Hi Loyd. I ran the Kullamannen 100 miler and used both shoes. I ran the first 100k the in Norda's and finished with the SG 5's. I changed mainly to switch things up in order to get the energy back to finish the race as I was feeling very sorry for myself and was at the point of DNF. The midsole of the Norda's is much more alive and springy, while the SG was a little bit mushy and indistinct by comparison but the SG's upper was very very comfy and got me home with under an hour to spare. I found both to be really excellent long distance shoes, but I would prefer the Norda's overall. They shone on shoreline road sections. I was lucky enough that the heel counter worked well with my foot. I can't really argue about the price difference other than to say that I've given the Norda's a battering in the run up to and during the race, and other than the fact that they will never again look as glorious as they did out of the box, they have become moulded to my footshape in a great way. Still no loss of bounce or much wear on the outsole with over 300K in them.
Always respect you and your reviews, Loyd. No serious comparison here: the 001, while not perfect, is superior in nearly every respect. Like you I don’t like the Norda’s heel counter, which irritates my Achilles. Yet the SG 5 is much less comfortable underfoot (the Hoka Tecton X is vastly superior to the SG 5 in that regard); much less durable (2 of the eyelets in my SG 5s ripped out in the first 35 miles!); and feels much more stiff, heavy and clumsy by comparison. If athletes don’t want or can’t afford to spend the big bucks on the Norda, definitely default to the NNormal Tomir! Just used the Tomir in the second half of a 200-mile ultramarathon, the Cowboy 200, and found it nearly identical to the 001 except for the tongue and heel counter (which are more comfortable!) and the ride (which isn’t as soft underfoot as the Norda 001). I rectified the less-plush ride of the NNormal Tomir by using Inov-8 Boomerang footbeds! Loyd, I didn’t get a single blister in 200 miles with the Tomir, which costs the same as the underwhelming Speedgoat 5s. I still love Norda and have high hopes for the future. My rotation is Norda, NNormal, Salomon (the brilliant S/Lab Genesis especially) and Hoka (Tecton X), with Speedland for shorter distances. Happy trails to you and all your supporters!
Cheers Troy 👍 I personally think there's lots of comparisons here Troy because both shoes are competing in the same market space - 1-Both shoes are deeply cushioned trail running shoes. 2-Almost identical weights. 3-Only 1mm difference between heel off sets. 4-Both shoes have very similar Vibram outsoles. 5-The Speedgoats and the norda 001 would appeal to similar type of runner. I totally agree that the midsole on the norda 001 performs a bit better than the Speedgoats, I mentioned that in the video, but is it £150 better? I haven't had any issues with the lace eyelets on the Speedgoats but I am having overlay peel issues on the norda 001 😔 I think it's hard to justify the price of the norda shoe, especially when the heel and ankle collar are poorly designed 🤔 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, as always its appreciated 🙏
@@Run4Adventure150$ probably not but at the same time, cyclists pay thousands to save a few grams on their bike/equipment ... as much as I don't want to encourage the manufacturers to increase the prices (as we have seen with road running shoes), at the same time, 150$ feels like nothing imho as an annual cost for a sport, I think running is such an inexpensive sport when compared to skiing and cycling for example .. also, for road running, the Prime X strung is selling for 400$ CAD so there is a market for that price range .. and manufacturers will feel more encouraged to take risks and make more crazy shoes if people willing to pay the price
@@Run4Adventure RE: overlay peel issues. I'm having those issues too, but it seems that Norda has updated their standard version by adding seams along the top of the overlays.
I have both of these in rotation - the only real negative for the SG is the outsole wear - same for versions 3, 4 and 5 - NB the 3s remain my favourite iteration. I'm not heavy - 68kg - but my SG heel corners are flat after 300km and so usually junked around 500km. My nordas have 120km on the clock and have no obvious wear - both Vibram but definitely not the same. So if these 001s can hit 1,000 km, I've got my money back. Also to note; the profit margins are great in the UK - the Nordas cost 260 swiss francs where I live - which would be under £230 - which is still not the same as saying that they are cheap :) My only complaint with the 001s is getting the laces right at the start - I usually have to re-tighten after 5-10 mins...
I am a massive Hoka fanboy and especially the Speedgoats, having had quite a few pairs of each iteration from SG2. My main issue with them is the durability. The last pair of SG5s barely made it to 300 miles before the entire heel was flat. I appreciate that could be down to my heel strike running but for the increase in price, you would think they could make the sole more durable. Keep up the great work and enjoy Europe in your new camper. 👍🏼
I wore the SG and it was very nice but felt narrow for me. Ultimately I ended up purchasing the Norda for the material's longevity. The Norda is extremely springy. Really pushes you forward compared to the SG.
