  • There are many iconic F1 cars from down the years but not many can match the quirkiness of the Tyrrell P34, the only car to have raced and won in F1 with more than four wheels! Mike takes us through what makes this six-wheeled F1 car so special and how it works.

I was fortunate enough to buy a P34 several years back. It's one of my all time favorite cars, along with the Paxton turbine Indy 500 racer and the Cord L29. Every time I look at it, I can't help but smile that I managed to get one.
It may be a Hot Wheels but it's a Tyrrell and it's all mine.

To this day I vividly remember Jody and this car at Watkins Glen. I was 16, sitting in the bleachers by "the bog" in perfect Autumn weather watching as the cars would appear over the crest of the hill from the bottom of the boot and brake for the corner that takes them back up to the current NASCAR track. Everybody did it more or less the same. All of a sudden here comes Jody over the crest and he's already pitching it sideways 150-200 yards before the corner. I mean REALLY sideways, like a dirt modified at Flemington. When he passed directly in front of us, all I could see was gearbox. By the third lap of this, you could hear people down the course yelling "Here he comes!" (Can you imagine? We could hear them over the noise of F1) And there was no doubt who "he" was.

On later models of the 6 wheel Tyrrell there were perspex windows in the side of the car which was actually great to watch because you could see the drivers' legs moving as they pushed the pedals. At the time I remember someone from Tyrrell saying that they did it because one of the drivers came into the pits during testing, complaining that the front of the car was a bit "loose". It turned out that one of the 4 front wheels had dropped off, so they put the windows in so the driver could check that all the wheels were there.

It actually makes sense that this car would be more stable while sliding/drifting than standard 4 wheel cars, since it has 4 wheels up front providing more of a contact patch to help push the car in the desired direction.. I wonder how well a set up like this would work with an actual drift car lol

    • @DjDolHaus86
      @DjDolHaus86 4 роки тому +3

The thing is that you don't really get more of a contact patch, the contact patch is defined by the pressure of the air in the tyre and the amount of weight that tyre is supporting. You could get more contact patch by simply lowering tyre pressure on a single tyre rather than using a pair. Not to mention the added complication and the fact that drift cars need as much steering angle as possible which would be adversely affected by multiple wheels.
The Tyrell was simply a way to skirt the rules surrounding tyre size and it didn't really work at all.

I've read the team found regular size front tires messed up the airflow to the rear wing. Reducing their diameter and tucking them behind the front wing solved this. But the smaller tires didn't have a big enough contact patch so they doubled them up, hence the six wheel design.

    • @vinno97

Cross ply tyres ballooned with the centrifugal forces at high speed, and caused the front of the car to lift. Small front wheel combatted that, but had to be doubled up to maintain contact patch. The design was indeed about aerodynamics, but not frontal area as many people blindly claim.

As I understand it, more rubber on the road does not exactly mean more grip. It does give a higher chance of grip in adverse conditions (in this case also giving a greater chance that a wheel is in contact with the road when it gets bumpy) and increases the amount of stress a tire can take before failing. However my journey to understand friction is ongoing.

Tyrrell raced 4 front wheel again in 1996. OK, not 6 wheels in total but 4 front wheels. One on each corner. For the German GP, they replaced the rear wheels with the front wheels. Remember, back then, the Hockenheim Ring wasn't neutered. So Tyrrell figured that running the front wheels at the back would be an aerodynamic advantage at Hockenheim with its long straights. I recall Tyrrell had to modify the floor at the back to accommodate the skinnier wheels. And remember, Tyrrell also had the solid upper suspension wishbone on their 1996 car.
But Tyrrell only ran the 4 front wheel set up during practice. Don't remember why they reverted back to the conventional set up for the race. Maybe they didn't find an advantage? Or the FIA said no? 🤷‍♂️

The Tyrrell was certainly one of the most outlandish F1 cars ever but the Wolf WR* in Jody’s collection has to be, for my money, the most beautiful F1 car ever made

Frontal area wasn’t the driving factor behind Derek Gardner’s design, it was actually something he skimmed over which is the lift of the tyres. This was before radial tyres had be introduced into f1, and normal crossply tyres would change shape and grow in diameter because of the centrifugal forces at high speed, i.e creating lift. Now obviously a smaller tyre means less lift, which means more consistent ride heights and a more stable aero platform. Part of the reason the car never met it’s full potential was Goodyear never put serious development into the small 10” tyres, meaning they were never to the standard of the regular sized tyres.

    very much agree!
I'm really annoyed by the fact that for the 2021 regulations they even had/have task-groups to challenge the regulations to see if anyone could find loop-holes.
Looser regulations even give smaller teams a chance, because anyone can have a great idea regardless of how much money they have. But with strict regulations it's just about solving an optimization problem with tight boundaries which is simply done by throwing more time (=money) at it.

They should allow this sort of innovation again, I don't think the 4 rear wheels were the best, but the 4 in the front would be great to see again.

I remember buying one of my first RC cars, and I opted to get this car. It was awesome and turned heads as I’m sure the actual car did..... I should have held on to it, just for the looks. Sadly I tossed it after the steaming servo locked up and the wheels would only stay at a turning position. (This was before my TAMIYA/FUTABA Years)

When I was young boy in the 80ies me and my brothers got RC car version of P34 as Christmas present (it was shared by the three of us).
The plastic frame was pretty accurate copy with plenty of details and the model was quite big (~30cm long) and I still remember how cool this design was with the four front wheels turning together. But I never saw P34 racing in the F1 because Finnish TV didn't show F1 racing back then.
It was really nice to see the real P34 up close and to hear the story behind it. Big thanks to Drivetribe team for making this video!

Open wheel racing has changed so dramatically... wasn't long ago when attrition ruled the day, both in IndyCar and F1.
Accompanying the attrition... there was dominant wins whereby one particular driver/car was essentially un-touchable at a given time.

The designer has done an excellent job explaining it, but his explanation doesn't get used. The frontal area is determined by the outline of the car when viewed from the front. The front tires fit inside the outline of the rear tires, whether full sized or this size, therefore here was no reduction in frontal area. The concept was based on exposed front tires cause lift, which is countered by the front wing to hold it down, but the wing adds drag. By using smaller fronts behind a more aerodynamic nose, drag (not frontal area) was reduced, resulting in greater top speed at the end of the straights where most overtaking was happening. Tyrrell drivers did finish 3rd and 4th in the WDC, behind only Lauda and Hunt in a season that often had 28 cars starting each race, and more failing to qualify. It wasn't a failure, just not as good as two other cars.

I always loved the look and concept with this car, its a shame the technology couldn't be perfected. I wonder if they used something like aviation multi disc brakes which are specifically designed for the smaller diameter tires on business jets and more modern technology with the suspension system to keep the front tires in contact with the ground, would it work today.
