    In this video I explore what to most is considered the high point of the Coronation of the British sovereign, the crowning. I also look at the investiture with the regalia: the armills, the stole, the robe royal, the orb, the sceptres, ring and the glove - what these all symbolise and what has changed in the coronation this year of Charles III

    If you have the time, what would you think of how a Scottish coronation, Presbyterian and at Scone/Boot Hill would work? I seem to recall the Stuart monarchs had an English and a Scottish coronation. What would it look like today? What would be used? How might it differ?
    Was facinating to see the Scottish-English differences surrounding the Queen's death (wearing the Thistle, the Crown of Scotland on the casket, etc).

    Amazing... Although I understand why the King wants people of other faiths there I would sooner have the traditional peers fulfil their hereditary roles and for everything to be less messed about with
    I mean I think it would be more magical and meaningful if everyone was equally invested and involved with the form and meaning of the words and there is more power (I feel) for the descendant of the people who fulfilled the roles for his forbears to echo these actions at this coronation I feel bad for those families whose long treasured family honours have been swept aside to make way for people who are or have been career politicians

    • @carus6280

      I agree it would have been better to find new roles for the faith representatives. It could have been a great opportunity to add a new item of regalia to remind the monarch of his role to protect all faiths. Perhaps a second glove to represent balance but unfortunately the opportunity has been lost.

      Except that those families, unlike in 1953, no longer play a role in the political life of the nation and continuing to link the authority of the monarchy with that of something that is merely a historical shadow without living realitywould, I think, be very dangerous. The monarchy is a modern as well as an ancient institution, and balancing these two aspects is what has enabled it to survive. I don’t mean this cynically, but rather as keeping the roots but pruning that which is no longer fruitful to allow new growth.

I think the magic and mystique of monarchy as a symbol of neutrality would be much better served by retaining lots of the marvellous medieval customs that appeal so much to visitors and people interested in the past/ history because too much trying to be all things to all people often ends up pleasing nobody at all. It suddenly dawned on me one day that a ball and a stick are an orb and sceptre, the symbols of royal authority!

I know the robes and other vestments are heavy and she was the same size as I am. I know I couldn’t do it. Now a 75 year old steps up to assume the job he was born for, these vestments and regalia will weigh heavy on him both literally and figuratively. Presumably, any resizing of the two crowns for the new monarch is performed by adding or removing padding within the ermine band of the integral 'cap of maintenance'? It must be impossible actually to change the circumference of the metal bands of the crowns themselves (or am I missing something obvious)? Many thanks again for these truly fascinating presentations! One thing that I've come to realize is that the coronation chair faces the high altar and not (as I'd come to presume from film of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II) the nave.

    • @allanbarton
      @allanbarton  Рік тому +2

      The 1937 imperial crown will need to be expanded, the band was made smaller for the late Queen - it is not too much bother to do as the frame is made of platinum and is constructed primarily of settings and very little solid material. They are all working items and they are often resized. St Edward's crown was resized in 1911 and lost eleven ounces in weight from the band. Yes the chair faces the altar, it has never faced the people - so that the sovereign can focus keep their eyes on the altar and on the sacrament reserved there.

      @@allanbarton Thank you for confirming these facts for me. I was just watching your video on St Edward's crown and heard you mention about its resizing in 1911. I also noted from your excellent illustrations of coronations past that very few of the peers (including those in the front rows of the transept and nave, and those 'in the gods' [no pun intended]) were able to see much at all of the ceremony, as the coronation chair was positioned clase to the high altar and its back concealed almost everything occurring once the monarch was seated!

    • @a24-45
      @a24-45 Рік тому

      The enamel ones would undoubtedly have been too big for Q Elisabeth as they had been made for a man. They can't be resized without fully remaking them. I wear a lot of cuff bangles but they get caught up with long sleeves and anyway long sleeves hide them, as we see in paintings and photos of coronations of previous kings, so armills are wasted when worn with modern mens' clothing.
