We generally advise to make only one hole. This is in case you later want to wear your ushanka without a badge, which is usually true for hats made of natural fur. In other words, fewer holes make it less noticeable that a badge has been pinned in the first place.

Turns out they were both from russia. He asked if i was russian, and when we were done he shook my hand and left.

I just did mine and then came across this video. I am agreement mostly; but, you must measure. Precision in what we do is important. 1)I centered it and marked with a pin and a black marker. 2) I drilled using a bit about the size of that nail, yes, you need to "wallow" the bit or nail around in the hole. 3)Make sure that both pin/wires are tight together as to go through the hole as one, and fold them accordingly. If the emblem does not appear centered after you measured, adjust the emblem to the right, left, up or down; it may be off center because of the pressing of the emblem and wire made it off center. By all means wear it in public with the emblem; fuck what others think, and buy yourself an AK-74, or AKM with the bayonet which is costly, at least a Makarov. Good luck.

I have a navy blue ushanka with the Russian Navy Emblem (Cockade(Sorry if I misspelled it. I'm learning Russian.) Please let me know if you know how to spell it correctly) on it & I only wear it as a fashion accessory & I tell my friends & family "Please touch the fur; But NOT the emblem b/c the oil from your skin will make the emblem dull & it won't be shiny, sparkly & pretty anymore if you touch it" But I let them touch the fur to see & feel how soft and plush it is. I love wearing it around fall & winter where I live in New England in Connecticut & everyone gives me lots of respect & nice compliments on my ushanka. I tell "This is a wool baby, It's not like a cheap cotton piece of crap/junk that was made in cheap China; No, No, No! This was made in Mama/Mother Russia!" "The Hunt For Red October" was probably 1 of the things that sparked my obsession with Genuine Russian Ushankas. I also have another navy blue ushanka & it has the soviet union emblem. I personally like to wear it without the soviet union emblem so that I don't offend anyone.

I wish that front flap could fold down so I could have a flat surface to measure and stab at properly. Every website says the pin is not attached to the hat for convenience, but it would be more convenient if they applied it for me. I thought there would be a hole in the hat so you could attach whatever pin you want, but the fact that there isn't and you have to do the whole thing yourself is just frustratingly difficult.

spoke1183 the thing is that in America people are paranoid as hell these days and will flag you for wearing military stuff, it’s really stupid. All that is accepted is that crappy north face stuff that costs upwards of $300+ for winter stuff. I think for one if you don’t wear the norm, your not supporting the costly name brands and so capitalism ain’t happy and second, 9/11 made noobs paranoid too.

I poke a hole in the front and hope it's small enough that the pin stays, but not too small.
Also I think the Russians juked be because one of the strings unraveled causing the ear flaps to go down.

I got mine, and came with a tag that says this:
    thank you
for the purchase of the traditional Shaik earflaps
, made in St. Petersburg Russia.
Turn all the earflaps Russian frost
    Cirque articles with neutral cleansers
means of in zholodnoy water at a maximum
    30 ° C
The tag was originally in russian, but i translated it. Zholodony means lukewarm, right?
