    4:46 Fun fact: Slim Kid Tre and Fatlip (of the Pharcyde) fought over Dilla's drum programming on "Runnin'". Slim was fine with how the drums were programmed, but Fatlip was a traditionalist and wanted the drums quantized and without the extra ghost notes. On the single, there's a lifeless quantized version that Fatlip wanted. It's trash to say the least 😂😂😂. The name is "Runnin' [Smooth Extended Mix]" if you wanna check it out.

    Great video 👍🏻 new to the channel but I’m impressed, I started producing hip hop beats just over a month ago, after I started remixing vocals to some of my favourite hip hop beats and artists I would of liked to hear on that beat, done that for a month or so then decided to start making my own beats.
    I’ve been picking beat making up fairly quick and already made a fair few beats, people have been impressed with, I feel this channel will help me to level up 👌🏻 top job 👍🏻

    Great vidéo. ok, now the same job with the vinyls, an MPC 3000, without quantize, sampler in 45 rpm, all on a 1.44 mo floppy disk. and the work force that dilla has accomplished is enormous in addition to his talent with the groove that he has brought to us. Dilla used the mpc 3000 filter a lot on the kicks.

  • @verbone
    @verbone 2 роки тому +14

    Dilla is definitely one of hip hop's greatest producers of all time, and ultimately who's "greatest" comes down to personal preference out of maybe five to ten different producers, but there are producers who have been far more influential. How about Marley Marl, who popularized sampling in hip hop? Kurtis Blow who was the first hip hop producer to sample - period? Dr. Dre, who launched an entire coast's sound in the mid 1980s, a sound that spread throughout the Midwest and South and is still hugely influential today? Primo, whose chopping style still dictates how many producers make beats 25 years later? Pete Rock? Or even Rick Rubin, who redefined the directions hip hop can go, blending rock and other genres into rap? None of this is to say Dilla wasn't and isn't great or influential, because he is!, but let's keep hip hop history in perspective. Dilla came after a long line of greats, who both created and perfected most of the techniques Dilla used.

      Including Probably Dilla’s biggest influence Q-tip. I love dilla’s production and he is definitely a legend but people putting him over q-tip I just don’t get. Q-tip is the person behind tribe called quest sound

    • @darianjohnston1658
      @darianjohnston1658 2 роки тому +1

      Bruh dilla basically singlehandedly gave us the blueprint to the 2000's sound. People were bitting dilla hard during that era and couldn't even come close

    • @verbone
      @verbone 2 роки тому

      @@darianjohnston1658 I feel you, and I'm not taking shit away from Dilla at all - he was a genius - but by that logic, dudes like Marley, Primo, Dre, etc. gave us blueprints from the 1980s until today, which was my point. If we're talking greatest, that's opinion and preference. But, most influential? We got dudes in the game still who influenced 30+ years of hip hop.

    • @DaveDEF82
      @DaveDEF82 2 роки тому

      @@mont-doggBeats Why is Q-Tip a bigger influence on Jay Dee's sound than Pete Rock exactly? And MAYBE people put J Dilla over Q-Tip because Tip himself said that Dilla was better than him? Man, there is even this Red Bull interview in which Q-Tip is talking about how he first showed the Jay Dee demo tape to Dave from De La Soul who told him straight to his face: "It's sounds like your shit but just better."

  • @LETTMusic
    @LETTMusic 2 роки тому

    Dilla was an incredible producer. My favorite track of his is Workinonit. It's such an eclectic mix of hip hop, samples, and synths, he was ahead of his time.
    I think it's worth pointing out, anyone who likes Dilla's drums, Splice actually has a whole pack of Dilla's actual drum samples called 'The Fantastic Sounds of Jay Dee AKA J Dilla'. So anyone looking to revive a bit of that boom bap, you can get Dilla's drums direct off Splice.
    Now whether or not you can pull off the off-beat, off-the-grid rhythms that Dilla cemented his greatness for, that's to find out for yourself. Just figured I'd share that his drum samples were very accessible for anyone who did not know.