Hoka Speedgoat5 is like a Swiss Army Knife Trail runners staple~ Norda 2 is a fine tool~ You have to treat yourself....I enjoy both. My 002's are going strong with over 500 miles.
Thanks Loyd for another honest and great review. Not shoes for me here. I've never liked the Hokas, they are to narrow in the forefoot and not as comfy for me as many other thinks. And that silly price on the Satisfy, no way ill pay that amount for a pare of shoes that in my nordic climate will be destroyed in a winters time
Haven't tried the Norda (and never will at that price 😂 ) but have had multiple pairs of every iteration of the SG. Like you, I loved the SG3 but I also didn't dislike the SG4. I'm now on the SG5 and can't say I love it. Been on a few runs now, including 30 miles of Centurion's WW50 and I have a few observations about the SG5. It seems to fit a bit wider than other SGs. I went for my usual regular fit size10. (I'm a 9.5 but have always gone up 0.5 for the SG). I definitely get more lateral movement than I did in the other SGs and getting the mid foot locked down seems trickier/fussier. The tongue on the SG5 seems shorter and you have to be careful that the laces don't slip behind when doing them up, especially if using a runner's knot. Mid sole feels the same to me as other versions but I have slipped in the SG5 a couple of times, even though the outsole in identical to the 4s as far as I can see. I can play around with the midfoot lock down but that short (and thin) tongue is pretty annoying if I'm honest.
I totally agree Ian, the 3's are the stand out Speedgoat version. I wasn't a fan of the 4's, it didn't work for my footshape. The 5's definitely feel better for me but still not as good as the 3's. The 5 has more volume and depth at the midfoot and I have to pull it down pretty tight to get a good hold around my midfoot. I also agree with you when it comes to the tounge, more lenght and more padding needed! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated mate 🙏😊
Good afternoon Run4adventure and all the runners. Interesting review. I don't knew the norda's brand. My vote goes to Hoka Speedgoat 5. Here is my like. A nice monday for everyone. ☀️🏃♂️⛰
Have you tried Speed Land shoes? They are expensive also, but they say that they are made with the best materials. It would be good to have an unbiased review and comparison (where appropriate).
The new Garmin Fenix has an amazing screen, definitely the brightest on a running watch but they are expensive! I currently use a Coros Apex Pro and it works really well for me while running at night. Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏😊
To my knowledge the idea that two identical shoes in rotation extends their life has never been well tested, and the hypothesis behind it, that the foam needs time to recover, is pretty dodgy if you ask me. Until someone does a proper study including empirical measurements of wear such as durometer, I'm classifying this as old runner's tale.
Hi Loyd, I did run in both. Love Hoka and always will. Regarding Norda I unfortunately don’t like them. I find the shoe doesn’t fit well at all if you have a narrow foot. Foot moves too much which is not good. Doesn’t drain well, ankle area not fitting and no cushion with the tongue which is super uncomfortable. The grip is amazing and love the cushion mid foot. I believe this show was designed for a man. Last thing the price too high for all the things Norda needs to correct.
I tried the NNormal shoes on at UTMB and if I'm honest they didn't seem to fit my foot shape that well so I haven't tried them 👍 The midsole was also very flat and quite firm and I tend to like a bit more cushioning. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏
Nice looking shoe but I'll wait for the heel cup to have some more thought and the ridiculous price to come down. Those Canadians sure like to gouge us Americans on shoes and apparel. Thanks for the review.
Well, a year down the track there are tales of people getting 1500-2000 km out of one pair of Nordas, saving multiple pairs of other shoes going into landfill. That's really what the company is about - making shoes that actually last, rather than buying and wearing out the competition. The price differential disappears when you put longevity in the equation.
Dynema is expensive to use and very durable but what about the midsole foam and outsole rubber? Surely they will both break down at the normal rate so you'll be left with a strong upper but the outsole and cushion will be knackered! 🤔
No trail or road shoe justifys the 280 pound price. I have just purchased the Asics Fugi lite 3 for under a hundred pounds it's well made comfortable and more importantly performs very well. The Norda dosent even look expensive but people will still be daft enough to buy it.
I've heard good thinks about the Asics Fugi lite 3 Keith, that's a good buy for under £100 👍 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏
It's tricky when it comes to rubber on the outsole of a trail shoe. Softer rubber obviously bites in a bit more and gives you better grip. Where as a harder compound would give you more durability but not a lot of grip. I personally would rather have softer compound that gave me good levels of grip 👍 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment Lun, it's appreciated 🙏😊
