  • Hello guys! It's been getting pretty chilly around here! Temperature was -12 degrees on this start. I think a 2006 Cat C15 MXS Electronic engine is supposed to start a little better than this in the cold though....
The second early morning bonus start video was -18, plugged into the block heater, though, I have a feeling the block heater is no longer working because that was a tough start!!

I go through 4 emotions watching cold starts. Anxiety - with everything crossed, hoping that it starts.
Saddness - because the engine must be so cold.
    Relief - when it starts.
Envy - that i don't have one, AND I WANT ONE. I love the smell of cold start diesel fumes.

You could feel the amp draw on the cold night start by how dim the lights got! I wasn't sure if it would start or not without ether. That was definitely borderline! Good thing you've got good batteries.

In weather like this dont be afraid to give it a snort of ether in the intake. Spin it over to make sure batt are not dead spray 2-3 seconds in the intake then start. You may need more in the real cold... It will start firing on all cylinders right away and stop the hard knock. People tend to be afraid of ether but its easier on things then a heavy diesel knock is. Its when you pump to much into a engine with dead battery's or a hot engine when the problems happen with ether. Its very important to spin over first so you know it will spin.

how it going my friend, this
reminds me of me back in the day , It is nice to see a young mann Who knows what is going on and respects his equipment and takes care of it , A lot of drivers after a cold start they start mashing the throttle to the floor and that is a big NO NO , What I have seen on cold starts that I do not see on your truck and that is , the smoke is coming out the pipes Not coming out from under the truck and in every place else , old bitc is being taken care of , she is your bread and butter my friend , Next time you run the overhead on your engine , It takes a little longer but what you want to do is , do each hole on firing order starting with Number one the front hole , and you will be able to hear each hole pop in your engine and starts easier with a nice pop , But I forget I think cats Have a pin lock and you do 3 holes at a time the cat that you have I forget But I think either way you can still do it , But the old school 4 an quarter They are the same way I'm not sure on the one you have , she will pull better and get better fuel mileage , Something I learned back in the day , a lot of mechanics doing overheads , and they jump all over the valves and injectors in all 6 holes that is not a precise way of doing it , myself Cummins is my favorite engine , and the old school Cummins that is where I learned that from , Do each hole on firing order , and them babies run nice , On a cold start some guys used Starting fluid do not do that , Because the pistons and rings and engine is so cold , if you use it it's going to put a lot of compression in the cylinder and you can crack a piston brake rings or even crack a liner , Do not use it , I do not care what they tell you

So why do you leave it unplugged for the first one .. Cold winter starts are very hard on diesel engines ... Also .. do you put oil in your diesel fuel ? The new diesel has no lubricity in it and the that engine was built to run on slippery diesel .. They run better and start better and will last a lot longer if you do this .. I put a quart of oil to every 150 US gallons ...
