  • Oakland, CA sculptor Jeremy Mayer makes assemblages of human figures from an unlikely source: typewriters. Typewriters, once a vital tool in the office and at home worldwide, are now destined either to sit on the collector's shelf or doomed to be recycled, or worse. Jeremy disassembles them completely and then reassembles them into the forms by which, he says, the inventors of the typewriter were inspired- our own bodies.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I learned to type on a manual when I was 17. My mother told me "You'll always have a job if you can type." In the late thirties, working in a landscape architect office drafting, my friend Irene told me "Never tell them you can type; you'll be stuck as a secretary." Now I keyboard. I type at 75-80 words per minute. I practice typing - reaching for the keys- in my imagination while waiting in line at the grocery store, or while driving, instead of peering into my phone. These machines are a deep part of my life, and I honor them. Jeremy honors them, also. Thank you.

To understand art as complex as his in 14 minutes is impossible, but what a fascinating briefing on how and why he does it. Amazing.

I so relate to the passion for disassembly. And degreasing.

I only use broken, junky typewriters as sculpture fodder / materials, for my studio work. I share the screws , springs, and bolts with the typo-sphere to honor to the typewriters you presented and to help those who love them too. I just can't do the act of gutting a machine that works. But you make them beautiful as something else. I try.

Just to be clear, and not meant to criticize, but this is not really 'ASSEMBLAGE'... it is deconstruction. He has Deconstructed and Reconstructed the parts of one object into a figurative piece. He has not assembled different objects together into a piece of art, whereas dissimilar objects more or less maintain an understood intrinsic function, even when collaged together. Here he has taken parts of a whole and re-changed it into differing whole.
By the way I don't buy the notion he hates the history of the typewriter. It seems rather an excuse to give extra meaning to his process... I mean you would say a hammer has been an oppressive tool for centuries to men? (Therefore you dispise hammers?) Well no of course not, it's a tool, to the betterment of those that use it, whether men or women.

I agree that his work isn't assemblage. I think he embellished his artistic development in an attempt to make an interesting presentation. He even contradicted himself about his hatred for the history of the typewriter and then talked about how important it was to remember the typewriter in the evolution of technology. In all honesty, I would have to ask myself how would I present my own assemblage work in such a presentation. I'm not sure I could make it as interesting.

Repurposing? Ooh tall order and frightening concept for me right now. How to apply it to my work I wonder...
