This is such an important gig in the history of Nirvana. This was the first time Kim and Thurston from Sonic Youth saw Nirvana live. Sonic Youth would later become their patrons and mentors, getting them on Gold Moutain Entertainment and signing with DGC and also inviting Nirvana to tour with them i Europe during the summer of '91.
Thank you for that information, I did not know that.
And J mascis, this is the show when he asked J to join his band
There's a gig that Sonic Youth did in 1984 out in the Mojave Desert. The Meat Puppets and the Minutemen (RIP D. Boon, 1958 - 1985*) and other bands were also there. Thought I'd just pass that along. It's on film under the title "Desolation Center."
* He died in a car accident when he was laying in the back of a van with the flu, trying to catch some sleep. His fiance was driving, the rear axle broke, the van flipped over, he fell out and broke his neck.
@@101Volts The minutemen we’re fucking excellent. D Boon was a great guitarist and wouldn’t miss a single lick while bouncing around like a jack rabbit and knocking over people in the process. Truly one of a kind band.
This show took place 45 minutes away from my house and since Nirvana played at J.C. Dobbs in Philadelphia, PA the night before (July 12, 1989) Nirvana would of Drove down the Highway passed my Town to get to Hoboken, NJ for this Maxwell's Show on July 13, 1989.
But Yes, this was the first time Kim and Thurston from Sonic Youth and J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr seen Nirvana Live.
They were brought there by Susan Tennet (who worked with DGC and Sonic Youth and had an office in Hoboken)
After the show Nirvana hung out with Sonic Youth, Nirvana first Opened up for Sonic Youth for 8 shows in August 1990 on Sonic Youth's Goo West Coast Tour (Nirvana had Dale Crover on drums at the time as they didn't have a drummer). Then after Recording Nevermind Nirvana opened up for Dinosaur Jr for 10 shows June 10-20, 1991 on Dinosaur Jr Green Mind West Coast Tour And then Nirvana Toured with Sonic Youth in August 1991 across Europe which some was documented in the film "1991 The Year Punk Broke" by Dave Markey.
Imagine being at a Nirvana gig in the late 80's and telling someone a day or two later "i went to see a local band last night, they weren't bad". Then two years later suddenly having that same memory and knowing you had the privilege of seeing Nirvana in the early stage of their career becomes one of the most significant, vital, and rememberable moments of your life.
I had that exact experience! Saw Nirvana this same year at the Green Parrot also in NJ. Fun side note: I played at this same club (Maxwell's) in my own band only a few years later. 🤙
Wow. I was at the Green Parrot many times, never knew that Nirvana played there!
For me it was seeing them at a club we went to pretty much no matter who was playing. Had no clue who they were. They were basically just background noise while we fucked off. I won't tell the rest of the story because it got bombarded by roll eyes emojis the first time.
saw em with tad and mudhoney all the time in garages
@@JohnSmith-mj6qx I want the story, bro.
I promise not to roll my eyes.
Bro the energy in their bleach Era really shows how happy they were before they were famous
Crazy energy!
I'm surprised how well early Nirvana was documented on tape. When I was young we recorded live shows on audio cassette - I never dreamed that I could afford a video camera.
I think Krist got someone to record almost all of them
@@davidmcbride8906 God, I hope so!
Yep agree much better quality footage of Nirvana out there compared with early footage of the early SG shows (albeit for early SG, their shows were 85, 86 etc, not 89)
It always amazes me when celebrities have video footage of themselves in their childhood. Kurt's family made home videos of him as young as 2 yrs.
Even in the early 60's, families had video cameras.
I have zero footage of myself as a child, and I'd five almost anything to see myself in childhood.
As a child, it would be easy to mistake me for Kurt's brother; we are 83 days apart in age and I am both artist and musician, as was Kurt.
I'm a better artist, he was a better musician. I'm working on the music.
If u ever saw Kurt it was epic. Peeps knew this was history
That's Jason Everman playing guitar along side Cobain. He also played bass in Soundgarden for a while and was a green beret who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
he just made the stage image of nirvana too metal here. he takes the edge with his random insincere headbanging and I am sure Kurt was aware of it. Its so important for a band to play good but also to look good. Check the book Commando of Johnny Ramone where he insisted on their stage behaviour where Joey was placed in the middle and was not allowed to dance, wiggle, etc. and DeeDee had to be a mirror reflection of Johnny, to move back to the speakers and front to the crowd only when Johnny does that. Nothing is random.
