What a good video and what a beautiful GTA. I am 17 years old and thank God I have a 1987 Trans am I will always try to keep it clean with my father because those cars are very beautiful.

Keep the third gen content coming! That GTA looks really nice. Coming from a third gen Camaro, it's interesting to see the differences in things like the intake on these cars.
@@Greenlightfilming I've not messed with the Firebirds, but any idea why they routed the air intake on those over behind the headlight? The TPI Camaro's had two air filters in front of the radiator and then it went straight back to the throttle body. Always liked that setup cause it looked clean.
Loving your videos! Its kicking back all those memories when I use to own a 87 TA and a 89 GTA. Those were some good times and miss owning a 3rd gen more and more.
I would have to say the gta will win. I’ve driven a few and the tpi has awesome low end torque and the automatic transmission won’t miss a shift, as long as it is in good condition.
Like your GTA. I had a 1987 Trans Am almost like it. It had the Crosslace wheels (WS6), and the rare digital dash. According to PHS, 1 of 662 built (non GTA)
As someone who has a 92 Z28 5.7 TPI which is not as nice as yours but anyway keep the videos coming . I grew up when these cars were new and love them even with all there flaws.
Theres something endearing about them. They don't cost a lot of money for the most part. Their flaws are plentiful, but they can be fixed. Overall they are pretty good bang for the buck IMO
So far, I'm on strike three with finding a body shop to resprayt it. Going to figure something out though. I'd like to keep this one if I can make it as nice as the 4th gen without spending a fortune.
Have you taken it up on the Highway, I owned the same car, But I put a 5 speed in, just like the factory would have and a 342 posi, I had it up to 153, top end, that was with a gps, speedo was only off 1 mph. Great cars. wish i never sold.
the early model headlight motors were a lot better than the late model ones, they were just a lot noisier. What would fail on them was the relays, so you just replace the relay. Later model ones, especially 4th gens, ate gears. The only saving grace is you would use the back side of the gears and double the life of the unit. There were some guys making brass gears for them too.
You and me both. Third gens are still a little more affordable than your average fourth gen. Makes it easier to play with them. Thanks for checking the video out!
Here there! I just picked up an 88 GTA with 94K. I noticed that your car's oil pressure is reading just like mine, very high until it warms up. It stays pegged above the gauge and slowly works its way down one the car is warm. Is that normal? Any thing to worry about?
Dang, my Dad had a 87 Z28 that I learned to drive with and it didn't have any of those digital gauges... And that car was so loaded it even had gadgets running down the T-top headliner.
I grew up with 3rd gens. Def want to see some races. Not much footage from when I was coming up and these cars were new. Edit: I think the tpi TA is up on the 350 swap iroc but just guessing. Idk rear gears but you likely mentioned them in other vids.
The Iroc-Z has 3.23 gears, and the GTA has a 9-Bolt with 3.27's. I forget the channel that used to upload foxbody and f-body videos back in the day. If it comes back to me I'll reply again. Had great racing stuff from the 90's .

Sweet. I had a hunch it was the right audio for this video lol. I wish I could play the mainstream stuff but your audio can get muted, and you for sure cant monetize the videos. Doesnt make sense to use it, which is why nobody does for the most part.
Sorry I was late to the party, but as usual great video love the car and I recommend getting a air foil for the tuned port. If u don’t know about it. It lets the air come into the mouth of the tuned port to flow more smoothly. Summit has them for about 40-50 bucks last time I bought one😁
Btw the mesh is a old trick some of us used. It cuts down on the amount of leaves and grass and crap like that from going into the filter housing. As well as critters😂😂
I'm familiar with the airfoils. I'd consider buying a used one if I can find one on TGO or a FB group ad. Good info on the mesh I removed. I figured it was for critters lol. It did keep them out of the air box!

I’d look to see if it had a air foil. For over 10 years of looking I only found 2 in the salvage yard both off 87 gta 350’s that was crashed shortly after they was purchased with the low mileage on the odometers other then those 2 I bought from jegs and summit but anyways I could be wrong been a good while since messing .with 3rd gens. That air box should face the front but the center shaft or rod that the lid bolts 2. Is or has been turned and is off set or the air box isn’t for that side of the car. But most likely the rod and base has been moved well turned more then it should have anyways I always remembered my brother in laws 87 gta 350 he bought it new off the showroom floor in late jan 87, and it’s breather was always facing to front for the air coming through the underside of car from air dam it help push the cold air in the breather. But whatever either way works just fine. Other then those pesky leaves always finds a way in the air box lol. Thanks for the reply and have a awesome day!! i love the car man can’t wait to see what you do with it. i have a question that i can’t seem to figure out, i’ve got an 86 trans am with a 305 tpi it’s my first car and i got it on the road a couple months ago, i have this back and fourth vibration in the steering wheel right at about 40-50 mph and i can’t seem to find anything that’s wrong, steering box doesn’t have any play, tie rods seem fine, all the bushings look okay, wheels are balanced, just got an alignment but i still get this vibration. the car has eibach sportlines, kyb shocks, wonder bar, adjustable panhard bar, rear lca and lca relocation brackets.
Sorry I'm not answering your question, but is insurance expensive on third gens as a first car? Insurance seems cheap on these but I wouldn't know what it is for a ~16 year old
@@colbybrooks6324 if it darts after a bump it might just be shocks or springs. Not a professional but that was the problem recently on a car, replaced shocks and it's fine now. On your parents plan 250/mo is still a ton. Full coverage? Tickets?

