This is a Motormouth couple car review of the updated 2023 Lexus UX hybrid subcompact crossover. The UX has a 2L 4-cylinder engine with Lexus Hybrid Drive and an ECVT, it has a combined 181 horsepower. In Canada, standard electronic on demand AWD and in the US, FWD and AWD options are available on all trims. There is no longer a UX gas model available.
Lexus has made changes to the UX Hybrid to give it a more refined driving experience with steering response updates, improved handling stability and a reduction in cabin noise. The F Sport trims bring sportier design elements to the exterior and interior and the F Sport Handling package in the US, F Sport series 1 and 2 in Canada add standard performance dampers and an active variable suspension to sharpen handling and improve overall ride quality.
Although the Lexus UX hybrid is a small crossover, it has quite a bold style with the Lexus spindle grille, flared fenders, standard bi-beam headlamps, available triple beam LED headlamps, chrome exterior accents, rear combination lamps connected by a continuous single line of 120 LED lights, roof rails, 18” wheels and run flat tires. The UX offers 6.3” of ground
clearance.
Our test model is the F Sport Design Lexus UX Hybrid, it gets the sportier exterior design elements including, an F sport grille, F Sport wheels, a black roof and F Sport badging.
There are some nice changes to the interior, gone is the touchpad making the infotainment system much easier to use. The Lexus UX gets the all-new Lexus interface including an 8” touchscreen, available 12.3” touchscreen and wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
Fuel economy is 5.7L/100 km, 41 MPG city and 6.2L/100 km, 38 MPG highway.
There are plenty of trims to choose from, in Canada, it starts at $41,450 CAD, F Sport Design $43,100, Elegance Special Edition $43,250, F Sport Series 1 $44,850, Luxury $46,200 and F Sport Series 2 $50,950.
In the US, FWD $35,925 USD, AWD $37,325, Premium FWD $38,385, AWD $39,785, F Sport Design FWD $38,385, AWD $39,785, F Sport Handling FWD $43,355 and AWD $44,755.

My wife got a US market UX250H Premium AWD in October. It's been perfect for her 2 hour round trip commute, delivering 40 mpg through a New England winter.
We don't have kids, so the small size isn't an issue. My 2010 Fit (her old car) has far more cargo space, but the luxury of the UX is amazing. It's a proper small luxury car.
Definitely more of a hatchback than crossover. The styling is actually pretty attractive to me. The Nori Green pearl gets a ton of compliments.
It was $43k with dealership add-ons a la carte: optional black wheels, wireless charging, all weather mats and heated steering wheel.
Fantastic car so far. I'm super impressed with it.
This is the perfect car for me. I currently have the RX350 and it has served me well for a decade. I test drove the UXH on a snowy day in Ottawa and it handled really well. Love the upgrades that I will get with the Luxury package. The UXH are made in Japan. As an empty nester soon, I don’t have to worry so much about the back seats and we have two cars. I ordered mine in nori green! I should get it on time for my birthday this summer ❤ Thank-you for the great review.
We bought the 2022 Lexus UX250h and absolutely LOVE it, including the trackpad. That said, I would have liked the new touchscreen and wireless Apple car play in the 2023. Interesting fact: In the summer we got 5.3L/100km but now in winter it’s more like 6.4L/100 km. It averages around 5.7L/100 km. Great car!!!!
Fantastic fuel economy, I think this a great crossover, I really enjoyed it.
@@andreaspencer9813 Kinfa cramped though like CX30 compared to crossovers of with similar length in size like the Crosstrek.
How's the pick-up speed for freeway entry? Any regrets?
Great vid guys, love the snow shots.
Many thanks for this Canadian review. We are going to test drive the UX this morning in Toronto.
Another Lexus review... awesome video and review Andrea and Zack!
Thanks for watching!
Love watching you guys driving in the snow ❄️ We had the same winter wonderland here on the island last week too! I'm not in the market for a Lexus, but I still love watching your videos. I might be in the market for one in the future, so all of the specs and info you gave in your review helped to educate me for a possible future purchase. Happy New Year! 🎉
That's so good to hear, thank you, glad you enjoyed the review. Happy New Year, all the best in 2023.
