    You have no idea what your videos make me feel like. I have severe cumulative depression and being alive is a struggle for me, yet those tours are like some magical spills that inject joy and happiness in my soul, so thank you for dedicating you time for this, thank you very very much.

    I really appreciate the timing of this video, it is useful for me to get a good look at Bismarck right now. Thank you! It looks so spacious, well kept, green and pedestrian-friendly, at least at this time of year :) Nice architecture, I miss that so much.

    Wow, this really brings the memories flowing back to me! I LOVED going to the Heritage Center as a kid. I totally forgot what it even looked like. The main thing I remember was a slot you could open that had a piece of real buffalo fur in it, it let you smell how stinky they were. lol Thanks for the video!

    Really enjoyed the walk. I have been to Bismarck probably two dozen times, but not for many years. I especially like the architecture of the capitol building. I don’t know much about architecture, but that style from the depression is my favorite. Hoover Dam is similar, as is the main post office in Minneapolis. I always think of it as “Federal Depression Gothic,” but it probably has a proper name. One thing I missed because I think you were too far west is the Bank of North Dakota. It’s the only state-owned bank in America, and I think it specializes in agricultural and student loans. Thanks!

    • @CityWalks
      @CityWalks  2 роки тому

      Oh, wow. I had no idea about that bank. I'm sorry to have missed it. I'd really like to give some time to the museum. I really like the architectural style as well. I looked it up and wikipedia says its Art Deco but I'm not sure about that. Thanks for watching and commenting with more info. -H

    Thanks for the video. I grew up there and lived there for about 25 years. Went to Bismarck High and later worked at the capital - it’s a beautiful building. Moved away to a warmer climate and other opportunities. I’ve been away for 35 years now and the single most important thing I learned was - there’s no place like home, the people and quality of life is priceless.

    Thanks for this walk as always. My favorite areas were the capital and the nearby museum. I think because of the cities name, I expected some Germanic influence, but did not really see any. Question for you to contemplate and maybe answer in an upcoming video: What is the best place, object, event, etc, that you discovered, that you would not have discovered if you weren't doing this channel? You can't say the dog you met in Bismarck.

    I have a question for you!
    Have you ever been to Dutton , Montana ?
    If not then please make a plan & visit there and make a city walk video especially north Countryside of Dutton I.E "Diamond Valley" area which is 11 mile north from main Dutton City ...
    If everything goes well please make a video of my request 🙂🙂🙂🙂

    It might be a good idea to familiarize yourself with an area before you give a tour of it. Wandering aimlessly around can be fun but you can easily miss the most interesting places if you don;t know where they are.

      HI William, I usually do a bit of that but I leave the proper guided tours with all the most famous sites to the dozens of other channels that can do a much better job. Thanks for the feedback. -H

      It was built in the Art Deco style- the interior has wonderful features and fixtures especially in the grand hall area in the legislative wing. Beautiful. I worked there for about 6 years.

    I normally give you a "thumbs up" and enjoy your walks. I just started going to the gym and walking with you (I last did Fargo), and enjoyed it, but one thing you said that was "unsettling" to me in this walk that made me give this one a "thumbs-down". You mentioned a white nationalist sticker that you saw (fortunately, you didn't show it.). Why?
    I want to visit state capitals and other cities, and take walking tours on my own, but could I end up like Ahmaud Arbery, who was murdered while "running while Black"? (You see, I'm African-American.) Could I have "a problem" in some of these cities and neighborhoods "walking while Black"? Your mention of the sticker started these thoughts in my head.
    Maybe it was a good thing you did, because you made me think, but in the long run, it probably wasn't a good thing (could be an unintentional "dog whistle"). But would you have mentioned a "Black Lives Matter" sticker? Better yet, why mention anything like that at all?
    And did you remove the sticker, or just leave it there?

    • @CityWalks
      @CityWalks  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Bruce. First, thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. I do appreciate viewers who provide this kind of feedback. It forces me to think on a deeper level. The mention of that sticker was a conscious choice. I'd seen another one in Coer D'Alene a week before and suspected it was a white nationalist org but had to look it up. In the end, I want this channel to be more than just bubblegum for the eyes and to have some sort of positive impact on society, even if it's minute. That said, in the end it's a walking channel. I think it's important for people, especially white people like me, in this country to realize that these groups are out there and active and especially after the previous regime. I didn't mention the name of the group because I didn't want to promote them but I do think its something we need to face up to. I was surprised to see the sticker in these cities, though not really. I didn't take the sticker down because at the time, I hadn't thought that part through. Perhaps I should carry a sharpy with me and cross it out or right "racists" on it. It would require me to stop filming for a bit and I might get in some trouble for graffiti or something but that's probably a small thing to do. What would you recommend?
      In past walks, I have gone out of my way to show Black Lives Murals and signs, etc. As a white person who still has a lot to learn, I hesitate to do too much more as well as for reasons above. In my personal life I am certainly a supporter of the BLM movement and trying to be an ally but, again, I've got a lot to learn. I'll continue to work on that and highlight social justice issues when I can.
      Finally, I'm sorry that my mention of this made you uncomfortable. I know I can never walk in your shoes and never fully understand the challenges that people of color and really anyone who is not of the white majority live their entire lives facing in this country. I"m not sure how to proceed exactly on this sort of thing. I've certainly gotten some pushback from people telling me to stop being a Social Justice Warrior but I pretty much ignore them. What would you suggest? I'd welcome your thoughts if you are willing.
      And again, thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts. -H
