These are wild INDIAN Lions!
Once upon a time the Asiatic lion roamed a massive range all the way from Turkey to the Eastern part of India.
Unfortunately there numbers plummeted as they were hunted heavily. In India specifically, British colonial officers and Indian rulers hunted the lions for sport in the 1900s.
By this point only a couple were left in India’s Gir Forest.
Thanks to the protection and conservation of these lions the numbers have increased to around 600 individuals.
This of course is fantastic news, but with these lions isolated to one small range, the question remains whether their population could face other threats, such as viruses.
This is currently the only place in the world where you can see wild Asiatic Lions.