Nice video, that car is in great shape! When you cleaned up the underside did you happen to loosen the bottom of the side ground effects and spray under there? When I got my GTA I did that to inspect the rockers and couldn't believe the dirt and sand that came out. You could even try spraying the drain holes that run alongside them and see if anything drains out. Also might want to hit those tiny headlight motor bolts with PB blaster etc., they are notorious to snap off (I broke one and had to drill it out) when taking them apart. I look forward to the next video.
I didnt remove the rocker moldings yet, no. I'll have to do that! Want to check behind the fenders as well. Seems like a common area to collect dirt and leaves etc. I did already rebuild the headlight motors. Luckily nothing broke. I tapped the nut driver real good when loosening them and they backed right out.
@@reddragon6613 power antenna doesnt work, smells like mouse in the cabin, needs valve stem seals, brakes are soft.... theres more but I'd rather leave the list short for now lol

After watching this video in full, i wanted to respond with some ideas. I dont have one of my own YET. But I think everyone should replace the stock engines, transmissions, rears, suspension, seats, tire width, sound system, speakers, and modernize these cars, so they perform EVEN BETTER THAN THE NEW CARS OF TODAY! AND LOOK SOOOO MUCH TOO! I understand for some people its all about the ORIGINAL CAR. : / BUT! For me, the driving experience is ALL ABOUT THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE. Ok so we have a car that was the star back in its day! BUT NOW WITH THE ADVANCES IN PERFORMANCE ( which covers everything i would and will be, replacing from the original stock car when i get it ) IT JUST MAKES SENSE TO USE THESE MODERN PARTS. AND THAT COMBINED WITH THE COOL THAT THIS CAR WAS MADE WITH JUST IN ITS DESIGN! : ) WILL MAKE THAT DRIVING EXPERIENCE SOOOO MUCH BETTER..... ( and who doesnt really want THAT? ) So consider everything i have said here, and ENJOY YOUR 87 TRANS AM!

So sad 87 GTA 350s and IROCs were auto... WTF was wrong with GM... Know there are conversion kits. Had loads of fun with my 84 Firebird V6 Manual at 17 years old. 40 now.

I found that interesting too. They had about 10 different induction systems alone on these cars. It makes them all a little different IMO.

I have no idea why they are routed different. The Camaro has more of an iconic induction system IMO.

@@mattcasaderitten9290 Firebirds have a lower hoodline. The Camaro TPI intake duct doesn't fit between the hood and core support.
Love these since they came out when I was 9 yrs old! Ive had a Thirdgen of some sort since 93.

the car also kinda darts on the road when you hit bumps and pulls to the right i’m going in for an alignment soon and hope that fixes it but idk

@@trashbandit2449 i’m 17 and i pay about 250 a month on my parents plan but once you turn 18 it should get a little better
TB 24, get the car title in your parents name. That will lower the insurance.

You can tell by looking at them that they are aftermarket C&C t-tops.

I dig the idea of a rear mount. Plus you get all of the turbo noises you might lose with a full exhaust.

You were probably better off taking that throttle body off & clean it. With it off you can clean the plenum as well.
Probably so. Ultimately an ultrasonic parts washer would be the best. Done have one and this method works pretty well for for shade tree mechanic.
This car had been painted because I've never seen paint on the hood adjustments, they're rubber shouldn't be no paint.

The ideal third gen is a 305tpi/5spd gta or iroc IMO
Bummer its automatic. My trans am is 350 vortec swapped and 5 speed manual and the engine is built for 400 hp.
Yes, I wish it was a 305/5speed car. They are more fun to me. The Iroc-Z is a 350/5speed (swapped engine).
I love my 86 Trans AM TPI, but this thing is a money pit and will continue to be one as long as I have to keep buying MAF sensors every 6 months......
There must be something else wrong if you toast a MAF sensor every few months! That's way too often. They should last years and years.
