Derek Roddy’s here to teach you how to develop foot speed by using blast beats while alternating your feet! The usual advice with building speed is to start slow and work your way up, but Derek recommends starting around your comfort zone and keep pushing the tempo up.

Great exercise! Derek is such an inspiration to me. I've been learning from his tutorials, DVDs and books ever since I started to get into metal. If you are patient and don't give up you get great results! Too bad that I'm too lazy now to do this for long periods. But back in the day when I practiced this exercises everyday, the results where truly worth it.

I love Derek but he is clearly not using hip flexors until he does double strokes. Unless he is just referring to the the double strokes. He even says it looks like ankle motion. That's because it is. He's not doing a flat foot technique, instead using heel up technique. I felt necessary to point this out for anyone trying to emulate. This is just an edit of a longer Drumeo video with Derek. Better to check that one out.

when it comes to double pedal speed I'm bad cause I can't really control my left leg, I think I need to exercise
AVE drums Same here. When I try to play fast with my left leg I get really bad cramps and my leg becomes totally stiff and unable to play. I guess I should also exercise and start slow instead of jumping directly into the fast tempos.
yes indeed, it's hard for me to do a good double pedal tempo, cuz it starts to get sloppy and out of time really fast
AVE drums funny enough, I'm right handed and my left can go forever and my right side sucks. been battling the issue for years. I finally got me a practice pad for my pedals and emphasizing control, balance and not so much speed, that'll come

I have a really good exercise for you that did wonders for me. Jumping rope !!!! But not just normal jumping. Each jump is only done with one foot. The catch is , you have to use rudiments on the feet to jump .....for example a double stroke. R jump R jump L jump L jump.........

absolutely. however I find it more possible to think as if the trigger is off, hence the genre itself almost fundamentally demands the usage of triggers
It's kind of funny how you're artificially creating new content by taking clips from 1+ hour videos you could watch for free anyways and posting them as if they were brand new.
But if you think of it, makes sense. Not everyone wants to watch 1+hour videos. For someone just looking randomly for bass drum speed would miss this great lesson because it won't show up in the search since it's part of that big lesson. Now that they separate the topics they are able to deliver shorter videos for people looking for specific things. And it does actually benefit viewers more than anything else. :) Of course hopefully they make some good ad money from it too but for the quality of content they put out it's a fair trade.
