    I’ve been watching your videos for 5+ years and still enjoy every single one. You also give me the confidence to repair a number of machines, to the point I have been asked by several machine owners to work on theirs. The negative comments only let themselves down…. Your 1000+ videos, where you don’t bag anyone for doing their best and with thousands of regular followers says it all. We love your content and hope it continues for years to come - my week wouldn’t be the same without them.

    Trying to remember when I first played with 555 timers on breadboards to make sounds as a kid, it was probably around the same time those pinball machines were made. Back when breadboarding was done with soldering and not the push in stuff we do now. I'm guessing that sound board isn't that different than a bunch of timers, funny that what ever capacitors were making it go all horror show did come back to normal after a few charge/discharge cycles. Yes, I was using a soldering iron back as far as I can remember, first semi-dangerous tool I was allowed to use.

    I bought one of the Japanese solder suckers after you recommended it. It is without doubt the best solder suckerer I have ever owned and now I also highly recommended it to everyone else. Thank you, Ron, for making my life easier. For those who think it's not good enough, maybe you should let someone else who knows what their doing do your desoldering if you're not willing to learn 😂

    Just a trick I came up with.
    I bought a couple of those silicon placemats at Ikea and I glued them to my tabletop where I work. Nothing slips anymore, very non-conductive and heat resistant. If it gets too dirty I just rip it off and replace it with a new one.
    I also built a little "soldering table" for the worktop that moves the thing I am working on a couple more inches closer to my eyes. That way I am not hunched over for hours. At my age everything helps :-)

  • @EsotericArctos

    The effort to repair the original MPU is worth while. A good soak in Vinegar can sometimes get rid of a lot of the corrosion, as the vinegar counteracts the alkaline, and then a good wash off can help you see the damage, which is usually no where near as bad as it looks. I usually do the vinegar soak before cleaning up the board, as it gets rid of a lot of the corrosion and residue before the sanding/cleaning of the board. That's just my way of doing it :).

    I build custom racing quadcopters, and some of these flight controllers are 20mm mounting holes on the boards and have up to 80 solder joints. Many use 30 awg wires that are so tiny that I use a magnifier and a loop to solder them.

    It sure sounded like it but man if this machine had a squawk n talk bug out like that then fix itself and say I have come to suck your blood in Dracula's voice then it would be dead set terrifying as well as suit this games horror theme to a T while it haunts ya store then when ya turn up in the morning to install the new displays and the 2nd machine switches itself on for a few seconds without being plugged in and says= WoooooOhhhhWooohh I'm Broke😮

    Great job on that MPU! I love bringing things back to life that would otherwise be destined for the landfill. I don't know if I'd call all of those people "haters". Some just like to argue about whether you're "doing it right" according to their own preferences. Some of us geeks just do that to each other. You should see the things that go on some of the other boards, like Hi Fi and antique radios. Just the "recap all" vs "only replace what's bad" debate can consume several pages of a topic alone! (Don't get me started on selenium rectifiers vs silicon diodes!) Sometimes I post to a turntable forum about a lower end turntable that I'm messing with to play less than pristine records, and I get "I won't let any of my records near that. If the record is not perfect, it's not even worth listening to!" Geeks got to argue, so I guess that makes you a member of the club like the rest of us! I bet if you leave one of those "hater" posts up, say, about what type of solder you should be using, you'll see people arguing with the person who posted, because they can't all agree on that! I bet someone told you that you should be using Eutectic solder only, which is what the audiophiles use, and they pay a lot for it. Others will tell you what you already know: If plain old 60/40 was good enough for the original machine, it's good enough for the repair! (Don't worry about it, people! It'll be all right!) I enjoy how you preemptively argue with the things you know someone's getting ready to argue about. Keep 'em coming! I'm falling about 3 weeks behind on my UA-cam videos, so I have to skip some I've subscribed to, but I never skip yours!

    Most guys I know here in Holland that , like me, restore 80's slot machine PCB's also use vinegar to neutralize the acid first. Mostly they even go into a ultrasonic cleaner, rinse it with demineralized water afterwards. Except for this board the switches might not like it. Personally I also also replace the sockets. There also exists (we order it in China) solder mask in different colors that you apply like nail polish, with a fine brush that can be UV hardened.

    @36:23 -- "A little jumper here!"
    I thought thought this was DRACULA'S, NOT FRANKENSTEIN'S MPU Board, Ron!
    The insides of this "Dracula" pinball machine are looking more and more like Frankenstein's Monster! Bela Lugosi and Christopher might be frowning now!
    (Yes, the correct term for Him is "The Monster" or "Frankenstein's Monster," NOT Frankenstein. Frankenstein was The Creator/Mad Scientist!)
    PS -- Not to worry... A lot of us are miserly/penny-pinchers, too.
    I've upgraded and customized a LOT of joystick cases with higher-quality arcade parts imported from somewhere-else. (I'm not a fan of Happ/iL parts.) You have to make plastic cuts and install things to control/route wiring but you save as much of the original hardware, too! Microswitches and buttons CAN be saved and repurposed.
    I don't know WHY people throw away all the guts. Those parts can cost $2, $5 and more! This adds up quickly and most of the screws are metric, little itty-bitty parts that are hard to find States-side!
    If something still works and can be reused, KEEP IT!!!! Zip-loc it so it doesn't get lost!!!!
