ground with both feet at the same time. At my age that's actually the only way I can get off. I can see how leaning over the saddle could frighten a young horse, but my horse ❤ is 18 and when he knows I'm getting off, he's evenly planted on all fours 😂

    I took riding lessons as a kid and this dismounting technique has always stuck with me. I’ve been chided many times for hopping down with both feet instead of stepping down, now I feel vindicated. Thanks Tim, great info!

    Regardless of the discipline, this is such an important point. After an injury, I started dropping one foot at a time just to avoid the jar of both feet hitting the ground at the same time. Thank you for this reminder. Safe beats comfortable.

    I didn't even know there was another way to dismount! I've always hopped but then again, that's what we're taught at my stable 😅 Glad to see we've been doing it right!

    My TWH is 16'2 and I'm 68 yrs. old and that's how I dismount, EXCEPT putting my hand on the horn, and I have caught my shirt on it. Thanks for that tip! Will be doing it this way from now on. Even if he was 14'2, I would still get off that way. He stands like a rock when I dismount, too. He will be 23 May 2nd and still going strong!

    Sorry Tim...no questions.
    But after watching this, I thought back to how I was dismounting during my short riding experience.
    I believe I was inconsistent, but I believe that probably had a lot to do with which horse I was riding.
    If it was one of the two taller horses, I did it the way you demonstrated, pretty much because you have to.
    If I was on the shorter one, I still had my left foot still in the stirrup, as my right foot was on the ground.
    Consider myself lucky to have never gotten into trouble when I did that 😏

    I rode english for a long, long time on very tall horses so this way of dismounting was a given. I do kick my foot out of the stirrup just as my leg clears the horses back and slide down the saddle even now that I ride western but thankfully it has never bothered any horse, young or old . I just made sure to slide down slowly.

      Buy English saddles do not have horns, so I hold the far side of the front; never the horn.

    This is how I do it also but, it’s because my left hip is toast so it won’t bend enough to leave it in the stirrup to get off anyway. But, now I realize it’s better anyway cause I’m not hanging off the side of them all the way to the ground.

    • @melissahilbrand
      @melissahilbrand Рік тому

      It was actually a barrel futurity trainer that got me started doing it before my hip got this bad because I couldn’t bend enough to get my rubber bands off my feet and I started doing the hanging the foot in the stirrup and leaving it til I was on the ground to reach the band on my foot. He was like no ma’am. You are gonna get killed. He got me straight.

    I've always kicked both stirrups off while I'm still in the saddle and then swung my leg over and jumped down.

      That is good with broke horses but it can spook some young horses.

      I used to do this when I was younger. At 65 my right leg doesn't clear the rump anymore, even if I lean way forward, but my horse hates it when I do that anyway. Getting old sucks 😂😂

    I actually do slide after swinging leg over & out of left stirrip; I'm really short and my horse isn't, LOL! However, she's really good about standing (probably bc she knows that treats come next).

    I did that with a stable horse WAY faster!! On a trail ride, we came to a small meadow. The horse decided this was the perfect place to get me off her back (the #1 priority of any stable horse is to get your off their back). She rears and someone yells see's gonna roll. In seconds I had kicked off my stirrups, vaulted off the horse and rolled away. Took about 5 seconds. It was a jolt when I hit the ground, but my 10 year old body bounced right back. I got up, grabbed the reins and gave her a sock on the jaw (a 10 year old punching a horse hurts the horse about as much as a mosquito landing, but they do realize that they don't have a rube in the saddle). I brushed off the saddle, checked the girth, and got right back up. Like Girlfriend, you ain't getting away with the with me!!!
    But normally I dismounted in the way you show :)

    Do you have any tips for mounting a horse? I had a bad accident off a mounting block and I tense up and freeze and forget what I need to do. I essentially hesitate. If I also couldn't find my stirrup how would I get on quietly as I can and safely?

    So, in just the last 6 mo or so, I have had my foot get hung up in the left stirrup. I have no idea why this has begun after riding for years and never have had it happen. I am 60 yrs old now so I'm wondering if it's a weaker muscle issue or what. Any advice?

    • @timandersonhorsetraining

      I am almost 60 and I have noticed that all of my body is not as strong as it used to be so my guess is that it is similar with you.

  • @teresadasilva4777
    @teresadasilva4777 Рік тому

    Why don't you take both feet out of the stirrups before you swing your right leg over ? I do that because I don't want any part of my body attached to the saddle while dismounting.