Zack, you nailed the demographic for this car. Props also for _finally_ putting up a review in Canadian winter weather!
You're right, this car is for the folks that kids have all grown up and out of the house. That's why we bought this little gem.
Good review as always. Detailed and to the point.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
*great review as always , do you know how long the wait time is for factory ordering a 2023 UX250h base model here in Canada?* thanks
I love this little buggy, thinking of buying one for my beater second car. Like your Rolex Andrea!
So true on the piano black finishes on vehicles today.
Impossible to keep scratch free.
I drove a used 2020 UX and a new 2023 UX hybrid. The difference is remarkable. The 2023 is better in every sense - quieter, a bit more powerful, more comfortable, better entertainment system, etc. But I'm leaning toward the NX hybrid. While I could make due with the limited space in the UX, the NX price was only $5-7k more and met all my needs. If I'm going to pay all that money for a Lexus I don't want to regret the lack of space when I try to put something fairly large in the back.
i'm having the same thoughts. thanks for your comment
5-7k is a huge difference
Love your channel. Still waiting for Any mention of the various cars Audio systems. A few things on each would be nice 🤷♂️🤔
Really great review! I like when you are both reviewing the car. Because I can see two different points of view. I think this 2023 UX is almost flawless for a single City driving with an updated infotainment. Only thing what I don't like is its back-end look from a side. The side line leading towards rear light makes the rear looks somehow weird, too much angles perhaps. I wish it would look more like the new NX. Other than that perfect small car
I’ve had this car for about 3 months now and I’m very happy with it so far. Handles well in the snow even with just the all seasons tires. Not very powerful, but who needs power in Manitoba’s highways?
We definitely have a large snowstorm in Vancouver this year. UX hybrid is a perfect vehicle for this kind of weather. Its proven to be reliable, efficient, comfortable and, best of all, its compact, which means it suits most people's needs with the wants of the prestige Lexus badge. If only Toyota and Lexus hybrid's waiting lists aren't so lengthy.
Reliability has nothing to do with the weather. Its all about how well the AWD can cope and what kind of tyres you have. Given its vancouver, more than half of the people have no clue what winter tyres are.
I love lexus, such an amazing brand. The NX is really sharp.
I'm curious to see what Lexus will do with the new Prius platform with this in a couple of years. I've had this as a loaner often and I love it... but yeah, rear space is too limited for me to buy one now. Let's wait and see
I typically go snowboarding twice a year with similar conditions posted on your video with slight incline. Do you think the UX250H equipped with Snow Tires would be a good vehicle for snowboarding trips?
Finally a non black interior. I would get this in green.
I hope that when they release a new UX model (assuming they will make a second gen), they will have a plug in hybrid version and slightly increased interior size but don’t need it so much that it becomes a NX. Otherwise I’m pretty happy with my 2023 ux.
I had a ‘23 UXh as a loaner while my 2022 Nx was getting its windshield replaced.
I’m in south Florida and I was getting 46mpg while driving it the same way as my 2022 Lexus NX250 (same engine as the hybrid NX, without the battery). My NX I got 32mpg.
The handling in the UXh is superb. The base speakers in the NX is way better than the base Ux speakers. I also adjusted the speaker’s settings too.
The UXH is way smoother than the NX. I don’t know if it’s because the NX has run flats.
The steering in the UX is way sportier. It’s heavy like it should be and the acceleration is quite punchy (more than my nx250, but I bet the nx350h is punchy too with the electric motor).
And yes, the drone is VERY quiet unless you’re flooring it. I used to have a ‘21 Prius and the Ux is a MAJOR improvement. I wish I drove the ‘23 Prius to compare to the ‘21.
The brake feel is really good in the UX and you feel less potholes in it too.
The one thing I didn’t like about the UXh is it doesn’t come with auto dimming rear view mirror standard, it’s an option. My NX had it standard and to be honest I don’t think I can ever go back to non-auto dim.
The cabin noise is very good too. It’s similarly quiet as my NX.
