- The leaders of Vietnam and Russia, President To Lam and President Vladimir Putin, have said they want to boost ties as the pair met in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi.
To Lam was full of praise for his Russian counterpart, congratulating him on his recent re-election.
Mr Putin, in return, said strengthening a strategic partnership with the south-east Asian country was one of Russia's priorities.
His trip to Vietnam, which comes on the heels of his lavish visit to North Korea, is being interpreted as a demonstration of the diplomatic support Russia still enjoys in the region.

Fun fact: Vietnam could have been a strong US ally since the early 1900s. Ho Chi Minh first turned to the US as he wants to pursue democracy and try to hold talks with the US to help VN from continued French colonisation. The US clearly didn't want any trouble back then, also joining hand with HCM would definitely upset its French ally so they turned it down. After multiple years of trying, Ho Chi Minh then turned to the Soviet Union and was very welcomed. Soviet (now Russia) has since became one of VN oldest & strongest ally. I couldn't imagine how different things turned out now, had VN and US joined hand 100 years ago. I'm a Genz vietnamese from a typical Viet family where grandparents both sides fought in the war for Vietcong. I do know what Russia do to Ukraine is so wrong. But growing up with story of the glorious USSR and how great the Russian are from my grandparents, I just have this love for russia lol just like other Vietnamese out there. At the same time I also love the freedom and democracy of the West, since Im an australian citizen too. Very strange indeed.

Having said that, Russia (Soviet Union) is Vietnamese communist party's best friend. Lots of Vietnamese kids went to Russia before the Vietnam war to study there, very secretive. But ,Vietnam policy is very independent in terms of foreign policy affairs. For Vietnamese people, we are still divided. Similar to Korean people, they are sad as well. :)) It is hard to solve these issues. Although the war ended, the country was liberated by the Northern Vietnamese Communist Party. Vietnamese people are still crying.
