I love this descent but that sharp right hander to left caught me out a few times also but you can get some serious speed up on this downhill, I'm from Stockport so don't get up there very often. Great video it reminds me of what i'm missing.
Know the road - and I believe if you were to cycle past the mast and carry on that the tarmac quickly runs out and there is a gate or a style. Is this the start of the run??
@ciaaerials You can either drive up to the big Radio Mast, or if you are heading over from Rivington Pike... You can turn left up the hill at the side of the Kennels, go all the way up to the road, turn left onto that road and keep heading up to the Mast. Once at the mast, carry on riding passed it (about 100m) and there is a road off to the right with a gate. This is the start :)
@MegaPistonhead Cheers mate! This was a while ago now (back when we had sun). I have since built a new bike. This was on a Specialized FSRxc with RS Lyriks. I had some damn good times on that bike. As soon as the wind and rain disappears (if ever)... I need to hit this run again. Love it!
@Rasmanisar Haha yes it is a DH bike... 2003 Specialized Big Hit. And they are indeed Lyriks on the FSR... They were mostly dialled back to 140mm, but when I was doing drops or jumps I had it on 160mm :) I bought the FSRxc when I was getting back into MTB and keeping my wheels on the ground, and then upgraded it as my riding progressed. To the point where if I had carried on the bike would have snapped :) I have since built up a beefier rig more suitable for my daft riding :D
@rickeraver This video was on a Specialized FSRxc, everytime I'm there I see people flying up & down there on hardtails. The most important thing to do on there is to stay loose and try to avoid getting tram-lined in some of the ruts. It is just a case of relaxing and keep looking ahead. I'm no professional downhiller by any stretch of the imagination and I have had people on cross country bikes overtaking me on more than one occasion. Its all about having fun. I have inboxed you a map link ;)
awesome video man props for getting up to those speeds. im a begginer at dh, :) (iv never ridden anything like you) lol but everybody starts somewhere. what train do i catch, where do i get off,and do you have directions to get me to the top of descent on my mtb?
Nice vid! I know where the start of this descent is but to get to it don't you have to go all the way up the access road (no bikes permitted) to the mast or is there another way? Also - is this a bridleway or a footpath?
@rickeraver Cheers mate... This is one seriously fun descent and great for learning on. The first few times I did this (without camera) was pretty slow, just to get the feel of it and to scope where the gnarly bits were. Nice soft landings on each side too :) To get there by train, I reckon Blackrod Rail Station would be your best bet with a 2.8 mile ride to the start of the climb. If you do a google direction search between Blackrod Rail and 53.606104,-2.525053 this should show you the route.
@MrMcSmee No problem. Haha i know where has the sun gone? Sounds like a good bike! Oh i know as soon as the suns out i will be out on my bike! Yeah i will have to try that trail sometime.
@MrMcSmee I managed to find it last night, went up from coalpit road to the mast. It was a good decent, so many drops and it's pretty rutted in parts! Upload will follow shortly...
@TheMrchilled Cheers mate! Not 100% on this, but the road is open to all but cars I think. iirc, there is a gate about 1/3 up the road where cars have to stop. However, I personally see cars driving to the top most days as they take their paragliding rigs up there. Also, it is heavily used by road bikers as a training hill. I wouldn't worry about it (Even the walkers are friendly to bikers up there too!!). Although I tend to ride up then down the same track, which is painful on a DH/FR rig :D
@MrMcSmee Aye, glad you got yourself a bigger rig as running 160mm forks on a bike built for 120's could easily snap the headtube - I've seen it happen. What spec have you got on your new rig? I'm currently umming and ahing between another freeride bike and a 160mm enduro.
@MrMcSmee got the map muchos gracias ;) and yeah its the ruts that make it look dangerous. dude where did you get the ££ for your bike? what is your job ?
Looks decent, where do you access this route? presumably its same way up as down? where is it in relation to the Barn, I am up there often with my 'other' bike.
whats your build? i ride a standard trek ticket 30 2011. its a hard tail and have never ridden anything close to this. i am confident on my bike but the first time i watched the video i had butterflies imagining it was me.1 is it as dangerour as it looks? 2 how often do you buy tyres and replacement parts? and 3, if i input those coordinates,i get an unknown road on the corner of george lane...which direction do i go to find the start of the trail ?
@rickeraver Not up there as often as I'd like. Just getting back on my bike after smashing my wrist to pieces in Scotland late last year so will hopefully be getting back up there asap. I travel by car from Bolton and either park at Rivington Barn and do a big loop over the top of the Rivington Pike. Or, if i'm feeling particularly lazy, I will park at The San Marino Pub on Belmont Road at the bottom of the run :D
@D36YLDJOHN It is a really fun descent! I would recommend giving it a go though, the first time I went down very carefully. And, as you can see by my near miss... I'm still learning :D Still laugh my nuts off every time I see my mates crash too :D :D
What on earth is your friend riding? Looks like a flipping DH bike :L Oh, and surely you aren't running Lyriks on your FSR XC, they come stock with 120mm forks don't they?
just walked up that path today....you came down a lot quicker than I got up!!!!great fun vid
Brilliant, thanks a lot bud. Good vid and respect to ya for lugging that big rig up a big hill!
Yep, spot on mate! Gate to the right, which is the start of the fun :)

LOL. Nice to see you stopped to check your mate was ok :0)