One thing I liked too is that the wireless apple CarPlay in the Ux is significantly better than the NX’s I have. I’m not sure if they improved it in the ‘23 NX, but my ‘22 always has issues connecting to my phone. The one week of driving the UX it never gave me an issue meanwhile my NX kept giving me issues daily. I always had to hold down the audio knob to do a hard restart for the apple CarPlay to maybe work the second time. The Ux worked every single time!!!
After driving the UXh I might get the ‘23 Prius prime. I was super upset handing the UXh back. I really missed Toyota’s hybrid system. It’s very refined with the ecvt, meanwhile the 8 speed is WAY too unrefined.
But like I said, I was shocked of the mpg of the UXh. very similar to a Prius….
Nice review! I have a 23 UX hybrid loaner now and love it! Quiet, smooth and getting 42 mpg on regular gas. Wow!
@@MrMustangrick I find the seats so much more comfortable than the NX too. I can’t believe how comfortable that thing is
@@Alec15000 Yes way more comfortable than my Lexus GS F V8 monster! And the difference in gas mileage..........
Agreed, a hatchback. A used Honda Fit has a bigger trunk. Nice rig all the same.
How’s the heater on the car? I think that is important during winter snow.
You know what? For once, Vancouver has more snow than us here in New Brunswick!! Season's Greetings!
Thanks for comparing the UX with the Prius. It’s a shame Toyota took all the value away with the new Prius pricing in Canada.
When the chip shortage is sorted, I am guessing Toyota will bring in some cheaper trims.
Go Lexus
Better than the price of stupid overrated useless Iphone in my opinion.
I believe the XC 40 is now a mild hybrid for 2022. Not as efficient but they look to be the UX best direct competitor. Love the balanced information you two provide in describing the vehicle offerings. Great review as usual!
I’m actually deciding between XC40 and the Lexus UX250h
I just find the UX offers great reliability and better fuel economy but I can’t get over how small the car is !!!!! What does everyone think??
Volvo over Lexus? China over Japan? NO WAY. Kung Flu!
Volvo XC 40 is built in Belgium.
@@richardmichael59 ...and is owned by the Chinese. No thanks.

So is your TV, refrigerator and so many other items.
How does the 2023 NX350h compare with UX250h? I tried UX and love the drive! Really smooth. And saves me on gas expenses. Now I'm not sure if I need to change to NX because of the size. I have 2 kids. Will NX350h be the same?
Andrea and Zack - I've been pondering your segment: Questions, Coffee, Cars -- you need a paid segment sponsor. Your channel is very professional and likeable. Its a no brainer for them to sponsor this part of the show.
Thank you very much, we are working on it, just need the right fit.
My only reservation is I have never driven a car with Run Flat Tires. They cost more when needed to be replaced (non-issue) but how do they handle on the highway for say a summer vacation trip. Winter tires would be a must in Ontario for sure.
besides the speed limit on the eAWD, I wonder if this year model is using the upgraded motor that the new prius will be using
Looking to finally upgrade my 15 YO Honda Fit (over 250K) for a daily commuter and young kid-toter (also have a van). Seems like a perfect upgrade for great gas mileage, plus some significant upgrades and great reliability.
Will definitely test drive this weekend.
So I test drove it today.
Super underwhelmed. Terrible visibility, meh acceleration and handling, horrific backseat space, terrible trunk space.
Hated it.
Hello Zach and Andrea,
I truly enjoy your reviews, and wanted to add a bit of a family-with-kids perspective, prompted by your 2022 Prius and UX comparison.
When fully using the second row and travelling to some warm place like Okanagan, the vent in the front row armrest (centre console), that serves the second row, becomes critically important for proper AC ventilation or warming in colder weather. If the vent in the centre console is missing, the entire second row lacks adequate comfort. This is commonly omitted as the second row is rarely tested.
So the 2023 Prius does lack the centre console vent (similarly to my 2014 Prius) - that is highly noticeable by the second row occupants in both hot and cold weather.
The 2023 UX does have the vent, but no useable room at the second row.
So from the family-with-kids perspective for any extended distance in cold or hot climate - very unfortunately none is suitable, IMHO.
