We as Christians and are called to a higher standard. I agree, often what may start innocently may be what the enemy uses as an open door to eventually cause havoc. I'm glad you brought this to light Annabelle, I'm happy you're challenging us to be better and better not just Sunday Christians.
The beautiful thing about this is that Matt didn't hide it. As an elder, he knew that his life and conduct are in the spotlight, as an example to the community and especially to the local body of the church. He was confronted by the friend, felt convicted of his own accord, went to the elders of his own accord, submitted to their processes of his own accord, and agreed with the decision that was made. He knew the possibility of this happening when approaching the elders in the first place. He could have just dealt with it in secret but there is a high level of accountability as an elder. If the church congregation understands church discipline, Matt will be supported and loved by them during this time, and if the Lord wills it, he will be restored to his position later. I belong to a church where discipline is done publicly according to the scriptures and it's been beautiful to see how restoration and healing come to those who submitted to it. Even a lady who didn't submit has recently come back and has given her life back to God. Praying for you Matt.
true, I agree. I never said what he did was necessarily wrong but if he claims the messages were unguarded and too familiar then some time off is not a bad idea. He's not just a member in the church he's the pastor. He needs to strive to be beyond reproach. Imagine if someone had done for ravi zachariaus what they've done for Matt... I expect my church esp cuz i'm a married woman to do the same for me. lest i fall you know? Do you understand what i mean?
Hi Clark, thank you for your comment. I understand maybe where you are coming from but i personally feel we should be open to the high calling that Christ expects of us. I expect my own church and Christian friends to hold me to the same standard esp cuz i'm a married woman. The bible says even a glance of lust is adultery Matthew 5:27-28. So if the messages were ungaurded and too familiar then i think its warranted. I really LOVE Matt and I'm so proud of him.
Hi Christine. I also understand your feelings too. The beautiful thing about this is that Matt was convicted about what the woman's friend said to him. He then immediately approached the elders and he submitted to the elders and he agreed with the decision. What's also beautiful is that God can restore him back into the position of ministry at the right time. It's worse when stuff is hidden and then blows up later... I personally belong to a church where discipline is done publicly. It was a huge culture shock but it's really stunning how people are restored back to God and they're stronger in that area than before.
Jesus died for all the sins of the world. Every one of us humans make mistakes and sin daily. We were born into sin even those elders that put this Pastor on leave sin daily without even knowing it because God says that we are born into sin and the only One who is sinless is JESUS CHRIST. That doesn't mean that those of us who serve God should take advantage , it just means that there is grace extended from God through JESUS to His believers and this man was judged and humiliated in front of many that he should have just got a discussion of warning in private over. God watch over us all and may we extend patience and grace to all of our siblings in CHRIST the way that HE does to us.🙏
Hi Rose, thank you for your comment... Its is true we all sin but James 3:1 says Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. ... therefore Its not about whether or not we all sin but whether i am willing to be held to the above standard. I'm so proud of Matt, he agreed with the elders by the way.
Hello, yes you're right. We all sin. But because he is an elder, he is held to account. If you listen carefully, he was approached by the woman's friend. He immediately went to the other elders with the issue, instead of dealing with it on his own. He submitted to them wanting to have a look at the extent of the messages and he agreed with the decision that was made. If the church congregation understands the point of church discipline, they'll not be condemning, and Matt is feeling humiliated because there was a blind spot that he didn't see himself. I personally belong to a church which does church discipline publicly. But I've seen marriages restored through it, elders being restored back to their positions, and I've seen healing and restoration of believers within the church. Some of those who refused the church discipline process left the church and have come back strong in their faith. One lady could have gone to any other church but she came back to the church family. Even restoration is done publicly and the whole process is absolutely beautiful and based on Scripture.
Your guilty brother, it’s time to leave the church. They did the right thing. Bye bye. You are embarrassing your wife and kids but most importantly your hurting our lord and savior.
Hi Gizel. He is still part of the church family and he can be restored back to His position at the proper time if God wills it. The point of church discipline is not to condemn or humiliate, but to restore the person, and hopefully in Matt's case, restore him back to his eldership position. This was the case in this situation too. He took responsibility for his actions and submitted to the process. Let's pray for him and not condemn him.

so true
Thank goodness it didn't go further. God's mercies are new every morning.

Avoid all appearances of evil … says the Lord . The Lord knows the intentions of our hearts . That’s what matters .
