If you don't eat, you'll eventually die. Food is important, and it's delicious, so in this video I eat a bunch of survival food. Mountain House isn't really 'survival food' - it's more geared at backpackers, etc, BUT it has a 25 year shelf-life, so it's a great thing to store for a rainy day. Not saying the world's gonna end - but in the event of any type of disaster/crisis, it'd be good to have plenty on hand. I also like keeping some Mountain House handy in case something happens with my camping food - I can always fall back on a bag of the good stuff.

Cutting the Mountain House meals down with rice or beans is a great idea. I would probably add some Uncle Ben's parboiled rice packets for each Mountain House meal since you can just pour it right in and add water. I believe Uncle Ben's rice is pretty cheap so it'll help add calories and meals for not much extra. You can turn a $10 Mountain House Meal for one person and add $1 of rice and turn it into a meal for two people for $11.

Mr2 Reviews If you’re keep MHM as emergency food, that’s a good idea. But they’re kinda expensive for that. I’d rather keep canned food for emergencies. MHM are great for lightweight hiking and bugout bags.

There’s very little to none of nutrition in white rice…it may fill your stomach but doesn’t feed your body….UNLESS. It’s Enriched rice…they that’s done with flour and ready to eat cereals…where a vitamin pack is dissolved in liquid and sprayed on the void stuff. In which case,,no one with gluten sensitivities can consume…because a gluten flour is used to make a sprayable stick to the food enrichment. Leads me to a question for this company…are any of your packaged foods gluten free..?

There shouldn’t be any preservatives or extremely minimal unwanted ingredients. This is because the food is freeze dried. It will inherently last 25+ years with the vast majority of its original nutritional profile undisturbed.

I agree with your recommendation of extending the Mountain House meals with other food items such as rice, veggies, and peppers etc. I have used Mountain House for many years and also find it far to salty for the average human. When I use Mountain House as well as other brands I add lots of water as well as other food item to extend the meal to 5 or 6 servings thereby lowering the salt content per serving. If you bring the right “no salt” spices you can turn the meals into anything you desire. Great video, thanks 👍👍👍👍👍

John daniel. Freeze dried food doesnt go bad. Their 30 year guarentee is not scam as they have had many test runs s with their food over 30 years. The 30 years Is the longest trial they have had and that is taste guarentee. Those things really never go bad short of the container being punctured.
As far as the conspiracy theory you hold, what solid evidence do you have that all of the companies listed are mormon. Secondly, what do you have against mormons? I'm not religious but you come off as some atheist douchebag. While I agree that a personal garden and livestock would be much better, not all of us can afford that and freeze drying is a very expensive process. Also what you stated is false about mountain house. They are from Oregon and they produce their products domestically. I cant tell you how much they're marked up, but I can say they are far better quality than any other brand I've tried and they are worth their weight in gold for a sort of disaster.

    Huge MH fan, here.
Back in 2009 during a permanent layoff, I survived on my MH stash for 6-8 weeks, restricting myself to one meal a day. Glad I saw the layoff coming months in advance and stocked up!
    Listen to your instincts, folks.

We also bring a couple jalapenos and a little hot sauce (usually the restaurant packets of Cholula). Cook it all up, mix it all together, split it up between the two of us... and voila... Enjoyed this! Was pleased to see your take on eating Mountian House for a week wasnt horendous. And that as a prepping food it's a solid or at least tolerable option. I've eaten Mountain House for backpacking but always wondered if it would work as a more long term sustainable food regiment. The weight savings for me is a plus. I've been wanting to put together a portable food storage cache to supplement the stored canned food that I have. Was thinking about using one of my big plastic water resistant husky tool bins with wheels and filling it with Mountain House meals and other light weight shelf stable food items. This way I'd have maybe a 50lb wheeled food bin ready to go for any reason.

It is my understanding that the reason why they're so salty is because they're meals intended for Backpackers. Backpacking all day you're working up a sweat and you got to have your electrolytes replenished etc.
In a grid down shtf scenario you're going to need to replenish your electrolytes when your rucking from one FEMA camp to the next.

