Daaaamn, Denzel is amazing, and Viola just nails it, too. There is a charm, a flow, a great tension in this play, with good chemistry between the actors. Some scenes made me laugh, some made me afraid... like the last scene with Denzel speaking to Death. He's my favorite actor, and after seeing this, I'm even more of a fan. Can't wait for the movie to come out.
It's amazing that Denzel hired most of these actors to reprise their roles for the film. And, the film was awesome, earning Viola an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
Don't get no better than that. Viola is a beast in this role, in any role. She is just a masterpiece walking. Denzel met his match for real. They need to do a film together.
I saw the movie yesterday. Phenomenal script and acting. It is disturbing to me when people laugh inappropriately during scenes where the message far out weighs the way it was delivered. It implies to me, that they aren't listening to the meat of the message. There are so many life lessons in this creation of August Wilson's.....so much heavy dysfunction that runs through families and in particular the Black family. It was cathartic for me as I have lived my life with some of the very issues discussed. This should be required viewing for high school freshmen.
Yes Mimi, I agree with you, and you are so correct. I know a sista who would greatly benefit from watching this film because she struggles with a father who was much like the father in this play/film.
BrownSugarMimi infact now that i watch it till the end it is extremely odd they laugh so much its not a comedy even at the most dramatic scenes there is laughter wtf is wrong with tht audience
Kevin Corrigan You ask a question that generations of "our people" have been trying to answer. Until I can get my sister/brother to take my pain, my trauma seriously....they will continue to laugh, when I'm crying out for clarity. But Alas....keep hope alive !!
Denzel Washington & Viola Davis are 2 of the finest actors today & they were perfectly cast in this. But I've also got to give credit to James Earl Jones for setting the bar up for them. This was a fantastic play & heartbreaking to watch.
I use these clips in my 11th grade classroom, and we always discuss the energy of the crowd and how different it is when viewed as a comparison to James Earl Jones' version. The crowd here definitely didn't grasp the severity of the scene...they saw DENZEL on the marquee and bought tix.
@@kiasky1 Denzel is very good but James put force behind his role as Troy. Denzel is very charismatic with his position as Troy and makes it very entertaining but James has the ability to make an environment zero fun when he makes you want to know he's serious. Man can make you feel like a kid that got in trouble even if you aren't on stage lol
James Earl Jones brings his "A" game every time he takes the stage. He's just that damn good. He understands nuance. Denzel Washington is great too, no doubt, but Jones brings true gravitas to whatever role he does.
Yes sir you have right but mr. James earl jones have a style to do his acting and denzel have his style and the denzel style is more relax and needs to be a difference beetwen both style serious and hard styles of mr. Jones and the relaxing and fluid way of denzel.
Oh shut the fuck up. For one, those audiences were almost all white. For two, it's not 1987 or 1988. The audience was younger and more about relatability than being stuck up. I'm so sick of white people thinking the way you do things is the ONLY way they are to be done. Such arrogance.
One of the many things that stand out to me in this story is the part played by Ms. Viola Davis. There are many Rose Maxson's out here and they dont get enough credit. Women who deal with toxic men that wound everybody they touch. Women that love and have the courage to spend life with Troy Maxson types. Im not trying to make Troy seem like the worst thing ever but it takes a lot to deal with such a person. There are many women out here who do it daily and what would man do without them.
@@kevinzhang6623 difference is that since the beginning of time, women have been expected to stick with a man no matter what. men left their wives who didn't perform to their standard with far less judgment or recourse than if a woman left. a woman's had to be beaten within an inch of her life for others to accept why she left (though often enough people would ask what she did to warrant being beaten or receive the treatment that she left over). a man could leave because she didnt cook on time enough or blow him often enough and get understanding (even support) from others.
This Scene/Scripted for the play-(Why Don’t You Like Me? Etc) is so great and hits us in a powerful personal way that I put it in the same iconic category as Hamlet’s TO BE OR NOT TO BE method in play acting 🎭 ❤😢😮😅👍🥂🌹
I have watched the movie with Denzel Washington several times and seen the play recently in my hometown. I considered it a profoundly sad commentary on 1950's society and one man's life of missed opportunities and poor decisions. Some lines may be humorous, but I have no idea how people can laugh at nearly every line delivered by Troy Maxson, Rose Maxson or Jim Bono. I have to believe the actors were perplexed by the audience laughter - but what do I know.
Watched this film yesterday. Stage plays are different because the audience is different every single day. One day the father son scene will have zero laughter. This particular day the audience laughed. It could have been nervous laughter or because they were playing it that way.
Some of y'all be talking about the audience laughing cos they don't get the depth of it or something. Common. This isn't the full play, just snippets. I could tell from what I saw that every time the audience laughed, the actors and apparently the director intended it. A good play should take you through a rollercoaster of emotions, that includes laughter no matter how intense the play is. It's okay to laugh at times even in the face of really tough situations. We all do. So ain't nothing wrong with the audience laughing at some point.
These comments just remind me so much of how entitled white people are. How your repressed way of acting around other people is the way everyone else is supposed to be. To hell with that. If Black people find something funny...because it is funny to them, they are entitled to laugh. August Wilson wrote this with us in mind any damn way...so maybe, we laugh because we can relate or we've seen something or we understand it. These comments...and this was 10 years ago. So sick of being forever expected to abide by the white gaze.

I read the play and cried couple of times and here the audience is laughing :(
Viola Davis... one of the best.
She killed it!!
She earned that Tony/Oscar for this Role

proverbsgal They did, Antwone Fisher.
De'Garryan Andrews Right! They need to do another one. Lol.

+Abram Chamberlain Now they will!
YOUr wish came TRUE! they are making this into a film!
Viola Davis is truly amazing

Viola & Denzel are the best actors in history with amazing chemistry to match!
They are all incredible! The live performance is even better than the movie.
4:40-5:07 gets me every time. Two acting geniuses. Love them both!!! 😍😍😍😍😍
chills. just chills. I bet this was amazing to watch live!

Such a great acting ♥️♥️
I love the movie he ain't taking no mess from his son Denzel asked Viola to trust him and she did
why are people laughing at this? this is Fences, not Sanford and Son
wiisalute because when Denzel Washington is acting in this he does it in a comical and Dramatic way at the same time

Exactly! These clips are great, but they make me want to watch the whole play even more!