Holy shit, actual good footage of a Nirvana show with Jason Everman. Fucking awesome.
Kurt's voice was strong and raw af here
I'm surprised that I haven't come across this recording until now. You're right. I mean, yeah, remastering lo-fi audio recordings always comes at the expense of some of the original dynamics, but in this instance the net gain in sound quality is without question worth it. Kurt's vocals couldn't be more inspired, the performance as a whole is exceptional.
He'd be 55 today. He's now been gone longer than he was alive. RIP, Kurt.
🙏❤️🕊
Wow this is a treasure of music history. Like the Beatles in the cavern club
The energy of 'Love Buzz' in this performance is electrifying. I truly believe they were at their peak here, maybe not artistically, but mentally.
Watch Grohl’s first few shows. At that point, it seemed inevitable that they would do something insanely cool. The drums need some crisping up.
Both.
A lot of people would agree with you there.
Agree ❤
Completely agree. Kurt was clearly in a much better head space here.
This is pretty f***ing awesome
The pure energy exerted in these early shows is unmatched
this video shows that the core roots of their sound were already solid before they hit the big time. thanks for posting OP.
I feel like they were MORE solid.
@@morsteen I agree and I believe that is because with Nevermind they were experimenting with a new sound being more melodic and leaning on the more pop side of things. I believe Kurt and the band noticed this too and that’s why they wanted to go back to that raw sound with In Utero.
They were band that made fun of being famous/popular. I heard their album even topped MJs dangerous album. That didn't sit right with them so they put on shirts with young MJs face on them to give respect when they played live
Kurt really ironed out the vocals though.
Could be better production, but his vocals 92 onward were fucking pristine, despite his bad singing habits.
@@pandaman1968 🙄
Great band. Great music. Awesome atmosphere. So sad the world lost it .
I would argue the world would have lost it had they given up and become landscapers, which was the original plan. Here, the world can experience this forever!
Same 😢
Back when Kurt had a Marshall. Don’t know why he didn’t like the brand but he still used one 😂
This is the gig where his Univox Hi-Flier met its demise!!! I always loved that guitar.
The night Thurston, Kim and J Mascis saw Nirvana for the first time ever! History
How do you know?
I just saw an interview w J in Austrailia from 2/14/24. He said Kurt asked him to join the band that night. Thats how I found this video
Awesome! Even Jason Everman was there!
the next week he is gone!
@@sloburnjo I can see why he left. There's nothing wrong with him, but his aesthetic is from some other place. He went on to an incredible career in the military, so it was best for all.
Yep before he became a macho army murderer man.
@@nickfanzo damn shame
Bleach was a heavy record! So much ahead of its time.
Bleach is the best album they put out, then in utero. Just my opinion
@@severlightgaming valid, i just wish they could've done bleach with higher quality equipment but at the same time it gives it such a good feel since it wasn't
@@rileyhedges2836 absolutely. For a what?, $600 recording session, it's pretty dope. I think there is a remastered version, but I can't hear the difference.
Incesticide was pretty heavy too. I Think in the latter half of the bands time they got more experimental and more punk rock focused.
@@lacking5724I mean, most of the songs from Incesticide were recorded at the same time some Bleach songs were recorded, so of course the style is kinda similiar
Wow, this gave me the chills and is amazing. Love that they trash their instruments for a 50 person gig… rock&roll
The copperpot treatment, thank you!
Omg.. Kurt sounds so good here! The whole bad sounds killer!! 🤘🎸
Fantastic job and much better with the audio not as distorted. Happy weekend!
@Daniel Ramirez he really does
I learned every nirvana song from this guy he does kick ass indeed
@@mykul6147 nirvana is the best grunge band of all time
Is he still makimg tutorials? He hasn't uploaded in 4 months!
I love you bro
Now this was when I was first introduced to nirvana . And here we have true grunge out - garage party -
What’s a great time back then !!!!
Was so excited when he went mainstream - but now mainstream sucks . More into underground music
I like this version of About a girl!
14:32 best spank thru scream of all time!
I stopped the video and rewound to hear it again as I watched!
Yup!
Best song ever
That’s the loudest scream ever
sound quality plus bass tone = fucken awesome
nirvana has so heavy and pissed back then best 90s alt band
This is amazing.. how does an old video sound so good? Imagine what it must have sound like being there.
