My mother once played Columns an entire day in '93... that is until my dad told her, "The score counter won't go any higher, you know." This music takes me back to being five years old and watching in utter awe as those gems moved furiously...
my dad did that too! I remember coming home after school and he was playing it at level 9999. the console is at max speed then and just running infinitely. The game only ended because he decided to switch it off :P
I remember that this was the only game that my father loved to play with me when I was a child, we spent hours on advanced levels, I always beat him, he was impressed with the speed of my pieces... one of the few things that I was better than my father in my entire life
That would be Tokuhiko Uwabo. Compared to the Game Boy version of Tetris' type A background music, which had an appropriately Russian feel, "Clotho" took a more classical approach to its musical style.
Fun epic fact: the final part of the song in the video, which is also the song playing when you are about to game over, is inspired/plagiarized from Iron Maiden’s Phantom of the opera
shiiiitt exactly the same ! i was looking since y was a kid for the names and for super hang on o good times playing with my father at golden axe o shit im buying a genesis i still have the cartdrige
That sounds amazing. Mine was different though. I think it was Columns, Sonic 1, Revenge of Shinobi, European superstars (soccer), Super Monaco Grand Prix, and Streets of Rage.
Black Market I think, they (SEGA) made different packs of games for every region, I'm from Europe and have the PAL region, so they would thought that in europe would like these games, if you are from USA or the NTSC region//JAP region the games might be different
This song reminds me of when my mom was still here. Jesus Christ, I haven't cried so hard in years as I did when I decided to buy the Mega Drive Collection and just ran through all the games, hit this one, thought nothing of it, then heard the song, and everything crushed me at once. This song hurts so good.
My grandmother was so addicted to this game that the only reason I kept my Sega Genesis until 2012 (when she died) was so she could play Columns at 2 in the fucking morning while I was asleep!
Actually, Clotho was a goddess in Greek mythology, along with her two sisters who also have tracks named after them in this game. The three of them together were responsible for weaving fate, destiny, life, and death.
As addictive as Tetris is and how cool the music is, Columns buried it. The game was better and its nostalgia factor is even greater. Even my mum loves it lol Timeless.
My childhood best friend's mom would take the Genesis into her bedroom and play this game for hours. No joke. We had to beg for it back to play Golden Axe II lol
the ultimate theme song. It so in-depth for such a simple puzzle game. Very rpg-esque. I can hear the sound of 8bit columns breaking right now. Level up lol
Loved the fact that when you paused the game it doesnt clear the screen. So as soon as your gem dropped, you pause and plan ahead on where to put it. You could play forever!
I just remembered this song last night i remember having a 6in1 cart with this game in it. Im suprised alot of folks still remember this game its pretty good.
In my country we had something similar, but with 7 games instead: Tiny Toons Adventures, World Cup '92, Streets of Rage, Ms Pacman, Columns, Tetris and Bomboy Explosion Kid.
I’m 21 now and I remember being like 6 and playing this game nonstop on Sega with my older boy cousins on Sunday mornings. They’re like 27 now and we no longer talk so this song has sentimental value. I love it because it makes me feel nostalgic :)
So good, that fast part is my favorite, reminds me a bit of the mid section in Iron Maidens, Phantom Of The Opera, which begins at 3:26, I believe. Great stuff and fun game!
Aaaah! I always thought I was the only one who noticed that - that's amazing :) It was amazing how the music changed depending on how critical your situation was
The slow, methodical opening evokes opulent architecture and spacious halls, reminiscent of the more "holy" sounding tunes in Actraiser and Soul Blazer. At 1:28 it picks up a bit of speed and sets out on a rolling, meandering path that reminds me of Phillip Glass. Unfortunately I never played this game when it was new, but at least I get to enjoy this incredible song now!
I've love this game since the early 90's. It's an must have for any puzzle-loving fan. I remember playing not only this but Tetris and Dr. Mario...all 3 games are awesome in their own special way.
You know, I may not have been very young when I played this game, I don't have as deeply engraved nostalgia as some of you would have but I still gotta say it's one hell of a song. It really captures the feel of this game. Stoic, ancient, yet busy and even nerve-racking in a way. The song embodies this through simplicity and great composition and no I'm not a musician, just a game designer.
This is probably the earliest memory of a song from a video game that I have. I was 7 when this game came out and my brother bought it. I still catch myself humming the song once in awhile.
After 23 years, this song stills scaring the shit out of me... I'm crying right now... My mom used to play Columns when i was 2 and because of this song, she was forced to play with headphones or mute, anytime i heared the song, i started crying loud...
My Grandmother was our house holds resident expert at columns. 60 years old and she reached Level 210. I didnt know that it went that high when I was a kid.
I remember when I was a kid, playing the game and my dad came into the room just to listen to the tunes while I played. He said he liked the baroque style of the game's songs and was fascinated by its great music.
I remember that this was the only game that my father loved to play with me when I was a child, we spent hours on advanced levels, I always beat him, he was impressed with the speed of my pieces... one of the few things that I was better than my father in my entire life
This song is a really nice background music for when you're playing Novice flash columns on level 5, have yourself worked all the way up to the top, but through a series of freak accident combos you work your way back down to the bottom and smash that shiny little gem. Like I always say, every missed combo is just a bigger combo waiting to happen.
Wow, this song sure takes me back. The glory days of my early childhood were all the hours spent playing my Genesis, which included this game. I remember I could never get past level 6, but I didn't really care because I had fun with it. Such good times
I remember as a kid (and even to this day) when I play columns, i get lost while playing this song while the columns keep coming down faster and I always forget where I am
Love this game family game night was the best all sat in the icing room with dad home from the navy all trying to beat my mums high-scores. Thanks for posting this it has made me happy
Good old times, remember playing this in early 2000's, such a memorable times. the world for me in that time just more epic, compared nowadays, no smartphones or whatsoever.
i swear this song takes me back! i remember summers in my childhood playing this game continously. i used to know this song completely, but this is the first time i've heard in 7 or 8 years. good times!
My god, I used to play the FUCK out of this game. It was addictive. The music just added to it. I genuinely obsessed over it. I would sit in school all day and count down the minutes until I could gtfo there and go play columns. The PS1 came and that was the end of my columns obsession... crazy.
my parents played this game a lot back in the day. unaware it never ends. not that didn't mind the game or its wonderful soundtrack, it did cut into my sonic time on the megadrive!
the soundtrack to this game was from another planet, it just seemed to have clarity, mystique, hypnotic vibe to it to it that defied the system specs. The fact that is was one of the first games too is even more impressive.
this game is badass i used to play it wit my mom when i was younger.... just but the game for my PSP and 360.... nothin like the old skoo games...especially this song
My mother once played Columns an entire day in '93... that is until my dad told her, "The score counter won't go any higher, you know."
This music takes me back to being five years old and watching in utter awe as those gems moved furiously...
Thanks for sharing your history!
My mother was into this game heavily aswell, and the music is so nostalgic and brings me back to the good times.
My parents would play this this series for hours as a kid, I was more into mean bean machine myself
my dad did that too!
I remember coming home after school and he was playing it at level 9999. the console is at max speed then and just running infinitely. The game only ended because he decided to switch it off :P
I remember that this was the only game that my father loved to play with me when I was a child, we spent hours on advanced levels, I always beat him, he was impressed with the speed of my pieces... one of the few things that I was better than my father in my entire life
Whoever made the soundtrack to this game deserves some serious recognition.
That would be Tokuhiko Uwabo. Compared to the Game Boy version of Tetris' type A background music, which had an appropriately Russian feel, "Clotho" took a more classical approach to its musical style.

