Why this video, in my opinion is so good. Dan teaches the philosophy of the " sound " of the scale, and where to start and use it. And when he mentioned starting on the 5th, or ANY other related note, it brought me back to the memory of when I would start improvising, and I would consciously map out the "other" starting notes. In the beginning it was foreign sounding until my ears adjusted, and because I was imagining the changes in my head, but then it REALLY opened me up to SO MANY other possibilities, especially when using diminished arpeggios, and mixing them with the others. Thanks again.
I'm a self taught guitarist who plays a lot of stuff that I have no idea what it is I'm doing. I started out like most doing rock covers. But hooked up with a jazz drummer. He put on some Brand X one day for me to listen to, and from that moment on there was no going back to same old song and dance. My goal has never been to sound just like someone else. But to find my own style of doing things. When you hear Holdsworth or Jeff Beck or John Goodshall you know right away who is playing. I really enjoy Scott Henderson because he's a mix of of all three but you still know who your listening to. This video is very helpful to me. Thank you for sharing. Subscribed...
Sometimes subtraction can make a huge difference. So, basically if you subtract one note from the F whole tone scale, (Eb) you get five of the notes of the D melodic minor scale. Skipping playing the root in the melody makes a lot of ordinary scales sound more mysterious!
great stuff- learning a lot from your approach vids, appreciate the concepts and not getting tied into specific licks, also short and sweet to get the idea and move into applying it/practicing it
🔥🎉🚀🎸 Ok. I did a search on “ how to use whole tone scales in guitar solos”. After a few vids that just wanted to show me how to play the scale (knew that) I found YOU! You have a great style of teaching and imma hooked so I did the Subscribe and will start checking out your older lessons and any tracks you play on. And a funny aside, this started because my son sent a video of him trying some 3 octave major scales and saying he wanted to tap into Holdsworth types of things. I said that was great and he should also check out whole tone and diminished scales. I honestly had NO IDEA of that connect until seeing this video. 😂
"im tired of people liking my lines" lmao
I never would have thought of using the "A#" whole tone on the A minor. Brilliant stuff!
Yup, it's E dominant
After having been all over, this is easily one of the best, if not the best, guitar channels on UA-cam for purposes of learning theory. So good
Excellent. Check out the whole tone lick about 2:32 into Steely Dan's "Kings" for a 1972 rock example.