When I went from 2014 Prius to 2021 RAV4 Prime one of the most important features was the vent in the centre console for the comfort of the second row passengers.
Having a family like yourself I totally agree. We've often wondered why in 2023 more vehicles don't have that very important feature. PLUS reviews usually ignore that feature but I think it's way too important to ever ignore it.
13:53 that’s a huge improvement, my 17 RAV4 hybrid only has eAWD up to 30 km/hr 😂
Not bad! But It’s need more space in the back! For example backseat, what if you take your friends somewhere and unfortunately it’s too small there! Great beautiful video to see the snow. Cheers! ☕️☕️
Yes, it's best for a couple or a single person who don't take a lot of passengers with them. It was fun filming in the snow, we rarely get any.
@@andreaspencer9813 👍🏻👍🏻
How does the trunk length compare with the Porsche Macan, both with the rear seats down and up?
I owned this UX Hyrbrid for about a year and eventually I traded it in for a Preowned gas powered NX simply because of the tight rear seats. I am 5"11' and got annoyed by the tight space
13:48 - The 'AWD' here is more accurately (and honestly) described as an 'assist' and - as mentioned in the review - is not always on.
Yes, it moves off the line, but is essentially a "slip 'n grip" system, where the front wheels spin for a bit before the read electric assist kicks in (which you can see every time the car pulled away from a stop 2:32, 2:44, 3:36).
Engine oil: 0W-16 and I just stocked up some 0W-20 from costco due to on sale. Previously not all costco stock up 0w-20, and now I don't even think costco has 0W-16. So buying 0W-16 with retail price in bulk can be more pricy compared to 0W-20 wholesale, since insurance averaged people to drive 12k miles annually which equivalent to 2 oil change at 5k interval.
Going to have to give this UX some consideration, right now the new Prius is on top of my list. I wish they did a better job with the rear end styling, it doesn't really flow with the rest of the car to me. Other than that, a really nice package all together.
Getting out. I had to trade in my 2017 Ford Fusion Platinum with low profile tires, because getting out of it caused my wife a lot of pain. Her rehab person told her that he tells people with her problem to get a minivan or SUV. We leased a Venza. Perfect in/out. Could you comment on ease of getting out of the UX. I don’t think ground clearance is a good measure.
I have a 8 year old ct and one thing they dont tell you is the cost to own. My CT has had all recommended oil changes at the dealer_full synthetic with wash and vac for just under $100. front brake pads were also replaced. Thats it! lets see the service bills on the Audi BMW or Mercedes for 8 years of dealer service. Still averaging 43.8MPG
The wheel guards are painted instead of black on the 2022 model?
When do you think you will review the 2025 Lexus Ux 300h?
Would a Crosstrek limited compare to a NX or UX?
would this be a good car to uber/uber eats with for someone that wants a step up from Toyota/honda?

I got new ux2023 it’s best car guys believe me best in everything.
Why is it still slippery if this Canadian version of UX already hv All wheel drive standard? e4WD hv a delay kick in?
I like the UX styling inside and out better than the new Nx, and much lower price.
My wife is only 5ft tall and our child is still an infant. This looks like an amazing car for that situation. Better insulation and quality over the Toyota alternates with the same reliability and hybrid efficiency. With the better infotainment, I think Lexus knocked it out of the park with this new refresh. The rear LED is also amazing looking.
I really like this UX as well, the drive is so much better, much more refined now.
Hope it’s a second car. Infants are small but rear facing seats are not let alone strollers and such.
@Ryan Yes a car seat will be tight but we do have another follower with children who put a car seat back there. I guess it's doable.
What the other makes don't have, is reliability.
I test drove it the other day. It is basically a 2 person car. Rear seats are nearly useless. The cargo space is very small too.
I already have 6 toyota, now i check the UX as my second car. The first One is Venza 2021 and want Lexus. If you consider UX as second that is good idea but not for the first or only car !
Great review guys 😊 I really love Lexus taking the trackpad away which was causing too much looking down and perhaps the worst thing about driving right … head up and easier to keep your eyes on the road with it in the screen … luv the piano black gone also … may have to revisit this Lexus again 👏👍
My Lexus dealer is telling me that if you are above 69km and the car senses slippage say on a very snowy road the four wheel drive kicks in do you concur ?
