- Leaked US intelligence claims the Saudi Crown Prince threatened the US following Washington’s vow to punish Riyadh in 2022. In 2022, US President Biden had pledged to impose ‘consequences’ on Saudi Arabia for teaming up with Russia to cut oil production. Mohammed bin Salman retaliated with threats to alter the Saudi-US relationship, as per leaked US intelligence cited by the Washington Post. MBS privately threatened that “he will not deal with the US administration anymore”, vowing “major economic consequences for Washington”. However, it’s not clear if the threat was made directly to US officials or if it was intercepted by electronic spying.

Already the Saudi government is exerting economic costs on the US and its allies. De-dollarization is one such cost. The other cost is the premium that the US Western partners have to pay for oil on the global market when Saudi Arabia cuts production. Of course, the extra dollar they pay for energy costs reduces potential US revenues from Western markets. Aligning with China and joining BRICS reduces the US diplomatic clout that it uses to its economic advantage.