I straight up love the beef stroganoff , its just so good, any time I am needing to bring a mountain house meal into the picture that is my first choice. the beef tastes like nicely cooked hamburger and the noodles and sauce are just right. I really dig it. I eat all 2.5 servings by myself no problem!!! most of the time for backpacking food I go for just regular stuff that comes in a bag and you add water and heat, many good soups, mashed potatoes ,noodle cups ect and they are cheap AF as opposed to these freeze dried "packpacker" specific type meals.and honestly they tend to taste better in my opinion. but yeah there are some good MH meals apparently, Ill have to try a few more after watching this.

I’ve JUST started looking into buying Mountain House for long term storage. I haven’t bought any yet but was curious what it would be like to eat this long term, especially since I eat really clean normally. It would have been interesting to hear more about how you felt after eating that for a solid week and what it did to your GI system. Still a great video! I am looking forward to the stove video as well! Appreciate your work!

Mountain house is really tasty. Be careful with some of the cleaner more healthy freeze dried meals. They tend to be bland so you may want to keep some seasoning for them. Get as much variety as you can. I keep lots of freeze dried food of all different brands. I poach from what I keep on hand to go backpacking and if I like it I replace it in my stored food and so on. Mountain house has been my favorite overall. But there is a catch. It will make it hard to have bowel movements. I try and drink 5 liters of water backpacking and have mountain house for breakfast and dinner and lunch I have high fiber bread with tuna. Even so I hardly ever need to take a #2. So if you plan on eating this as your go to during an emergency day after day I would also get the variety pack of freeze dried veggies. And keep things to add to your meals. Mountain house is light on veggies and fiber and you need lots of water to drink. Hope this helps.

Day 1 and 2 measures the water with Nalgene to ensure he gets it right, day 7 dumps some water in Meh its close enough... Good video, Mike. Thanks for taking the time to make these. I use camping food for hurricane prep food down here in Florida. Buy a bunch of it at the beginning of hurricane season, hopefully don't use any of it, and use it all winter for camping.... I use the add rice and beans to a meal trick to double or triple the volume... Alot of the meals have tons of flavor that can be watered down some.

Great video! Brave guy! In a crisis you probably wouldn't be eating 3 MH meals a day, you'd want to make your good, reasonably nutritious stuff last as long as possible. You could probably supplement your diet with fresh foraged items and maybe some other basic foods like oats/pasta/rice/canned bread etc. That way you'd still be eating pretty well, and not be consuming lethal amounts of salt/sodium. Being a prepper is a very comforting feeling, knowing that you (probably) will be able to survive most events . Makes me feel secure!

Old Italian Restaurant Trick. Cheese. Was utensils in cold water first until you can peel cheese off in large clumps. Then rewash in Hot Water to sterilize/clean utensils. Hot water just spreads cheese around.

Mountain house is owned by FDO foods, owned by Endeavor Capitol llc, who tried to take over zoom care + in 2015.
Isn’t it a coincidence that a company who owned a freeze dried food company tried to take over an online health care company BEFORE covid? And after covid, MH prices doubled or tripled. They sold out everything in a couple of weeks, including their year suppliers of food.

I lived off a wr250r for over a week on a camping trip this summer. Took a 3000 mile round-trip motorcycle trip and had all my meals with me the entire time. These meals are great for what they are. If you have access to water and can boil it you can eat a decent meal. I came home from my trip and continued to eat them for a few days lol. No GI issues whatsoever. Felt good afterwards. I will tell you from being in the military if you live off of MRE's for awhile you're going to have GI issues... Maybe the new MRE's are better though. I had no issues with Mountain House... only complaint is pasta premavera... need protein!

I would not worry about the sodium intake, unless you had a health condition that prohibits your sodium intake. I would not want to survive on these for several years. But I think for short periods of time, with lots of hydration they are one of the best choices for ready to eat food that requires minimal prep., and tastes pretty good. And like you mentioned in a survival or backpacking type of scenario, with extra exertion the sodium is actually needed. I totally agree in a survival situation mixing these ready to go meals with staples like beans and rice will help your food supplies to go farther and still be fairly tasty, satisfying, and healthy. Thanks for sharing this test with us!
