  • Canoeing on the sea: A trip to Ynys Enlli / Bardsey Island We hit it in easy conditions, taking advantage of a neap tide and a low wind forecast. Don't underestimate this place. I have been there on a spring tide, in a sea kayak and it becomes awesome. A total of 29km (18 miles) travelled.
    I was paddling with the amazing Luke McNair: he makes all his own paddles, has in the past built his own canoe and plays the violin (not all at the same time).
    Loads of information on Ynys Enlli/Bardsey on the Trust's website. You can even rent a cottage on the island! Fantastic for birds with 20,000 Manx Shearwaters nesting there and even a the possibility that Puffins are coming back to the island. Of course Atlantic Grey Seals, some 200 of them. www.bardsey.org

    On a very low tide, we can see light from that lighthouse from Aberporth in West Wales.
    Thank you for the fun video.

    Thank you. I've been looking at this trip for a while but have been put off by the currents.
    I use reasonably quick SOT kayaks ("quick" compared to most SOT kayaks) about 15 to 17 feet long, so can be slightly braver than if I'm in a canoe.
    I followed your puffin island trip. Launched from the beach next to the light house and added in Tan Dinas quarry.
    It will take some planning, I think I will take my VHF and tell the coast guard, but that vid has given me the confidence to start planning.
    Thanks again.

      I am glad that the Puffin Island account was useful. Bardsey is a very different kettle of fish. It feels far more remote and there is a lot less boat traffic. Yep the VHF is a good idea but I carry a PLB (Personal Location Beacon) at all times on the sea: one of the best bits of kit out there. Choose your day well with a neap tide and low winds and it is a joy. Have fun and thanks very much for commenting.

    Greetings Ray, this was a splendid trip that was organised very well. The only experience I had of sea canoeing was off the coast of the Mull of Kintyre and Isle of Arran...it was a totally different experience.

    • @RayGoodwinCanoe
      @RayGoodwinCanoe  4 місяці тому

      Yep it can kick off around the Mull or Kintyre and Arran but on a bad/big day Bardsey can be far bigger and rougher. On a Spring tide it can reach 8 knots and that coupled with a storm makes it hell on water. We waited a long time for the right day. It is a wonder place.

    very well done, so many people neglect the planning when going out too sea so I'm glad to see you reminding people of all the variables you need to plan for and take into account.

      Thank you Carlos. Yep understanding and planning are the key. My understanding largely comes from my sea kayaking days which is safer craft on the sea, or at least has a greater margin to cope with error and difficult conditions

    Fantastic Ray, a lot of planning for a great paddle. Ray when you’re kneeling are you sitting on the thwart or resting on it with weight on your knees or 50/50 bum to knees ratio.

    • @RayGoodwinCanoe
      @RayGoodwinCanoe  9 місяців тому

      In easy conditions trying to get as much weight on my bum as possible. I put much more pressure on my knees in rough conditions as it lowered the body weight and makes a better connection with the canoe. Yep it was a great paddle.

    Shows it can be done Ray... 'On a very, very easy day'. Never in the canadian for me, but once in a Dancer. Many occations in the sea kayak of course. Great trip!

    • @RayGoodwinCanoe
      @RayGoodwinCanoe  9 місяців тому

      As ever it's waiting for that opportunity. I have been there on a spring tide when it was kicking off and it's very impressive! Yep a Dancer would have been a hard slog. Keep well fella.

    • @grahamrowe6278
      @grahamrowe6278 9 місяців тому

      Naaaaa, no slog. We did what you did. We had the conditions and tide in our pocket and executed the plan. (I have turned and ran a couple of times mind!)@@RayGoodwinCanoe

    • @RayGoodwinCanoe
      @RayGoodwinCanoe  9 місяців тому

      Always great when the plan works. I had to turn back once when thick fog enveloped the island. It was clear on the Llyn but as we moved into the sound the fog came down. It was a spring tide and my first attempt to go to Bardsey so really did need the visibility.

    We sat along with my daughter (7) to watch your trip. Thoughtful planning and the beautiful scenery. Thanks for sharing! One question my daughter was asking again and again though: why Luke was always paddling ahead of you, Ray?

    • @RayGoodwinCanoe
      @RayGoodwinCanoe  9 місяців тому +1

      Thank you. Part was me playing with camera gear. The other bit is that Luke is 29 years old, I am 70: slowing down a bit. Plus Luke was worried that if I caught up I would ask for more macaroons