2023 Lexus UX250h vs 2024 Corolla Cross hybrid - thinking to get Lexus for around $35000 thoughts ???
You guys are dressed lightly for a snowy day stay warm guys 🥰
Love the comparisons with the Venza? I have a 21 Venza Limited and at the time, I didn’t consider the UX or NX. That being said, living with the Venza for 17 months and 17K miles, the lack of a opening sunroof, antiquated navigation and screen resolution, the cheapness of materials and the constant drone of the ECVT is driving me nuts. If I were to choose now, I’d go with the new version of the NX. The Venza is ok just stay away from the Limited which is overpriced IMO. I’m waiting to see and drive the new Mazdas CX90 and CX70 when available.
UX is just way to small on the inside. Rear seats are way too cramped and cargo space is laughable. This is basically a sub compact hatchback while Venza is more midsized cuv.
If I were you I would look into the new ‘23 Prius. It has the same 2.0L engine and much improved power. It’s more powerful than the UXh and has better AWD from what I hear. For the $34k limited Prius it has ventilated seats, electric rear door, JBL, massive 12” display. It also has a lot of horse power now and goes 0-60 in like 7 seconds which is impressive considering it gets 54mpg. Usually you sacrifice mpg for power, but no more!

I tested a 2021 UX 250H this past Saturday and no memory seating =(. In California, we get Premium, F Sport Design, F Sport handling package trims.
I thought Lexus ceased to use the Lexus emblem in the rear but now they reuse it in the 2023 model
Two suggestions. Establish a clown focus score for each auto. And bring back night life. Happy New Year!
I’m actually deciding between XC40 and the Lexus UX250h
I just find the UX offers great reliability and better fuel economy but I can’t get over how small the car is !!!! What would you pick??
UX Hybrid
Sounds like a great model , albeit pricey city car for those who normally do not need the rear seat. I'm with Zack; I'd call it a hatch. The lift over in hatch area seems rather high. I would love to see more manufacturers offer a la carte options like in 60s when one could really "customize" their factory order.
The practical frugal type (moi) would not opt for a Lexus or German brand runabout. If I were purchasing a "city" small hybrid this year, the Niro LX would be 1st on my list. More room, almost 20% better mpg, warranty twice as long, lots of lux features, and price for base model is ~ 10K USD less. Only thing missing on the Kia is AWD -- of course if you can afford a hybrid city car, you probably have AWD something else. You loose a lot when opting for the Lexus badge.
Definitely the Prius XLE AWD. The rear seat space in the UX is too tight
How can a car this big on the outside be this small inside?! I had a Renault that was 50 cm shorter, had 2 times the luggage space as a 5 seater AND had 7 seats if I wanted to (with still some space for suitcases left). My Golf has a bigger boot too, despite being 25 cm shorter and 10 cm lower.
Does the Hybrid would work im MB. -35C in the winter for several days?
Yes
I am in MB and own this car in a previous model year. It’s great and have never has any issues.
Like the look of the UX except for the regular use display. Looking at a car in 2026 and i hope they change it back to an integrated display much like the camry etc. that does not stick out like a sore thumb.
I was interested in it but having the same MPG as an NX350H it was hard to justify for a smaller vehicle plus 181 hp vs 239hp in an NX.

The smaller infotainment screen looks terrible in Lexus models. Good for Lexus to make the hybrid standard across the UX line up for 2023 but there's no denying that it's just completely behind pretty much anything in the subcompact luxury crossover space...
Love the UX hybrid. In fact that’s will be the car or maybe a Mazda CX30, I will buy my daughter when she goes to college.
I don’t know why car manufacturers make back seats that small? I’d give up hatch room for a bigger back seat. Also the infotainment system for the price is underwhelming. I think the best is once screen across like KIA or Mercedes are doing.
Its not a sub compact, its a mid sized SUV.
It has a lot of power at 181 BHP. 0-60 in 7 seconds is quick and with 54MPG its great.
