Nicely done. I like your inventiveness. The scene reminds me a lot of Johnstown. ! Watching you is like watching a less-relaxed Bob Ross with a Pa. accent!
Another awesome vid. Yep, those 25lb dumbbells look tiny compared to my 50s that I use for finger curls. I learn a lot from each of your videos. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Like the way it turned out, I almost wish I wasn't modeling desert in SoCal....thanks for sharing....Jack going to look up the video on Scultmold too....
DJ, Clump scenery material in a bowl with white glue, I never thought of that, brilliant :-) I'm looking forward to that video as I still have a hillside to do on my layout and I've been doing it the old fashioned way of gluing individual pieces to the hillside, very time consuming. Your method looks great and probably took a quarter of the time I've already invested in the one hillside. Cheers, Rich S.
I'm just entering this hobby, and I definitely prefer to build my scenery as opposed to buying it. This was a cool little film that was impressive and informative simultaneously. Good job.
Hi Dj, if you going to use plastercloth try finding it online at a medical store, waaaay more cheaper than rhe woodland scenics stuff and its c ompletely the same. Dont get me wrong, I love Woodland, but I find it here in Holland rather exspensive so I ordered at a medical store, two rols 4" wide and 20ft on a rol for just under 4 dollar I pay at least triple that ammount for the woodland scenics stuff, sorry to Woodland Scenics, but in Europe its quit exspensive. And that goes for Evergreen stuff the same.
Great video as usual, can't wait to see how you made the clump folage. Thanks so much for sharing. Haven't seen you at the train shows lately. Must just missing each other.... Wilmer-IHVRR
Great video! Most channels (including mine) would have milked that process over 10 videos. You did it in 10 minutes. Looks great. You’ve given me some ideas. I’ll have to find some lighter weights though. ;) -Mark
I struggled to keep it at 10 minutes. My goal is under 8. I would have liked to have included the foliage video, but that will be about 6 minutes itself.
Interesting technique DJ. Have you changed your method in the last 4 years. I am viewing your videos in time (oldest to newest) so if you did an update I will see it.
Hi DJ! I watched you add the thin glue mix to the loose gravel. I've tried this technique for years now, and everytime my work dries, the gravel is always a darker color, looking like rain just fell, and not a dusted, dry look. Is there a way to avoid the darker color when it dries?
I didn't notice it with gravel, but I noticed it with fine dirt sometimes. Thats a good question, that to be honest, I don't know yet. If you find out, let me know. I have tried sand, and that didn't work well because it sparkled.
Hi DJ. Thank you for your response. Yes. I will certainly let you know if I discover any techniques that can be used to make this better. Have a good day!
Michael Diehl, hey mate, try brushing the gravel with an earth colour, either yellow or burnt sienna pastel. Crush up the pastel to a powder and use it to lightly brush the gravel. I got this idea from a great Australian modeller Luke Towan (he mainly does great tutorials on dioramas for scenery). Check out his vids, you'll get some great ideas. Cheers
Well done. Nice video. Would you have a video on making pine trees? I need to make 4 to 5 hundred of them (maybe more). I am building a large mountain road and have a lot of real estate to bring to life with trees in the areas that are below the tree line. Thanks. Philip
Nice video, DJ! I like that clump foliage idea. I'm all for cheap! For gluing extruded foam, I used to use Liquid Nails for Projects. It took a long time to dry, and I just wasn't real thrilled with it. Then I saw this video: ua-cam.com/video/rnOegaOKu38/v-deo.html She did test on various adhesives for foam, and Glidden Gripper primer paint was declared the winner. I bought some, used it, and I will never go back to LNfP! This stuff works! A thin coat between layers, and when it dries you will destroy the foam trying to get it apart! I got mine at Menards, but it's available all over everywhere. Give it a try!
I have no control over the ads. No one does. It’s all based upon google who owns UA-cam, not creators. What sucks is I have videos that aren’t monetized but UA-cam still runs ads in the middle of a video and it ruins the flow
That turned out really well. Amazing how simple techniques like this can make something that looks absolutely believable. Thanks for sharing this.
your foliage looks great! I like the addition of the rock slide. youre right those details give a good story
Another great video! Great tips/techniques! Very nice looking hill side.
Glad you liked it!
What a great job of adding background scenery....looking forward to your video of how you created the clump scenery

HA!
Good to see another djstrains video. Thanks for doing them.
More to come....!!!
Nice ideas. Good to see more by you again.
I'm still averaging a video a month. I feel youtube sometimes hides my videos or promotes others better, and mine gets lost.
Excellent video - the finished scene looks great!

LMAO!
The clump foliage idea is really good, Thanks DJ.
i just uploaded the how to video on it.
Sculptamould mixed with color sounds like a good idea ! IF it cracks the white color wont show... looks great.
Thanks for the video !
Awesome video dude thanks Dj
Turned out very well. Nice depth.
awesome screen name! MST3K!!

That worked well. Nice job! 😃👍

So false rumor you ran away with your engine traveling over tracks, lol.. great to see another informative tutorial video. Thanks
What? This makes no sense.
Video is September 2018
Joking since hadn’t seen a video in awhile is all. Enjoyed recent video
Hmm, just showed up today to view. It’s ok, sorry for confusion

Good job.
I organized my videos into PLAYLISTS. Look for SCENERY. Thanks!!
@@djstrains Right on, I'm liking what I see on here so far, broad scope of information on this hobby, excellent advice.
Outstanding.

DJ, for added texture would you consider sprinkling fine ground foam to your homemade foam, while still wet, after applying it to the hillside?
I blend stuff all the time. Blending helps get the right color especially when I need to tone down a bright color.
HES ALIVE!!!!!! DJS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!
The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated lol
hey DJ, how do I paint backdrops?

I am always trying new things. In fact, this new stuff I am using (not on video) is kinda wild. Its like poodle fur, lol, but works.

I don't have a technique for that. I bought a bag of them in bulk at a hobby store last year. Maybe someone reading can help.