I've been in that room and made recordings with a modernish(2007) camera. It is an awesome room and my recordings weren't nearly as good as this but that's probably because I was at the front literally knees to stage.
They run the sound guys mix right into the giant VHS camcorder on the guy with a mustache’s shoulder
@@Mewse1203who was performing
@@Samfromoneframe a band called Thursday.
This is when Nirvana was at their best for me!!!
They never stopped being the best
lol
I don't think their songs and performance capabilities deteriorated at all after this, Kurt became a melody master even more and I definetely think Dave managed to keep the drumming as good as Chad's
I think the high point was the Paramount Halloween show. Kurt didn’t handle fame well and lost his energy for playing the songs. They toured relentlessly as everyone had to cash in - add a toxic marriage and heroin and well we know what eventually happened. Thankfully, we have all this
The Paramount show is definitely good. If I had to make a guess on what their best show was after they became popular, I would say it was reading 92. That's been my favorite for like 25 years. But my favorite Nirvana is before they got big, the songs from bleach and incesticide. I love them as a garage rock band. So that's why I like the early stuff. They were still awesome live once they got big, I just really like that early stuff. I feel like they kind of had a little bit more of a metal influence then, which I love.
Maxwell's was such an intimate venue. You were literally *right there* with the band.
Damn. I was 9 years old when this video was recorded. Now I'm 42. It wouldn't be until I was 12 when I first heard Nirvana on the radio, lithium.
Mind blowing. I just hit 41 on the 16th, yet it seems like maybe 10 years ago I first got my hands on a cassette that began with a garbled chunk of Chris' Jefferson Airplane prelude into 'Territorial Pissings'. Took a few months for me to realize that side B was the 1st half of Nevermind, probably another year before realizing that, about 10 minutes after 'Something In The Way' ended, 'Endless, Nameless' began. Still remember running up the road to tell my best friend about the "secret song"😁
80s + Chad + Univox Guitars = The NIRVANA i love the most
Is that who's one drums here
@@scottykingdavid Chad Channing
And now we have the Foo Fighters 🤣🤣🤣
Sickest thing Ive seen on the tube for a while! Thankyou for preserving and posting. "More Rolling Rock to the stage!"
I particularly like this show because it features a great version of *Scoff* which was always one my favorite Nirvana songs.
This is a great show and everything, but heartbreaking to see Kurt in such good shape, knowing what he'd look like a few short years later. Thanks for posting.
Oui, c'est sûr, a cette époque, il avait peut-être ( affectivement ) les bonnes personnes autour de lui, pas comme plus tard, je ne nomme personne..,mais tt le monde a compris, suivez mon regard
Ahh back before they had the audience eating out of their hands, here they really wanted to show what they were made of.
Wow, the quality of this tape when zoomed in is amazing
Amazing footage and audio... thanks AltCopperpot!!!🎶🎤🎸
Most shows I have recorded with my phone, yeah it's rare but it does happen sound and look nowhere near as good as this looks and sounds! And this is 31 years old!?! Amazing
Digital recordings are shit.
Yeah most on board mics on those big vhs cameras seemed to actually pick up sound very nice. Also, looks like this was synced up to a tape recording. So that helped on the audio side of things. I've used the zoomh4n for live recordings , and that thing rocked! You could have soundboard in, and onboard room mics recording at the same time on 4 separate tracks. Then blend room with soundboard to get a really nice full sound, and sync with the video.
Wow! These guys are great. Bummer they never turned into anything.
In the 90’s we used to have to pay a shitload for these bootleg VHS tapes in the back of a local record store. I still have one of them. Ha.
This is the best Nirvana video of all time on the UA-cams. The best.
Wow. Love buzz. Album perfect. Electric performance.
This is officially my favorite Nirvana performance! Thank you for sharing it! 💯
Kills me to watch Kurt....still can't believe he's gone...but know he's in our heads n hearts...
This is when Thurston was amazed by Kurt's screaming voice.
it's amazing how perfect this performance really is. 👍❤️👍

Looks good man, thanks for posting!
Maxwell's always had the greatest bands. The proprietor, Steve, was the first one to turn me on to the new music happening in downtown New York City. He had Patti Smith's my generation on his jukebox along with the most eclectic music you could imagine. I stopped hanging at the Disco around the corner.