The boot level is high. Take away the floor, then the tray, then another tray and you get down to the spare wheel well! Oh its part filled with car stuff. Just a bit of storge space for your junk.
The base spec is pov so get the premium pack for £2,000 and the white mica pearl paint for £950.

There goes the myth that you get more room in a crossover vs. a sedan. The Prius has much more room in the back, at least legroom. I wish the Lexus had less of a shiny screen surround and the 8 inch screen looks terrible in such a big surround. Otherwise, it's nice. Still, the Prius looks modern and just more interesting inside and out. The Lexus is better but the Prius is much more stylish.
Lexus should have the heated seat & etc on the steering wheels or elsewhere instead on the center console.
It is no problem on the console. There are enough buttons on the wheel thank you.

I got a 2023 Toyota Venza Ltd instead of the UXh. It’s a cheaper, larger and more comfortable car with similar fuel economy. It also has a spare tire. This generational Venza is called the Harrier in Japan, which was sold in North America as the original Lexus RX until 2008.
Seems like the UX is the spiritual successor to the CT. Hatchback, Hybrid, Affordable for luxury.
Also Volvo XC40 is now only available as hybrid. So it is more comparable to the UX.
Still not sold on electrification until the infrastructure is set up to support it.
This UX, as is the case with the similarly-sized '23 Corolla Cross Hybrid are SELF-CHARGING HSD's, which DOESN'T REQUIRE YOU TO PLUG IN to charge the small (1.4 kWh) battery pack in this crossover. These can't run on just battery power, as it needs the ICE for propulsion.
OTOH, PHEV's, like the Rav4 Prime or NX450h+ do require to plug in to charge the much larger (no more than 20 kWh) battery pack and can run on just battery power for awhile.
it's a hybrid 😂 you don't plug it in
@@mikej238 - there are Hybrids you plug in, like the Rav4 Prime and the NX450h+, but not this UX or the similarly-sized Corolla Cross Hybrid.
@@syxepop duh ....this isn't a PHEV
I was referring to electrification in general. Having an EV or PHEV in areas of cold weather is not very good also in wide open parts of Canada finding charging station is a crap shoot at best. So yes a hybrid may be a good alternative but not even talking about the carbon footprint for manufacturing and recycling of the batteries.
The chick has a perfect TV evangelical smile
Why would anyone buy Prius over the UXH?
Exactly
that money buys a real nice rav4
Ignore the badge for a second, is this a better buy than a fully loaded Kia Seltos ?
Smaller
You do know the badge isnt just marketing right? The quality of the interior, addedinsulation, and overall refinement is where your money goes.
@@sanzserif the added insulation is a plus but for a city sub/compact car, it may not be a big deal for some. As for the interior quality, piano black plastic vs satin less shiny plastic, still plastic. My biggest issue though is the space in back; almost no leg room. Why bother with the rear doors!?
The price of this UX is the same as the GLA and X1 because all the Lexus dealers are charging “Market Value.” This causing this car to become to expensive.
no they aren't, I paid msrp
I'd believe if there was a Lexus model dealer would be less wanting to mark up their profits it'd be the UX, as is NOT AS DESIREABLE as an NX. More probable to get a UX at MSRP or close to it.

Main advantage of this over the Prius 2023 is that you can sit higher.....I can't believe the Prius is better than this Lexus.
The Lexus is Japanese built Don the gap between Lexus and Toyota is greater in the LHD North American market.
Zack and Andrea, I think we now got a problem with the '23 UX as it goes HSD-only, like several other Toyota-made products.
The US-made '23 Corolla Cross Hybrid is basically the same vehicle (within 1" / 25mm in every stat) as the Japan-made UX250h (figure the equipment and assembly craftsmanship differences). But now the Toyota makes 16 MORE HP using the same 2.0L HSD combo than the Lexus, while being quite a bit less expensive (again, accounting for the differences between a model from a mainstream brand and from a luxury brand).
Wonder how Lexus will now justify "the extra coin" for their UX. Sounds like this subcompact luxury crossover won't be available for much longer (maybe waiting for a "new CT" to replace the UX?).