I may not have liked the game but the music is really good. I'll listen to it while playing other puzzle games with the music off.
Super Hang On, The Revenge Of Shinobi, Golden Axe, World Cup Italia,Collumns and Streets Of Rage EPIC CARTDRIGE
Yeah, the Sega 6-Pak is pretty damned awesome.

It's even stranger now because I'm from Spain hahaha. I suppose mine came out later. I reckon the packs change then and again.
God, i remember being like 5 years old and just sitting at the menu screen just listening to this song.
Same, but i was like 2 or 3, which probably makes this song my earliest memory.
me too!

Same. My dad would steal the sega from me and play this game and i used to sit there and listen to it constantly, i was 5 to hahahaha

Beautiful comment man. I’m sorry for your loss. It’s unbelievable what one piece of music can do to your soul. Stay strong bud 💪
@@reniisgod indeed a beautiful comment. I remember, when I was a child, I used to play this game with my mom as well... ahhhh the good old times...
My penis died. Like pls?
I also play this game with my mom..
Same with me and my uncle. I'm glad that you have those memories :)

me in another life tried to perform this on an organ...... on a daw._. but didn't worked.
Really!!
I’ve had this melody in my head all month and haven’t played this in nearly 25 years. The music is very memorable for this game.
This song makes my heart flutter so

Sorry for your loss man, have a blessed year 😊 (John 3:16)
When I hear this song I can imagine a really old and abandoned church cause of its mystical feeling
i never thought it but now i cant stop thinking it
Actually, Clotho was a goddess in Greek mythology, along with her two sisters who also have tracks named after them in this game. The three of them together were responsible for weaving fate, destiny, life, and death.
Oh the three granny in the Hercules Disney movie.
now that mentioned that ... this music would be nice in a church organ I suppose.
I can actually see that happening.
I miss this game. Hearing the music when I was little creeped me out, but I love it.
This can be played perfectly on a church organ.
it seems exceedingly difficult.
I'd pay to see that. Imagine being in a huge cathedral and having a talented organist absolutely rip it up to this. My god it would be epic.
@@DarrenBates Fuckin' A!
Or the popular Hammond B3 electric organ.
Sounds killer on guitar as well
This music used to hypnotise me back in the early 90s when I was a kid. One of the greatest video game soundtracks of all time.
Honestly; the best puzzle game music, to this day

So much nostalgia! I remember watching my mom and aunt play this as I waited to play Sonic.
Aw man, it's one of those days. Raining out and I'm in bored. Thought I get a taste of nostalgia.

Rain is just Earth using a speed hack in Columns.

When I hear this song I imagine a palace in Persia late at night cleaning due to the gems shining ontop of it reflecting the moonlight
I think of a palace too. Not sure where, but I do.

sounds like the perfect music for playing chess, backgamon or even mahjong, fits perfectly with any classical board game
